This is a nice little restaurant on the way in the center of Pleasanton downtown and serves near authentic Indian food. Service is excellent with a full bar and the staff is really caring and courteous while serving you the food as well as checking in on you which is very refreshing as not all, Indian restaurants can really be called a full-service restaurant in the bay area. Menu was slightly overpriced but food quality is good. The ambience is bright and thankfully there no Indian music playing in the background so you can really chat your heart out. Was quite busy for early Sunday evening and seems to be gathering a mix of crowd. we ordered mostly vegetarian starters and entrées and turned out to be really great taste. read more

The portions are very good for the prices, the rice is enough for 3 people to share (you have to order it as a side). Another Indian buffet in the tri-valley to mark off the list. Now, this place is sort a of has that hole in the wall type of feel, but the food itself is very good. During this time we were the first ones in and the place is nice and clean inside and out host was nice and courteous. The food itself was like many other Indian buffers around in terms what was served that day. So at this time, nothing out of the ordinary so to speak and the food itself was very good overall and not too salty from what I tasted or ate. I did enjoy the fact that they flavored their water which not the usual norm at most Indian places. All in all, it's a nice elegant place to eat and I plan on eating here more often if given time lol. Worst Valentine Day Dinner of my life. Went there with friends, settled around 7.45PM, no menu till 8.15PM. Finally got only the food menu (no drinks menu), ordered starters took its own sweet time to come to the table. Missed one of the starter (was added to the bill), pretty sure was served at a different table. Kept calling the waiter no response, finally asked for drinks menu and ordered main course and drinks together. Main course was served with random dishes coming to the table. I have been to the restaurant before infact i had a house warming party with almost 70 guest and Frontier hosted it at my place. That was then and this is now. Been visiting Frontier Spice on and off for a few years, this review is specific to a post Covid review from a couple of weeks ago. Outside seating is pretty good - 3 tables for a party of 4 and 3 tables for a party of 2. This is on Main Street and is probably one of the best outside seating spaces for Indian restaurants. Gobi Manchurian and the Tandoori Paneer were good - not overly spicy, and flavorful in their own way. Palak Paneer was really good - not too much oil or masala and a good earthy taste without being bland. The Aloo was probably the weakest link - perfectly steamed but lacking in spice and salt. Biryani was not too bad - flavorful but I prefer the more Andhra varieties where it's grainy and not too much like Pulav in consistency. The breads were great - the naan was light and not burnt. Paratha was also good - not chewy and perfectly cooked. Will definitely go back. Food is flavorful and not spicy, save for the Aloo. read more

Hariyali kofta and malai paneer were both enjoyable items, but definitely should be requested to be spicier. They were a little on the sweeter side. The chicken tikka masala was the worst item of the bunch. The chicken itself was very rubbery, chewy, and hard to tear. Also, this item is not like the typical chicken tikka masala, as the gravy is on the drier side with mostly onions and spices. I went to Frontier Spice for the first time! I ordered online for pickup. After ordering, I immediately called the restaurant to inquire as to the time it would be ready. I was told 30 mins. I decided to jump in the car and show up early m, just in case. Upon arrival, my order had been ready and waiting. I told them "I'm glad I arrived early as I was told 30 mins!" No response. I ordered the lamb Curry, a basmati rice with vegetables, 4 samosas, and deep fried cauliflower in a sauce. The rice was amazing and plenty. The lamb curry was really good but the serving was for one person. The deep fried cauliflower was drenched in sauce and unappealing. I was so hoping for a better portion size and less for the rice. Frontier Spice is a solid addition to the dining choices in downtown Pleasanton. No lunch buffet, they instead offer lunch specials which cost around $10 and come with daal, raita, rice, salad, and choice of plain or garlic naan. There aren't too many tables, but it wasn't crowded when I went for lunch this afternoon with a couple of work colleagues. The decor is bright and cheery, with plenty of natural light from large windows overlooking Main Street. There is a bar area with seating, so it's probably also a good option for dinner and drinks. Parking is plentiful on the street as well in a private lot to the rear of the restaurant. We ordered three lunch specials and shared our entrées family style. My colleagues ordered the lamb curry and chicken chilli, I vacillated between two vegetarian options before letting the waiter steer me towards the paneer jalfrezi. The paneer jalfrezi was excellent - rich flavors, subtle spices, diced vegetables cooked just right, paneer slivers succulent to the bite. Definitely a winner. The chicken chilli was another winner. Prepared in the Indian-Chinese style, with a nice kick to it and the chicken breaded to perfection. Next time I am craving Indian-Chinese food, I'm heading to Frontier Spice and ordering this entrée instead of driving down to Silicon Valley to get my fix. The lamb curry was alright. The lamb was nicely cooked - not under or overdone, but the curry did not blow me away. In retrospect, it may have suffered in comparison with the previous two dishes. The daal, raita, rice, salad and naan that accompanied each lunch special were okay - they each adequately served their purpose, which was to round out the meal and provide bang for buck. All in all, Frontier Spice is a solid four star lunchtime option in downtown Pleasanton. I'm looking forward to visiting again soon and trying some of the other entrées. read more

First time trying this restaurant on a recommendation...we drove all the way here from San Jose and it was totally worth it! Everything we tried was amazing and so flavorful! Service was impeccable as well. The garlic naan and the butter chicken were my favorite out of the 6 dishes we tried...but all were delicious (just wanted to be clear!). We really wanted Indian and picked this place because they had 9 Health & Safety measures listed on yelp. We got take-out from here and it was good. Kastoori Malai Kabab- it was so tender and flavorful, my daughter loved it! Paneer Tikka Masala- this had a bit sweet taste to it and I was expecting the gravy to be a little smoother, however it was still good. We love their butter chicken, lamb rogan josh, gobi manchurian, daal tadka and palak paneer. Their mixed meat appetizer is the bomb! Its a combination of chicken marinated with 3 types of spices. We have frequently visited them and also catered during our kids' birthday parties and they have never failed to wow us. Their owner "Sonu" is a super nice person and my husband never fails to compliment him on their menu. During catering Sonu was gracious enough to offer us discounted rate, with huge proportions of food. During the COVID-19, we did take out with them and the food was still so delicious. Wish I could give negative stars for this place. We literally got up from this place without being served due to rude behavior of the manager. When we walked in, we were made to sit at an uncomfortable spot (even though entire restaurant was empty). After being seated upon request in a better spot, several minutes passed and nobody showed up to even collect the order. We walked out, with the manager not even bothered to check what was wrong. It just seems these guys are not serious in the way they conduct their business, neither do they understand hospitality. We were walking downtown Pleasanton and came across this restaurant, read the yelp review and it was 4 stars so we decided to try it out. The waiter was nice but told us to order our food quickly. We ordered taj, 2 garlic naan and butter chicken. Food came very quickly. I took a first bite and got a piece of chicken that tasted like it was old and had bad taste. They used thigh meat which looked like it had pieces of drumstick meat or it was just old chicken meat . My husband doesn't like to complain so we just had gravy and naan. Most likely that butter chicken was old and warmed up and served to us. Also I'm a Indian so they assumed that I don't drink and he only brought one glass for my husband instead of two to serve the beer. This is so far the worst Indian food I ate . My husband had diarrhea twice . Total waste of $60. I always check yelp reviews before trying new places but this time l was disappointed. read more
