Frontier Pack Train was great. The horses look well taken care of and the staff are very friendly. We took the 1 hour horseback guided tour, and it was the perfect amount of time. Horses are very well trained and our guide was very friendly. I was nervous once I got up on the horse, my guide realized that and placed me in line right behind her. That made me feel much more confortable. She didn't say anything about it, she just intuitively did it, showing her experience with us City folk. Lol What she told us about the land and some plants while we rode, was very interesting. Well paced tour and I would recommend taking the earlier time tours. Our guide Emily was the worst guideI have ever experienced never spoke to us. Never gave us information on the landscape and landmarks. She seemed to have a problem controlling her horse and towing her mule. I felt bad for the horses as she did not water them during our rest to Parker Lake. We were a small group and experienced with trail rides so we had a great time in spite of her. I had to call the office to request that she send the photos she grudgingly had taken to my phone. She never asked for my number. We tipped only because they might pool the tips with other guides everyone else was friendly and very helpful The ride to Parker Lake was beautiful and we really enjoyed it. 1 hour ride- Jessica was great and very informative. The moment we arrived we were greeted by 3 cowgirls, they made it their mission to protect and entertain us. They did just that! There priority was safety, so my wife and daughter, my sister in law and two nieces strapped on helmets and mounted our majestic and charismatic horses. I never write these things. OK, you've heard that one before but honestly, I'm not that social. ; ) But. And yet. This was too good not to. It's real -- authentic, as the kids say -- and it's hard and sometimes it's real hard. Yet here were nine-year-olds doing it. The food is good, views astounding, countryside endless, and we were all taller than is wise atop these magnificent animals, and walked a bit taller when back on-ground afterward. Staff was young and boundless (ah, those were the days), conversation plentiful, equines awesome, and the world cooperated as well by being gorgeous beyond belief. Frontier Pack Train provides an awesome horseback experience. My family and I had such a memorable experience last summer of 2013 that we had to come back for another horseback ride this summer while vacationing nearby in Mammoth Lakes. They are located near June Lake and very close to Silver Lake. They have over 100 horses and mules in their stable. They are all well trained, and I could tell they are loved and taken care of by their owners. They have three different Horseback tours. Full-day, half-day, and 1 hour. Affordable rates. We did the 1 hour, and the entire tour route was very scenic. Tour guides were all friendly and knowledgeable about their horses and the surrounding area. Make sure to bring a camera and tip your guides! My family and I have always enjoyed horseback riding, and we do it whenever we get the chance during our vacations. We've done horseback riding in Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Pismo Beach, and even in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Mammoth Lakes is my favorite because of the tour itself. We'll be coming back here whenever we're in Mammoth Lakes. read more

My dad and I have been going on the Frontier Pack Train Horse Drive for 25 years. It's started as a father daughter trip, and has become an adventure we've enjoyed with extended friends and family every year since! 4 days of camping, 100 miles of riding, and being a true cowboy/ cowgirl herding 100 horses and mules! We camp out under the stars, and swim in the hot springs. It's an experience you won't get anywhere else. I highly recommend it. My experience with Frontier Pack Train was back in 2017 so any critique that follows may have been resolved by now. Here are experiences from my trip. 1. The horse that I was assigned was too tall for my frame which made mounting it very difficult without assistance. 2. During the ascent to our camp, one of the mules tripped in the creek and consequently soaked my belongings and that of others. We were not notified by staff upon arriving at camp that our personal belongings had been on that mule and were handed completely soaked duffle bags. No apology was made. 3. On the descent back to camp, two expensive fly rods were lost due to not being fastened securely to the mule. 4. Staff was only marginally friendly however the cook was very personable. I don't mean to discourage you from using Frontier Pack Train as to get to the portion of the Sierra they serve, you don't have any other horse pack options. If any of the staff acts in an intimidating way, remember that you are the customer and don't hesitate to speak up if any issues arise. Lastly, it was a beautiful and fun trip aside from the above issues. read more

Incredible time today. One little girl in our group got spooked when her horse stumbled a little before we left the stable area. Wish I knew her name but one of the staff jumped in took the little ones reins and talked/calmed down the little one. We weren't 50 yards from the stable and the little one forgot she had been spooked. And the staff member going to school in Ohio, thanks for you patience with the boy in our group that never and I mean never stopped asking questions. I'm sure the rest of the staff was great but you two are the cream of the crop. Horses were all wonderful. Everyone was professional. Recommend this place with 6 stars if Yelp let me. read more

Frontier Pack Train has first class service while keeping the authenticity of the ride. I have now done two trips with my 11 and 14 year old. The first ride they were 9 and 12. It's their favorite trip of the year. I could take them to Hawaii, Disneyworld, anywhere and they would choose this first. Kent has done a great job of making everything easy for the riders. The food is amazing. The staff is amazing. Justin leads the group each day and is a true cowboy and Matt brings up the rear and makes sure no one is left behind. You truly feel a special bond with your horse and by the end of the trip you are sad to be leaving but already looking forward to the next year. The experiences i have shared with my kids and my friends on this trip will last a lifetime. I couldn't thank them enough for the wonderful memories they have made for my family. I have been riding with FPT just about every year since 1995... 20+ trips!... and with all honesty It is my favorite getaway...hands down. The stock are well treated, loved, and healthy. The food is great. The crew professional and accommodating,and the BEAUTIFUL country that you'll ride through is amazing....would recommend to anyone looking for adventure and fun....the "back country trips" are great for those of us who want to get into the wilderness without carrying a backpack ....the "mustangs in the wild" trip was awesome and unforgettable... and the "horsedrives" ~ met some of my best friends on them ~.cant wait for this season !!! read more

As our 14 year old put it "best vacation ever". What an amazing experience for our family!!! We went on the 1000 lakes ride which is 4 days camping/ riding/ fishing and eating amazing food. Our guides Duncan and Rrett were perfect!! Great personalities and good with the kids. If you're looking for an exciting pack trip with incredible scenery, great food, the best wranglers around, and horses for the novice rider to the experienced rider, the Fall Horse and Mule Drive is it. After each day of riding and herding the mules (who are highly entertaining just to watch), I loved riding into camp each evening to my tent already set up, the camp cooks making another great meal, and a hot shower! This was my first time doing something like this ever. I don't have my own horse or nor do I ride all the time, as a matter of fact I have minimal experience. I know enough just by being around them quite a bit as a child I.e. how get on and guide one left, right and make them stop. Dave put me on the perfect horse I felt comfortable and safe the whole time. The food was awesome (gained a bit of weight), but so worth it and the staff so helpful. My knees and butt were a bit sore, but again, at the end of the day the beauty you're exposed to and friends you make during your 4 day journey so out weighs the aches and few pains. Awful! Did the half day ride up the mountain and then back down. That's literally what it was. The trail up is extremely narrow and it is not a comfortable ride at all. Very little trees. We got to the top (almost) where the guides had us dismount and then they said that we had 10 minutes to look around so that we could start back down the same way. We questioned the brevity of the stay, and then one said that there was a natural spring nearby and asked if we wanted to see it. Of course! So we went to it and it's a rusty old pipe jammed into the ground with water coming out of it. We thought it was a joke. (It's natural, we were told, because the water supposedly comes out of the ground and through the old pipe!) After that, they said we could hike up the hill a bit and look at Mono crater if we insisted on staying a bit longer. So we did, but because the guides were too lazy to walk up the short hill with us, when we looked out we had no idea where the crater was or what we were even looking at. (You'd think a crater would be pretty obvious.) Anyway, we got back on our horses and went down in the hot sun. We were all dying to be done. The guides did not say hardly anything to us on the entire trip. I think the only thing one guide said on the way down was "your horse is peeing." Gee, thanks for the tour commentary. It got to the point where I was making stuff up about the valley just to have a laugh and kill the time. Everyone on our trip (and I mean everyone) hated it. We were just begging to be done. It was an uncomfortable, hot, difficult, dusty, and boring ride. We have gone on a fair number of horseback rides (Lake Tahoe, Mexico, Hawaii) where the rides and the guides were nice. This is all my opinion, of course, but I would never recommend this outfit to anyone! read more
