Froelich's is a little gourmet shop that I happened to stumble into while shopping on the main drag of Three Oaks. Their shelves are stocked with homemade relishes, bread and butter pickles, jams, a fridge containing jars of sun tea and lemonade, and a case with macaroni and fruit salads etc. Other gourmet groceries included things like smoked oysters and organic stocks, which are probably hard to come by in a small town. This place also houses a bakery; I picked up some oatmeal chocolate chunk w/ pecan cookies which manage to be chewy yet crisp and are not overly sweet, just have a caramelly note (one would think from brown sugar, but it's not on the ingredient label). There are some homey gifty items, and also a couple of tables where you can eat their soups, salads and sandwiches. Overall, seems like a nice local spot and a gourmet fix for those without ready access to a Whole Foods. read more

Extremely unwelcoming and rude service. We've had only the friendliest service in Three Oaks, so it was surprising to be treated so unkindly. As soon as we walked in, the woman at the counter (gray hair and glasses) said to us "what do YOU want?" We hadn't even had a chance to look at the menu. Simple things like asking what bagels they had or if they had regular lattes were met with disgust from the woman. Several eye rolls and sighs in such a brief amount of time. We felt like we were bothering her with our presence when we were nothing but kind. Latte tasted like water but the rest of the food was fine. This experience started our morning in a negative way, not sure why she had to be so unpleasant. A reminder to always be kind or at least professional! read more

I visited Three Oaks with some friends this past weekend for a birthday party. Froehlich's was recommended to us by someone who lives in St. Joseph. We stopped in a little before 10 on Sunday. Everyone was very attentive and pleasant. They had a bunch of goodies in the pastry case. I opted for a bagel, an apple cider donut, and hot tea. The apple cider donut was so delicious! I don't normally eat donuts but it looked so good and I'm glad I didn't pass it up. The tea was excellent, the bagel was good. They also have baked breads, tons of preserves, jams, and jellies (including a seedless strawberry jam). I brought home a loaf of brioche and we just made toast with it today. It's delicious and very buttery. It's a small cafe, and I imagine in the summer it gets packed, but if you're ever in the area make a stop at Froehlich's. It's worth the trip! read more

I'm happy to report the consistent friendlier service since my last post in 2019. Live locally and visit often. The bagels are fresh with just the perfect "crust" . The Turkey Club Quiche is fabulous. For us no onion fans this one has no crunch!!!!! I hope they offer this quiche often!!! Their egg and cheese breakfast croissant was tasty as well. Make sure to arrive early as their bagels sell out. Big fan of their rich flavored coffee (not acidic nor bitter). One of my all time favorites is their Apple Cider Donuts that I have only found in the fall. Exceptional!!! read more

Stopped here on our way from Chicago to Saugatuck, after finding it on Yelp. It's a really cute little place full of homemade jams, sauces, relishes, spreads and a variety of other things, the girls working there are incredibly nice and helpful, making it a very welcoming place. I ordered the mediterranean tuna sandwich on mutligrain and my partner went with a ham and cheese panini. I loved my sandwich; the tuna was mixed with a tasty vinaigrette, fresh tomatoes, onions, artichokes and celery, the bread was probably made that morning because it was too delicious and soft to be even a day old. There are several tables outside and a few tables indoors. We went late in the afternoon and it wasn't crowded so we found seats easily and our sandwiches were ready in about 10 minutes. If you're in the area or driving through, this is definitely an excellent choice for breakfast, lunch or a delicious snack. read more

Discovered a new favorite in SW Michiana this weekend. Froelich's Bakery does top of the line pasteries and cakes (and SQUARE donuts, yummy). Good coffee too. There is also a store section with lots of local utchies. Spacious interior with fun decorations and a couple tables for eating in. There is also a wooden deck on the sidewalk outside for eating "al Fresca"(or however you say that in Duetsche). Service is helpful, prompt & friendly. I will definitely be visiting regularly when back in the area. read more

I had food from here at a friend´s home so I took my family here on a Sunday morning with high hopes. The lady who took our order acted as if she was doing us a favor, with no smile or pleasantry at all. I told her it was our first time there and thanked her for her patience, to no avail. Food was good, but pies were overpriced and we won´t rush back due to the poor customer service. Disappointed. read more

I can speak intelligently on both sides of the street. First, the original (smaller, bakerylike). Their items are so unbelievably fresh. It's immaculate in there. Freshest and most appetizing displays. I have had many of the bakery items. Among my absolute favorites are: the blueberry muffins, salted pecan bar, and coconut macaroons (best I have ever had). Often, I have taken breads, bakery, and other pantry items home. Best ever, Michigan Mud Pie. Omg, it is wonderful. Had it for friends over for dinner. Everyone raved. I served it with homemade whipped cream. Now, across the street, the larger restaurant with more of a sit down presence and far more deli and pantry items... My family and I go here a lot. The food is so unbelievably good. We end up getting the same thing everytime, but all three of us get something different. I would be just as happy to with anything on the menu, but I am in love with the Peanut Noodle. The flavors compliment each other perfectly. It is seriously one of the most delicious lunch items I have ever had... anywhere. My son always gets the shrimp po boy, and my husband, the burger which he claims might be the best burger he's ever had. Potato salad and chips are also excellent. We eat out a lot. We are from Chicago and have lived in crazy foodie cities. This place is so worth the visit. One piece of advice. I think a lot of people here are on vacation and aren't necessarily in a hurry. I work in the heart of downtown Chicago where the pace is crazy. The service is a bit slow and laid back here, so be patient with a more slow placed level of service. It's always been pleasant enough, but they get busy. Really busy. And I do think sometime the staff is flustered, it i have never mistaken that for unpleasantness. read more

Cutest little bakery/deli. The workers/owner are such nice people. I like how this is a recycle and reuse area. They serve their food in pie pans, use paper straws, and have glass coffee mugs or glasses for water. Water and coffee if you dine-in, unless a special coffee order, is serve yourself. Lots of great items to choose from. I had the broccoli cheddar quiche and it was amazing, the crust was perfect. My husband and I shared an oversized cinnamon sugar square donut and he had the breakfast wrap. They have some eclecticism to the shop itself and sell many items they make in house for take home such as jams and relishes. There are also shirts, towels, and other keepsakes to take home. Mmm yummy! Three Oak's hidden but not-so-hidden gem. My mom had heard of this place, mainly because of the antiquing she had done in Three Oaks. The store is quaint and charming, with some nice outdoor seating. There were a few select items on the menu like a chicken curry wrap and gazpacho (both of these items I had seen at another delis in New Buff), and your classic deli sandwiches like tuna and egg salad, and a tofu sandwich option as well. The chicken curry wrap was huge and one of the best I've had, ever. No skimping on the sauce or the chicken! A little storefront that sells tons of jams, salsa, and homemade pasta salads, you should go out of your way to meander around N. Elm street to at least stop in and grab a bite. I've been trying to get to some out-of-the-way places, so Michigan sounded like a good idea. On a beautiful, sunny, spring day, my friend and I literally stumbled upon Froelich's after a long walk on the beach and snooping around for antiques. It's a quaint and inviting little gourmet shop/grocery/deli on the main drag in Three Oaks. There are a couple of tables outside, and a few more in the front of the white-washed, high-ceiling, sunshine-filled space, whose shelves are chocked full of canned veggies and dips and sauces, all made from their own organic farm ingredients. A dairy case in the middle displays a variety of sandwiches and salads, wraps. quiches, full-size deviled eggs, and and other tasty baked goods. We both chose the tuna salad sandwich which was not your ordinary tuna salad. Real (not canned) tuna fish, a little olive oil (no mayo) and veggies and capers and peppers. A true Mediterranean or Nicoise style. I would have liked some black olives in there in retrospect, and with the helpful staff, I'm sure they would have obliged me. They sell organic eggs there for $3.00 per dozen, and the nice lady at the counter had lot's of good free ovo-related advice: how best to remove those pesky shells (use eggs at least two weeks old) and storage (if they haven't been refrigerated, like their organic ones, they can be stored at room temperature.) I did not know that! And she told us stories about her grandmother, too. It's just that kind of place. Check it out for lunch when your wandering around Michigan's Harbor Country. It's delicious and quaint. Aunt Bee is hiding there in the woodwork. (And don't tell on me, but when no-one was looking, I squeezed a macaroon. Very soft!) read more

Once you wander into Colleen Froehlichs wondrous store/kitchen/deli you won't want to leave. She stocks the place from floor to ceiling with everything from kitchen supplies to birdhouses, and filled the middle with the most amazing flavors of home made jams and preserves (seedless raspberry is a technological masterpiece). Did I mention this is a deli slash sandwich shop slash bakery slash more home made wonders in this little store than you can possibly eat in one visit. Everything is fresh, the breads, salads, sandwiches and soups. Many of the vegetables are grown in her garden. Then the place is stocked with home made and home canned pickles, pasta sauce, and more. The only game in town: fresh bread, good deli items and kichen and hostess gifts. I have enjoyed the sandwiches I have ordered here. Service can be slow, and outside seating is limited in the summer, but all in all, it is a great spot offering what us city girls are used to. Lovely little spot. Came here this morning with my daughter. Owner was exceptionally friendly and sweet- told us she's been there 26 years. Small breakfast menu and house-made pastries were excellent. I had a spinach quiche which was very nice and my daughter had a giant cinnamon sugar donut that was yummy and very fresh. There is a small area to dine in and there is a gift shop as well. We were there super early but by the time we left it was getting very busy so I would suggest coming early. Brought home lots of baked goods for the rest of the sleeping family & they loved them. read more

The bakery deli was amazing I've been a customer there for years. But they've now opened a new space, in addition to the bakery, across the street. I was there for lunch today. My compliments to the chef! Shrimp Po'boy was wonderful and my lunch partners Burger was amazing. It's a large space and is broken up into a number of areas. The open kitchen is fun you can watch them make your food. There's a deli area where you can get something quick and take it out. There's a shopping area with fun items like coffee cups dish towels pillows wine and snacks. In the event center upstairs is unbelievable. An eclectic mix of old building and modern fixtures. This place feels kind of fancy yet factory-like and while they have some tasty sandwiches on pretty good bread, I am not so sure about their hot food-- my child ordered the kids buttered noodles and for $6, it was a tiny amount of noodles and we had to wait for a long time. My 9, 7 and 3 year old and I came here for breakfast pastries, baguette and coffee (for me). The place is quaint with interesting jams, books and brochures about SW Michigan happenings. The emphasis on conserve and recycle was nice and appreciated by my children--they loved that the coffee stirrers are pasta noodles and took a few home as a souvenir. We appreciated that they sliced 1/2 our baguette and gave us fresh blueberry jam to go with it. My daughter asked the staff about the culture of origin of the bakery because the baguette had specks and looked different from a French baguette. She was surprised that they didn't know if the origin was Polish or German. German or Polish, we loved our experience there and recommend it for a treat in Three Oaks. read more

The ONLY downside is that it's closed from Jan 1 to April. We were lucky to catch them open for the Valentine's weekend as Colleen loves to cook the fun cookies, candies, cakes that go along with it. The sandwiches are amazing, the coffee is outstanding and the other "stuff" is always interesting. Let's just say that my 6 and 9 year olds pretty much touch all of the goods. read more
