I love it here and definitely want to come back!…read more I stopped in with some friends for a drink before our reservation across the street, we had the best experience leaving me eager for my next visit. The drinks were so good and the menu looked amazing too! They have so many options to choose from, perfect place to share a few bites with a group. Very cute inside, we sat at the bar but they have tables as well as a patio too.

The setup itself is just weird; you have to stand outside and wait for someone to come out to seat you. When you go inside, its small and has kind of a "bar meets saddam hussein's palace" kind of vibe, there is gold everywhere in here. Not to mention its a bar that has been converted into a restaurant, its separated by the check-in desk by drapery. One good point is that all of the staff is very friendly and attentive, although I think our waitress had to cover every table in the place, which seems kind of not great for her! We started with some drinks, they were both good, no complaints there. After they came we ordered our food, we ordered them one at a time. First up was the bacon wrapped dates. These were pretty good, the bacon was cooked well and had some good crisp, it paired well with the dates and cheese inside. The walnut was kind of weird and my wife and I both thought for a second the date pit hadn't been removed. Next we got the corn empanadas, these were disappointing but not awful. The dough was cooked fine but it has absolutely no flavor, like nothing at all. The filling was also cooked ok, the corn had good texture, but similarly, had no flavor, about the only thing I could tint was a tiny bit of cilantro. Once you dip it in the sauce that comes with it, things improve, but we both felt the empanadas should be able to stand on their own. The last tapas item we got was the costillas al ajillo, these were both disappointing AND awful. They are advertised as "fall off the bone fried rib tips, garlic infused olive oil, crisp garlic chips" The only thing crispy about this was the meat itself, it was incredibly dry and had no flavor. There was a little bit of olive oil and some minced garlic, but not "crispy garlic chips". Credit where credits due they took if off the bill, but it was just incredibly bad. We finished with the chocolate flan which was quite good, no complaints there. All in all it was disappointing and I don't know that we would come back.

Vinhos - Nice jazzy atmosphere with vintage movies playing on the main screen. Super friendly staff and very tasty food.

We stopped in just before 6:00 and we're greeted by a friendly woman getting the restaurant ready for opening. We later came to find out she was an owner. She was so sweet and offered to seat us before the servers actually showed up, as they had worked a local event that day. The waitress soon came and our wonderful experience began. They have a great wine list and wine cocktails. We ordered three dishes and were pleased with the presentation and flavors. Pica-Pau - a traditional Portuguese dish with beef and spices in a delicious broth. It's served with bread for soaking up the broth. I really enjoyed this dish, especially the broth. Crostini di Mare - shrimp on crostini's with a tangy garlicky sauce on top. This was my favorite and I wouldn't hesitate to order this again. Sea Legs - octopus over a sweet potato mash. This was tasty as well and the octopus was cooked perfectly. The sweet potato mash is divine!! We also had a Caprese salad, pretty average, but nice presentation. The outdoor seating area is comfortable and so nice to people watch on the main drag. We really enjoyed ourselves and plan to go back next time we visit. The service is excellent, portions in line with tapas and atmosphere is great.

The flavor profile is slightly different but I could barely notice since I'm not so familiar with the cuisine. Food: Lingicua- dope presentation. It arrives on fire to your table. Pretty cool and the taste is good but ultimately it's just a sausage. Class streamed in white wine/garlic- really tasty. I really enjoyed this dish. It has a very similar profile to other clam/mussels in white wine dishes so I dunno if you necessarily hafta try it here but it was good. Octopus- was also really good but I wouldn't say any better or worse at other places over had octopus Duck rice- this was just ok. Duck was a lil dry. At $45 I wouldn't recommend. The portion is also tiny. I thought it was gonna be like a big paella or something. Overall everything was solid/tasty. Cocktails were surprisingly good. I'll say the only thing is the value/price. Portions are tiny and some things like the rice are really pricey for the portion that you get so I'd def be aware of that.

Pig ear salad - cold and crunchy, love the texture, wish there's a bit more acidity Beef tongue - really flavorful, texture of the meat is also really tender Filet mignon - my favorite dish, the acidity of the sauce is really interesting, even ordered extra bread to finish up that sauce Duck rice - pretty good too but not as memorable as other dishes Servers are really nice and welcoming, gave good introductions of the menu, we'll definitely come back and try more stuff!

Even at that odd hour, there weren't any seats left inside so I just hanged around the bar counter with a glass standing and they were nice enough to just serve me there. The bar has a large collection of the natural wines and the staff were very knowledgeable and kind, and the whole vibe felt like a good time. I saw the steak frites, and it looked so good, but the plate looked quite huge! But I couldn't resist, and decided to order the whole plate and oh my was it worth it. The steak was juicy, prime rib eye, medium rare on the rare side. So juicy, meaty, soft, but not too soft still retaining tasty texture to bite into. But what really elevated the steak was the yuzu and peppercorn. The spice was there distinctly to augment the steak, yet, it never got in the way of the fabulous taste of the rib eye. Top it all off, the fries were crispy with right touch of the salt. Together a perfect dish. I finished the whole big plate easy in probably less than 20 min. But wait, this is a bar after all. What took the whole experience to the zenith was the wine pairing. I've asked the bar tender what would go well with the steak plate and he recommended me the some red, sparkling natural wine. The wine was unique in that it looked like, but wasn't like a rose. Some how it was light and bubbly yet it retained the deep complex flavor of the red. Swirling, the wine refreshing the flavor of the steak while the steak complementing to the flavor of the wine. This wine, was a perfect match to complete the meal. The whole plate truly worked in unison, kudos to the chef, and the bartender! (In fact, the chef was mozying around the bar and I had to express my gratitude, but he seemed rather, not to the point of annoyed, but indifferent to it lol) I had to get more. I ordered the bluefin tuna and oh my. The tuna was so darn fresh, strong fresh flavor of tuna, with the lime zest and the sauce to give the right kick, all on the tostada crunch. The wine pairing was again immaculate. The whole tostada was gone before I truly knew what had happened. I then saw people ordering the creme brulee. I was pretty stuffed at this point but I had to get it. Red miso, madagascar brulee, what an odd combination I thought. But I do remember the sweet can go so well with salty and this was the testament to it. Brulee was soft, creamy, eggy, sweet, the potent swath of vanilla, but that hint of red miso, empowered the flavor and the scent that each scoop and the bite I took was kept emboldened. This is a definitive must try of Down Town San Jose, no exception allowed.

To start, they brought out a basket of warm corn and flour tortilla chips with salsa, refried beans, and cabbage. Everything was fresh and flavorful -- a perfect way to kick off the meal. Now, I suddenly feel those visits may increase exponentially. I've also never stepped in the store, but have only longingly gazed at it from outside, as they were still closed for the New Year. But if there's one thing I can say about it, it's that the fudge is amazing. Unfortunately, I could only try two kinds, but the fact that I plowed through the Tupperware full of the Peppermint fudge seems to tell me I'd probably enjoy other varieties with as much enthusiasm. I've also tried the Gingerbread but the Peppermint won me over. It's incredibly soft with chunks of soft peppermint candy sunk into the chocolate. But unlike other fudge that often feels so dense and so sugary your teeth start to hurt, C.R.'s makes it feel like a light indulgence and fantastic (nightly) dessert--so good that you eat five or six and pretty soon you've managed to eat your way to the bottom of the box. My mom tells me that the fudge's sweetness is matched only by Carol herself who makes the delectable squares. It warms me to know such talent surfaces in a little town, and unlike other shops that may fall by the wayside, C.R. Fudge better stay in business if the people know what's good for them.
