Unfortunately, I am not in the popular camp that loved FreshFin. I am spoilt for choice when it comes to Poke in Chicago and usually eat it once a week, if not more so my expectations are higher. During a recent work trip to Madison, I stopped by here for a quick lunch and was surprised to see no one else dining in the entire time I was there. I got a make my own bowl. The name does justice to the food offered. The Poke bowls are prepared with the freshest ingredient and bursting with flavors. Well done! I ordered a rainbow bowl to go on a Sunday night. It was a quick order process. When I got my bowl I was excited to see it so full. However when I started to dig in I was disappointed in the amount of fish and sauce in the bowl. Compared to other poke places the amount of fish given was underwhelming. I was also extremely disappointed in the amount of sauce on the bowl. Again, compared to other poke bowl places it was barely there. I ended up adding my own shoyu at home. One of the only things I did enjoy was the amount of seaweed salad given. It was a generous amount, for which I was grateful. Was it enough to excuse the small portions of fish & minimal sauce? Overall, my bowl was a bit underwhelming and slightly disappointing. It might be good for those who enjoy more of the toppings sans protein. I might give it a go again in the future. If so I'll be sure to ask for extra protein & extra sauce. read more

Freshfin Poke is my favorite poke place. It's more of a fusion take on poke. I always get a regular mango tango with half brown life and half mixed greens. I've been going to Freshfin Poke since 2017 - their Milwaukee North Ave location. The downside of this location is that there is no parking lot because it is downtown. The Mango Tango is delicious. It's balanced perfectly with the mango, sauce and salmon. Over the years, their serving sizes have gotten bigger and more appropriate to match their prices. This location used to have metal forks but have replaced it with compostable forks. I love the effort for more sustainability. You can also join their loyalty program where each dollar counts as a point and after you hit a certain amount of points, you can redeem a discount amount. You just have to remember to give them your phone number every time you order so they can count that towards your point total. Over the last 6 months, they have changed how they reward based off points and it's harder to track how many points you have unless you ask them in person. read more

(Zucchini noodles were $1.50) I was really impressed with the zucchini noodles, they were fresh and crisp! A very good choice if you don't want/like rice. Received email confirmation at 12:30PM to expect it within 35-55 minutes. Got a notification of when my food left the restaurant and my GrubHub guy called me at 12:53PM. This worked out great--especially since it was like, 1 degree out! I ordered a large BYOB and put almost everything in it, along with requests of extra sauces and wasabi. My eyes were definitely hungrier than my stomach. My bowl was packed and I could barely finish. Ingredients were so fresh and tasty! I was full past dinner time...! I love me some poke bowl it's probably one of my top foods right now so when I saw FreshFin was coming to Hilldale I freaked out! I purchased the rainbow bowl which has tuna, salmon, pineapple, avocado, cilantro and lots more. The quality of the seafood was very nice and ingredients were fresh. After taking a workout class with my sister, we were really craving a healthy, fresh dish for lunch. Despite it being winter in WI and negative degrees outside, poke was calling our name. Normally, Miko Poke has been my poke place, but we wanted to try a new poke placed today (though, not exactly new as my sister and I have had FreshFin in Milwaukee before). Nonetheless, just like the location in Milwaukee, Madison's FreshFin is a great place for poke. Clean, modern aesthetic. I love that their condiment bar has a selection of Furikake (Japanese Rice Seasoning) to choose from to add to your poke as desired. I had the Spicy Tuna Signature Bowl. My BF had the Coconut Curry Shrimp Signature Bowl and my sister had the Kailani Signature Bowl. All signature bowls are customizable, which I appreciated. Huge portion sizes (I could barely finish the regular size, was super full and probably would've been better off saving some as leftovers). Fresh ingredients. My Spicy Tuna bowl had a tad bit too many jalapeños for my taste, a bit overpowering for me given the delicate flavors of the tuna and all the other ingredients. Next time, I think I would either ask for less or no jalapeños and just rely on the siracha aioli for the spice factor. We also ordered the truffle crab salad, which sounded delicious, but honestly was a bit underwhelming. The ingredients were really fresh, but the flavors were lacking. This doesn't factor into my rating, but this location is not super convenient for me as I don't live downtown and it's hard to find street parking. I'll be honest. I've been so wary of poké places because of the random influx of poké in Madison. The workers were very nice which made it easy to order at a new place. I made a build your own bowl, regular size, white rice, with ahi tuna and salmon. I've visited FreshFin twice and I would say my experience was okay, nothing terrible or amazing either way. This review is about my second visit. The decor and ambience of the place is certainly remarkable. The lighting and modern design is excellent for a spot under The James. That being said, the food did not taste fresh and took more than 20 minutes to bring out to us. The manager apologized and brought everything over, but one bowl came 5-6 minutes before the other. We shared a super expensive juice, and it was okay, but the Poke just wasn't as good as other places in Madison. The tuna and salmon cuts were simply not fresh. They tasted aged and bland, which is not what you want from expensive sushi bowls. Somehow the rice was even subpar. I would give FreshFin another try if someone asked me to meet them there, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there. The food is expensive and the quality is average at best. Authentic poke can be found closer to State street -- I recommend hungry Poke fans head there. read more

This isn't your typical poke place, almost like a fusion on a few of their bowls. Place is really cute and very clean and tidy. You order first and then sir wherever. I'm a value person so I made my own bowl, regular and you still get 2 meat options with that and as many add ons and sauces as you want! Amazing. Everything was fresh to me and they didn't skimp on anything. I also got the smoke salmon app, which I wasn't a fan of, it needed something saucy in there even though it was a spread, I found it kinda dry. I also love the variety of dry seasonings they have available, which is unique to me. For 'dessert' I got the açaí bowl which was a little soupier than other ones I've had but the flavor was there! I am a big fan of FreshFin. First of all the decor is sups cute and I love the wood and big ropes. It is almost wooden ship like, but v trendy. The staff is always friendly and helpful. The serving sizes are generous... I usually get the regular size and it definitely fills me up! My favorite bowl is the Curry Coconut Shrimp. I love that you can either build your own or customize one that is already on the menu. For example, I do half shrimp half chicken and then half brown rice half mixed greens. I also love their juices. I wanted the ginger lemonade (apple, ginger, lemon) one to be my favorite. I wish there was more ginger kick to it. I still need to try the tropical sunrise (orange, pineapple, carrot, lemon ginger) before claiming my favorite. They have deals too! This is my favorite Poké place in the downtown area! It's food is delicious, fresh, and it fills you up without feeling gross! I've had a few of their menu items now, and I haven't had one I dislike. The spicy tuna and mango tango have been my favorite, as they're the raw fish you expect from Poké. I've had the Kailani as well, made with chicken and shrimp, which was good but not what I wanted from this kind of meal. Their curry coconut shrimp is very very good, and I'll order it again, but it's definitely different than what you'd expect at a place like this. The space is beautiful with fun fish decorations, and the staff is always extremely friendly. Overall I think it's a great addition to Madison, and it's very good food.
