Though my neighborhood is changing rapidly (for better in some ways, and for worse in others), Crown Heights is still something of a food desert. Even if you can find what you're looking for, you're often paying through the nose for "luxury" goods like fresh basil or parmesan cheese in a wedge instead of a shaker can. How does a basic local grocery store consistently just not have, say, chicken breasts? Or chicken broth? (This is making me sound chicken obsessed, but you get my point.)
Thankfully, FreshDirect gives me easy access to the groceries of my dreams, at mostly reasonable prices. I love that they maintain a good selection of organic foods and local produce(for those days when I am too lazy to drag my ass to the the green market). The quality of their produce is good enough that I've even been able to get over not picking it out for myself. I can start an order early in the week, lock in my preferred Saturday delivery slot, and keep changing it all week, up until the night before delivery. I am also thrilled to see that the company has responded to feedback asking them to pack their boxes more efficiently, so I no longer have to feel guilty when I receive a giant box containing a single can of tomatoes.
I've generally had very few problems with delivery, though I think the delivery staff occasionally get a bit rough with the boxes (but are otherwise very pleasant and courteous). I've had eggs, beer bottles, and some poor tormented mussels arrive broken before. I also once received a spoiled chicken. However, FreshDirect is very responsive with their customer service, and always credits my account to make up for any issues that arise. And sometimes the errors are in your favor, like when they sent me some fresh salsa last week-- bonus!
I am also sometimes frustrated with large discrepancies between the estimated weight per item for produce and meat and what they actually send, particularly when I'm planning for large gatherings. If, for example, I need 10 pounds of squash for Thanksgiving dinner, I order three squashes estimated to weigh four pounds each, and don't know until the morning my order is delivered that I'm getting two-pound squashes instead, it's super frustrating, and sometimes impossible, to have to run out to get more. If I had time to go get the food, I wouldn't have paid to have it delivered in the first place. It seems like it would solve a lot of problems to go by total weight rather than by the quantity of items.
On the catering tip, I used to order their stuff a lot at work, but I found their party trays to be pretty overpriced, and that they frequently arrived in poor condition-- guac browned, trays tipped sideways, etc. (Believe it or not, Whole Foods has some of the best and most reasonably priced catering I've found-- go figure.)
That being said, though, FreshDirect is still awesome. I dub it 95% blessing and 5% curse. read more
