Wow wow wow! The food!…read more The presentation! The ambiance (gentle lighting, semi formal, but cozy)! The service! I was beyond impressed. The food exceeded my expectations entirely. This place was quiet at 5:30 on a Sat night. At 6pm a party of 4 came in and at 6:30 a party of 2 came in. I don't know how this place was not PACKED because this food is INCREDIBLE! Truly. This gem is hidden away in a plaza right off of the highway. The chef is also the waiter, and likely the owner. You can tell he takes pride is his food and knows exactly what he is doing in the kitchen. Although we don't eat meat, both the lamb and chicken specials sounded delicious and I am sure they are! Do yourself a favor and have an incredible meal here. This guy deserves to have a line out of the door!

I can see why the place was empty on a Monday evening when I arrived. The server who apparently is…read morethe cook as well was pretty slow and not very attentive despite the fact that I was the only one there, likely for the last few hours. Before I left, there was a couple who came in who he badgered loudly when they asked him for suggestions. He's definitely not a people person. He does a better job being in the back of the house as the food was grilled well. I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and tried something different that I wouldn't normally gravitate towards. Lamb is not my favorite but I ordered it anyway despite coming in for the salad. I also had the lime and mint drink. Pretty expensive for a small glass and no refills. The food wasn't worth the price and the service was poor. I literally had to go to the back to ask him for extra napkins which he eventually took from an adjacent empty table. Did I mention the place was empty for most the of the time I was there? I also had to get up and go to the back to ask for more water and finally for the check. He was busy washing dishes the last time. Glad I tried something different but next time I do it won't be at cafe 28.

The young man behind the counter was SO HELPFUL and explained everything well to me! However, he did not say the size of the sliders so I ordered two! Needless to say, one would have been enough! It was "meaty", had great flavor and the sauce was so good! The second one - I took the fried cauliflower out of the sandwich and air-fried it to reheat it and put in the sandwich potato roll. It was so good and I then didn't throw away m

Not quite dinner time, so the place was empty. Which was great, because we had questions. The woman, whose name I can't remember, was super helpful and guided us through the billboard/menu. We weren't starving, but we got: DAVE'S #1: 2 Tenders w/Fries DAVE'S BITES Medium Drink We asked for *Medium Spicy* But maybe should have asked for mild. Feeling the tops of our heads heat up and sweat may have been an indication The Tenders were big; like a half breast. Coated with a dry-rub. Surprisingly, the chicken was so moist and juicy. The Bites were more like breaded chunks, with the same juicy-ness as the Tenders. Fries were good, and we refilled our soda cup like 4 times to douse the fire. Despite the heat, there is good underlying flavor. Don't forget to grab some packs of honey. Goes great with the chicken. We left satisfied, but at the end of the day its's just chicken

I am so glad that I gave this spot another chance!…read more After visiting initially when they first opened, I was not super impressed enough to return... my husband brought home food from there last week.. and we've eaten there twice already! So very tasty! We ordered the chicken tikka masala and butter chicken... both were extremely delicious.. from the perfect amount of heat.. wonderfully seasoned chicken.. great amount of sauce per basmati ratio.. but what takes it over the top was a salad and pita that comes with your meal.. my goodness.. the best pita from consistency and flavor.. yes, a pita can have flavor.. and that salad.. I could eat it every day.. lettuce, tomato, onion, chickpeas all tossed in a white dressing that they should bottle and sell. Friendly service.. I will probably look to be here once a month. And that is a lot with all of the options that we have in the area.

Service was quick - we ordered take out…read more The menu they offer seems a little all over the place, but sometimes there's nothing wrong with offering some variety. I ordered the paneer platter and it was ok. I feel there was more rice than the paneer given. I wish there was a spice level option as well because I like spicy food. The web page pictures are misleading because for one the Makhni in the picture is more of a yellow curry base, whereas what I got was more of a red-orange (more so the color shown in the tikka masala image). My friend ordered the butter chicken and it was the same deal with the color, but I also have never had either dish before with a more yellow curry base so lol I just wanted to say it's inconsistent. We also ordered the Heavenly Hummus to share. Hummus was good, pita was good, but whatever was spread on top of the pita to make it a "garlic bread" was very strange tasting. We didn't particularly enjoy that portion of the pita.

But the man serving customers at the counter (on a Sunday afternoon) was so: gentle, kind, polite, welcoming and respectful that he immediately put me at ease. I relaxed into this new environment. And I read their menu two or three times; then, I decided on a falafel gyro. It was only 9.99, which makes it really affordable for the UWS! Plus, I got to choose which veggies and sauces to put on it. I enjoyed that sense of agency with my food...I'm not a picky eater, just highly selective. : ) With that, he patiently assisted me in making a beautiful and colorful falafel gyro, which I enjoyed quite a lot. I even texted some of the following photos to my Dad, since I thought this dish looked so gorgeous! : ) My Dad agreed. Hehe ~ With that, this place's low key and friendly vibe paired with its inexpensive pricing (for what you're receiving), makes it a wonderful neighborhood attraction. The food was so delicious, and the location was so convenient! (It's just one street and an Avenue away from the 1 train at 96th.) Go check out Shah's today -- you surely won't leave hungry! : ) With Gratitude, Peace & Love, Katherine "Kat"
