Grabbed lunch a short while ago at The Halal Spot in Old Bridge. I have been here on quite a few occasions and this place never disappoints. The food is outstanding and the people are very friendly and extremely welcoming. My "go-to" dish is the chicken and rice platter with salad. As mentioned, the food quality is exceptional, very flavorful and always fresh. Chicken chunks are very tender and well seasoned. The rice is delicious and the salad is always fresh, crisp and cold. They have a wide variety of sauces and they always ask if you need more. And, yes, the platters are enormous. It is literally impossible to walk out of this place feeling hungry. The Halal Spot also has lamb, falafel, butter chicken and wide variety of other dishes. So if you are looking for a place that serves outstanding food, enormous portions that is reasonably priced. Service was quick - we ordered take out. The menu they offer seems a little all over the place, but sometimes there's nothing wrong with offering some variety. I ordered the paneer platter and it was ok. I feel there was more rice than the paneer given. I wish there was a spice level option as well because I like spicy food. The web page pictures are misleading because for one the Makhni in the picture is more of a yellow curry base, whereas what I got was more of a red-orange (more so the color shown in the tikka masala image). My friend ordered the butter chicken and it was the same deal with the color, but I also have never had either dish before with a more yellow curry base so lol I just wanted to say it's inconsistent. We also ordered the Heavenly Hummus to share. Hummus was good, pita was good, but whatever was spread on top of the pita to make it a "garlic bread" was very strange tasting. I am so glad that I gave this spot another chance! After visiting initially when they first opened, I was not super impressed enough to return... my husband brought home food from there last week.. and we've eaten there twice already! So very tasty! We ordered the chicken tikka masala and butter chicken... both were extremely delicious.. from the perfect amount of heat.. wonderfully seasoned chicken.. great amount of sauce per basmati ratio.. but what takes it over the top was a salad and pita that comes with your meal.. my goodness.. the best pita from consistency and flavor.. yes, a pita can have flavor.. and that salad.. I could eat it every day.. lettuce, tomato, onion, chickpeas all tossed in a white dressing that they should bottle and sell. Friendly service.. I will probably look to be here once a month. The mixed gyro platter was awesome, fresh veg and really well seasoned meat. Everything was nice and spicy, I really like it. If this was all I got, 5 stars. The problem is I also got a 3 piece fried chicken, curly fries, and mozz sticks. Even though the chicken was cooked correctly, the batter was bland. The curly fries were absolutely aweul- instantly trashed, and the mozz sticks were limp. All bad there, just skip all this. read more

Far better than Halal Guys! I stopped by during Ramadan, one of the owners mistook me for a Muslim and asked if I was fasting. I told him, I was not, as I'm Punjabi. He told me that he was going to offer me a date. These are the types of interactions you never forget. I asked his name, Mohammad and introduced myself. I ordered the chicken platter, and it's fresh. I'm sorry, but I don't understand how Halal Guys have done so well, I'm not saying their food is garbage, I've eaten there but it's definitely a lot of hype. They also have some other "Indian" aka Desi dishes, butter chicken etc. and they could definitely charge more. Since, I've been back a couple of times at the request of my family, and met Mohammad's son, also super friendly! Strongly recommend you check this place out. Do yourself a favor and get frozen food rather than getting this platter from them. I understand the platter have fries in them but these fries were not edible. They were probably triple fried - 100% sure they were leftover and they dumped it inside the meal after frying them again. With each bite of food all I would taste is grease/oil. Had high hopes for this place. I love Halal food and I thought this place would live up to the top places in NYC. Oh man was I wrong.... this place is below average. First off, the food comes out extremely slow and it wasn't busy at all. I thought I would be in and out but it took 30 minutes for the food to come out!! Cant believe how slow it is. ZERO URGENCY and it wasn't even busy!!! They also made multiple mistakes for orders which delayed everything. Do not come here if you are in a rush. I went with the hotspot platter and the mixed platter. The hotspot platter is a halal plate with cheese and french fries included. Weird combination and I wasn't a fan of it. It had the traditional meat and rice but with fries in it and cheese. It would probably be edible if I was hungover. The mixed platter was better but not up to the standards I set in my head. I prefer the halal carts in nyc to this. The yelp nation fooled me with the 4.5 star rating. This place is nowhere close to that. Skip it and if you are craving halal food drive to NYC! read more

The now ubiquitous Chicken/Gyro & rice platter with white sauce made famous by NYC food carts like the Halal Guys and Rafiqi's have slowly been making their way into the suburbs the past couple of years, and one of the newer local spots is the Halal Spot. I ordered a takeout meal of the Lamb Gyro platter and a 2-piece Falafel. You get a very good portion for your money, as there was a lot of seasoned yellow rice and cubed pieces of Lamb Gyro meat. The seasoned yellow rice was very flavorful, cooked to a pleasant slight bite, and was fluffy. The Lamb Gyro meat was tasty as many of the pieces had a slight char and a hint of smoky flavor to go along with the distinct delicious gamey taste of lamb. As part of the platter you can choose various vegetables and my selections were lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, jalapeno peppers, banana peppers, and an assortment of pickled vegetables (cauliflower, carrots, ect.). They were all fresh and provided a nice balance to the rest of the platter. Also provided were a trio of sauces: green, white, and red. I grade the green sauce the best as it was full of herbaceous cilantro flavor and also having a bit of tang. The red sauce was naturally a hot sauce, and I was surprised how hot it was as most restaurant hot sauces are fairly tame (to cater to a broader audience). I enjoyed the heat! As for the white sauce it was just average. A bit less tangy and less rich than I expected; it at least provided a cooling element to the hot sauce. My side order of Falafel was not that good; dry and slightly hard with the only positive was it's nice seasoning. The Halal Spot is solid; providing a filling, albeit unremarkable, meal. read more

I am sadly dissappointed with this spot since it was closed to me, but I guess I have to drive a else where to get my halal fix. I ordered takeout of the Chicken/Lamb Gyro platter. The gentlemen getting my order was cordial, but the wait for my order was more than I expected it took more than 20 mins to finish. Overall the platter had a reasonable portion, but I found the chicken/lamb to be dry and the dry hard to bite into. I enjoy the idea where this establishment gives you a variety of vegetables to include in your platter that usually aren't just the lettuce and tomatoes. Some of the vegtable I put in my platter was the jalapeno peppers, banana peppers, and the chickepea salad. However, it doesn't outweight the quality of the rice and protien choice I ordered. In addtion the sauces they provided weren't bad, but I found them to be light in flavor department. A chain restaurant but a very good chain restaurant. The platters are very generous. The food is good. The hot sauce is really hot! It is not fancy inside but there is enough seating and the place is clean. Their signature sauce is mayonnaise based, so I couldn't eat it. If you are allergic to eggs avoid this. Came here for the first time to compare against Halal Guys which is about a 10 minute drive away. I got the mixed platter (chicken/lamb), which is my normal order at Halal Guys. The short take: The Halal Spot has a more refreshing taste in comparison to the Halal Guys. It's less oily, and you can choose from more vegetables/additions. I will be coming here again. Portion: The amount of food is in between the small/regular at Halal Guys. The meat: they use tandoori chicken and gyro. I preferred the Halal Spot's meat as it wasn't as oily and the taste of the lamb came through more. The optional additions: Lettuce, tomato, onion, pickled vegetables, chickpeas, pepperoncini and giardiniera. The ingredients were fresh and I really enjoyed having the chickpeas. However, the pickled vegetables were too vinegary (to the point I made that face when you eat something too acidic). The sauces: They have more options than Halal Guys. I prefer the Halal Guys sauces more, but the Halal Spot is more generous with the sauces. read more

Well I spent $44 for the feh meals. My son didn't like the chicken briyani, said Aswan much better. My lamb gyro was just ok, not as good as Halal guys, my wife complained that combo chicken lamb platter sans pita was too spicy, and I thought the "Indian" fries were feh. I was very excited to try this place for lunch but couldn't be more disappointed. I'm currently waiting over an hour and a half for delivery and no food in sight. I called twice and the delivery guy isn't even at the restaurant yet! They didn't call me to tell me it was running late and didn't compensate me anything for the terrible service! I haven't even tried the food but I won't be coming back. I'm not sure who trains their employees but especially during these times I'd expect much better customer service! read more

It's a little hard to review Halal spot on my recent visit. I ordered the Hotspot platter which has chicken, lamb, fries and cheese toppings and signature sauces. I thought that these ingredients would be separate, but unbeknownst to me, the fries, chicken, lamb and cheese is cooked in the griddle together, so the cheese is melted and coats the mass of food. This was placed on top of rice, and the veggie toppings of your choice, and sauce(s) of your choice. When cooked together it tasted good but I'm not one to eat that much fries and cheese because I don't love that huge greasy feeling. So, I'm left to discern the flavors of each ingredient individually. I felt the meats had good flavor; the fries were good (thin and crispy) ;the veggies were fresh; the rice was decent ; and the white sauce and hot sauce was good, but not as good as Halal Brothers sauces, although I think the actual food was better. Definitely a great value for the amount of food you get and how little money it was for this platter. What I did love, because of my sweet tooth, was their humongous chocolate chip walnut cookie. It's a large cookie with soft center and crunchy outside. It's a must get! Next time, I'll know how to order and order the regular platters or gyros. The signature dishes seem to have the ingredients blended together. In addition, they also serve curry and fries. The space has a few tables and counter seating by the front door and a bunch of tables at the other end of the restaurant. It looks clean, but if you look closely, the tables could be wiped better, plus the floors were sticky when they've been open for only half an hour.
