I was visiting family in Kansas City area and we wanted to pickup some donuts. This place wasn't too far and had good reviews. Its located in a small strip mall and the sign just says Donuts- not Fresh Donuts. This place seems more family owned versus a chain- it sticks to classics. I really like how you can pick your filling and they do it right in front of you. It looked like they had strawberry jam, lemon and frosting- not sure if that changes. We got a random assortment- jelly filled, frosted filled, chocolate sprinkle cake, vanilla sprinkle yeast, 2 chocolate long johns and a glazed yeast. I love supporting local Kansas City restaurants, especially when they're only six miles away. This morning I made my first trip to Fresh Donuts to see why it has almost a perfect rating on Yelp. I also wanted to know why the line snakes out the front door. Given it was Father's Day and a Sunday there were 10 customers outside in line and maybe five inside. I first saw this donut shop online thanks to Yelp saying it rated the best in all of Missouri and I was not disappointed one bit. The donuts here were a bit different from what I expected but I guess that is what makes it better than the rest of the state. The nice lady at the counter, Fulesia, was so kind I felt like I was seeing long lost family! I even asked her what makes their donuts so special and she told me it was that they were made with love. Went here at 10:30 on a Saturday morning. The line was out the door but wasn't a terribly long wait. I got an old fashion, blueberry, strawberry, and double chocolate. All of them were cake donuts. I managed to snag the last blueberry which I was happy about lol. All of them tasted great. None of them were too sweet and they were all soft and pillowy. The old fashion just had a small hint of sweetness which I really enjoyed. Probably the best old fashion I've had from any donut place. They also have savory items with sausage and hotdogs but I'll have to try those some other time. If you go here I'd recommend going as early as you can since they do close at 1. The donuts here are delicious and much better than Lamar's. The variety offered is somewhat normal, but they also have interesting toppings for filled donuts: biscoff, Oreo, and butterfinger. The white cream filling is very good-- it's unique in that it tastes like a nice cake frosting of some sort. It compliments the rest of the donut well and is filled to the max. I couldn't eat all of the filling as it was excessively sweet. The prices are a bit outrageous for donuts, so this isn't a weekly trip I would take. She charged me $8 for two donuts and a kolache. The cashier was a bit rude when ordering. I don't think it's kind to tell someone to view the menu instead of just answering their question. If I had seen the menu, I would have read it and not asked. If someone is a first timer, they're going to be unfamiliar with the menu. I don't like to go back to places where I'm not treated well. With the early sell-outs, best of lists and almost universal 5 star reviews, I was expecting a good product and they delivered. I ordered a cinnamon roll and a cream cheese danish, both of which I shared with my wife later in the day; both were exceptional. I also ordered an item that was a doughy crescent roll filled with sausage, cheese and jalapeño. I consumed it as soon as I got back in my vehicle and gosh darnit, 2 days later I'm still mad that I didn't go back in and buy the entire tray to eat them all week.
