I had the special Salmon risotto and it was fantastic. My fiance has a peppered steak as he was craving manly meat. We then shared a bakewell tart served with Ice Cream at the end of the meal. We arrived into a cold, snowy and surprisingly busy Bakewell considering the weather conditions…read more(only briefly got above freezing all day!) at around lunchtime, the centre as always was very busy, so we decided on the Pointing Dog and Duck, a bar and restaurant that was adjacent to where we had parked. Out of the centre slightly, we easily got a table without a booking, the restaurant itself being quite expansive, with a good range of seating and plenty of space. Our round table was perfect for lunch, very sociable. There is also outdoor seating too, which would be lovely on Summer's night. A woodburner added much needed heat to the restaurant, but it was still a little chilly where we were sat, because our table was next the large glass entrance door. The Pointing Dog & Duck has a sizeable bar, with a good variety of beer and wine, but it was soft drinks all round, as most people were driving. There are separate lunch and dinner menus, both of which had a decent variety of classic and more unusual dishes. Going straight for the mains, there was a good selection of dishes like fish and chips, Steak Frites, and Caesar Salad. Between the five of us though we had a pizza topped with duck, Hoisin sauce and coriander, crisp, large and tasty; a mushroom and spinach rigatoni, probably the pick of the dishes, packed full of flavour, and a decent sized portion. Two of our party opted for the Hake fillet, with Chorizo and Cannellini beans, a hearty dish perfect for a winter's day. I went for the Pdog Bacon Cheeseburger, again a sizeable, tasty burger, with a mountain of fries, but maybe next I'll be more adventurous next time. One course and lots of talking later, we were all pretty much full, no room the intriguingly named 'Snicker's Mess', maybe next time. This is definitely a venue we will visiting again soon.

A fab day to end what started off as a course. It was the first time to visit Bakewell for me where…read morewe had gone for a guided walk to the area. A nice place if you like watching loads of seagulls, swans, ducks and fish all in the same place. The day was gloomy but what lifted our spirits was the homity pie from the Bloomers of Bakewell. Absolutely brilliant traditional pie and they also claim to be the home of "THE FIRST AND ONLY ORIGINAL BAKEWELL PUDDING". The place is quite small but hosts a great amount of variety each more tempting than the other. It's almost like the food shouting out to you "you gotta try me or you've missed something brilliant". The prices are absolutely reasonable and I got about dinner for 4 of us for under a £10.3 including dessert. They also hoard a bespoke collection of 60 local and British cheeses. Do not forget to try their chocolate fudge cake which almost melts in your mouth. Wish this were closer to Leeds but surely will go there just for the pies.

We were told that the Bakewell tart is more authentic...it was a baking mistake that started it all. The shop is charming with lots of baked goodies beyond the tart. We just chose one and took it for dessert. Overall it was good but terribly sweet and not particularly to our liking. I'd try a slice if you can get one and leave a whole pie behind. It just doesn't seem like all that big a deal in the end.

Just a quick review for Bakewell Deli due to the fact that on both occasions I nipped in on the…read moresame day they were the quickest experiences ever. First off I needed a dine and go lunch before my trip to the Thornbridge brewery (something had to soak up the beer...) and I got a really tasty smoked salmon white roll for £3.50. The next occasion was a few hours later when I popped in to see if they had any bakewell tarts left that I could buy and take home for dessert that night. They were just literally shutting the doors but the friendly owner let me in and sold me a few slices - at a discount even due to her saying they would have been better eaten that night (I love independent business') I literally didn't have time to hang around and smell the roses but it's a really cool sandwich shop and deli - plus the sandwich and tarts were pretty damn good!

Hunger strikes on a day out in Bakewell and while most of the group scatters for pasties,…read moresandwiches and ryvita snaps, my pregnant friend declares a craving for fish and chips. Now granted we'd only eaten breakfast barely two hours earlier but who was I not to give the pregnant lady what she wants?! So it was that she and I found ourselves queuing out the door of this place, figuring that the most popular and nice-looking place on the main street had to be good, right?! (though thinking about it, most of those in the queue looked like tourists so it may have been a case of the blind leading the blind... but anyway!) Inefficient counter queuing system aside, the service was really friendly and with our two mini fish set to take another 5mins the guy kindly offered to split a large fish between us (= cheaper, quicker and more fish each! Boom!). We had them 'open' rather than wrapped up, and the salt+vinegar is DIY so unlike the good old days you can avoid giving yourself a heart attack. Sadly I found the batter too thick in places, so ended up leaving much of this and just eating the fish. The chips were delicious though, as agreed by the envious, healthy-eating friends who soon came over to steal some. There's a proper seated restaurant attached next door but I recommend queuing at the (cheaper) classic chippy counter, then scoffing it by the river 50 yards away. Pretty good value for the portion size and I didn't regret following my mate's lunch choice at all. Yeah so what if I'm not eating for two?! ;)

It was quite late on in the afternoon so unfortunately most of the tearooms around the town were closed.... This little lucky find down a quaint side street was still open for business!! We all had tea and a slice of their delicious bakewell tart!! Their selection of other tarts and cakes also looked amazing but "when in rome"!! There was also food menu with a selection of tapas and sandwiches and an interesing menu of Novus branded teas which sounded great! The cafe is also connected to a little gift shop so you can roam around when awaiting ur tasty sweet treats to be served!

"what kind of cheese?" ...... In the end he had a brie salad and I had the Cran-Brie (brie, cranberry sauce & walnuts) from the menu both on granary bread. They were lovely!
