I've been following French Wink via email since August of 2023. I didn't realize their store was on West 29th! This was a happy discovery while on my way to Magnet Theatre! I thought the store would be closed when I arrived around 6:30pm, but I learned they stay open until 8pm. A host of the adjacent restaurant walked me over to the shop. I looked around for about 15 minutes filling my arms with all the French treasures I could get my hands on. I grew an affinity for Maxim's chocolate crêpes after stopping by the store at The Louvre. This is a classic souvenir from Paris with sweets that live up to the decadence of the packaging. The Belle-Époque comes to life in the Georges Goursat illustrations from the actual Maxim's cafe. I bought this travel box of 24 (dark and milk) pieces to share with friends ($19.90). I personally like to add in a dab of the Créme de Marrons de l'Ardèche ($8?). This chestnut gel is unique and I highly recommend trying some if you are searching for something sweet and new to your palette. I also picked up Féret "Le Baume" ($17). This natural ingredient, shea butter, skin-moisturizing balm comes in a cute yellow tin that evokes Toulouse Lautrec-like paintings. This went on slightly glossy, but absorbs well into the skin. The scent of honey and chamomile is calm and not overpowering. The store has samples of all the beauty products, so you can try before you buy. I didn't ask questions, but the staff was available and ready to help me if I needed. I appreciate a store that allows you to read labels and spend time with the products before deciding what you need. Outside of the Maxim's, chestnut cream, and hand balm, I also bought an assortment of fruit-flavored jellies for my friend who just flew into town. In all I spent about $50 to take a 15 minute stroll buying up some flavors and scents to evoke memories of France. I've shared my treasured finds with friends and can't wait to return with them.

They will let you know if anything you're interested in is on sale or can be sold at a discounted price. The only thing you must keep in mind is that there are NO returns. Note that I've previously stepped inside the shop to survey the selection, and last night I stopped in for what was only supposed to be a quick moment... The owner greeted me and almost immediately started talking prices. This is $20 dollars and we have that for $25 dollars, but this is a little more expensive, and that's this price. Oh, that fascinator is beautiful on you and you can put it layaway. It was just $79 dollars, mind you. Excuse me? It's such a turn-off when people see brown skin and assume that the purchase would be unaffordable without a payment plan! Not to mention, I started off by noting that I was only taking a quick peek on my way to pick up my Nordstrom purchase. Though I promptly told her that I don't need layaway and I pay for things outright, I had already decided that I wouldn't be buying from there. Her fixation on talking to me about price was all I needed to hear. Nothing disgusts me more than when people make assumptions! I have beautiful vintage hats in my collection, fine jewelry and quality costume jewelry, and beautiful bags that I've purchased abroad. She could've had a repeat customer who prioritizes quality goods and, more importantly, quality service.
