The airport is conveniently located in Bowie and has been around for at least 50 years as I remember going there on a field trip when I was in elementary school. I read reviews on Google prior to switching from another flight school since it was so convenient. BIG mistake. Most reviews were from many years ago and were pretty good. That is no longer the case. My daughter spent 7 months there working on obtaining her PPL. I went and expressed we needed to be done a few months later and started flying more to be able to be complete. Two months later when I called the instructor multiple times to see when she could take the FAA exam I got no response. I sent notes with my child and still had no response. When I took her log book back to where we started, I found out that she basically didn't progress at all, had not had any instruction in basic areas needed for PPL, and had no solo time although she had completed a solo prior to starting there. She logged in over 60 hours of flight time over the 40 she already had. A complete waste of thousands of dollars! read more

I had never been in a small plane when I took my first Introductory flight at Freeway. I was lucky enough to fly with Marty, and from there decided that this was going to be my new career. I have been working towards my Commercial Pilot License ever since. I was able to fly 2-3 times a week with Marty and was elated when I was able fly my first solo, then cross country, and was eventually able to pass my private pilot license with just over the minimum hours. I did a lot of self study; however, Freeway is such an open environment for students with questions, I do not think I would have had the same success otherwise. Any time I had a question about something, or didn't understand, Marty, Joel, or any of the instructors were more than happy to help answer my question without talking down to me, esp being one of the few girls in entering the industry. I cannot speak more highly of this learning environment, knowledge of the instructors, and general awesomeness of Freeway. read more

I bought a deal off of Travel Zoo for an introductory flight lesson. I really thought it would involve much more but it was pretty disappointing. The good: Friendly staff Good condition planes Easy to make a reservation Seeing a cockpit The bad: No pre-training instruction prior to getting in the plane During the flying, we got to touch the steering wheel and were able to do one minor turn. This was only after the person with me asked our instructor. It would have been nice to have been able to do more turns, try to control the tail wind, and fly higher or lower. read more

I finally redeemed my AAA deal and was disappointed! Instructor Vincent was a complete disappointment. My appt was at 11 and didn't get to the plane until 11:25. Took almost 10 mintues to get off the ground and was back by 12.WTH! The guy barely made any conversation related to flying, did all the tricks himself, no "introductary" course... waste of time and money. Deal from AAA was for 40min lesson and 60 flying.. all I got was 20min of blech! Only pro was some guy (maybe the owner?) saw us waiting and found out how much of a disappointment this place and whole experience was- he offered a free lesson.. i declined it coz didn't want to waste any more time!!! gah! read more

My instructor Curt was awesome. He was a real pro and knew everything about flying & he was very friendly as well. I'd recommend requesting him for sure. Some people in previous posts complained that there was not enough pre-flight instruction. Understand that if you are doing a one-hour introductory flight, if there is too much chatter beforehand, it takes away too much time from actually FLYING. Curt gave me all the details about the plane and how it works beforehand and gave me ample time to do turns, ascend, descend, etc. It was a great hands-on experience. I'd give my instructor 5+++ stars, and the overall facility 4 stars. This lesson was purchased on a Travelzoo voucher at a fraction of what it would normally cost.If it were closer to my house, I'd definitely take additional lessons! read more

Freeway airport has got to be the coolest GA strip in MD. You can't find friendlier or more accommodating people than here. I received my 40hrs of instruction here from various instructors- all who were awesome and brought something else to the table. It's a very challenging airport to learn at due to the airspace it's within, and the very unique traffic pattern and approach. However I think that's one of the main reasons you should learn here...if you can train at one of the most complicated GA airports around, than you can master any others! read more

I took one lesson; it was fun, but I was expecting more. Flying is something I want learn, so I will try Montgomery airport as well.

I bought a friend a 1-hour introductory flight class since learning to fly is on his bucket list. For a little extra, I got to tag along in the back seat of the 1983 Cessna 172. The experience was wonderful! The pilot was skilled - he showed us several maneuvers (the quick assent and descent made me SCREAM because the feeling mimicked a free fall and when he turned off the engine, my heart stopped). My friend got to use the yoke and the rudder pedals and left even more intent on learning to fly. The airport is small and the staff is friendly and chatty. A great place to explore flying! read more

I have been at Freeway for the past month in gtting training and instructions. There are very informative and dedicated to people learning to fly. I have scheduled without any incidents only due to mother nature not cooperatin. This is the best place to learn to fly. Only downfall, they don't have veterans or military discounts for the training, UGHhh. The CFIs are very knowledgable and willing to teach you at all cost to get you prepared and up in the air. read more

I did an introductory flight on 15 Sept 2013. The experience was great overall and a good value (I used a TravelZoo voucher that cost $85 for 20 minutes of instruction and 40 minutes of flight time). My flight instructor - John P. - was easy-going and encouraging. Before we took off, John showed me how the pre-flight check is performed. Then he went over the aircraft controls with me. We taxied to the runway, mostly under my control and then I piloted the airplane during takeoff. John showed me how to turn, ascend and descend and I performed all those maneuvers in the air. The instructor has the same controls as the student so he/she can correct any improper inputs by the student. After a half-hour or so in the air we headed back to the airport and John landed the plane. The only minor negative was that the flight before mine returned late so we didn't start until about 15 minutes past my scheduled start time and as a result we flew for a few minutes less than planned. read more

I was an aircraft owner before had my license. I had a pilot flying my plane and I decided to get a license of my own. A friend who took the ground school there 15 years ago in Freeway airport recommended this place for my ground school. Big mistake and waste of my money there. The day I went to register was a young man in his early 20s chewing tobacco and spitting in a plastic bottle while was talking to me about being an instructor and about the ground school. Bad right from the start. I shouldn't go any further but I did. Ground school:The teacher probably knew her subject, an Italian young lady soft spoken and everybody complained that could not hear her. In the classroom wasn't a projector and while she was going through the pilot book nobody seems to be able to follow her. We were taking the evening lessons (winter 2013). One evening in the pilot lounge someone had the tv or music so loud that add more negative points to this place. After finishing the ground course in Freeway I was not happy about the very little knowledge I received from there regardless that I passes their test, so I took and completed a ground school on line with Jeppesen and Kings. When I felt I was ready or take the writing test and I though to will give Freeway airport another chance. Second big mistake. Their computer for testing belong to Smisthonian museum to be place next to the Dinasaurus was old with terrible resolution. The glare from the ceiling light make it difficult to read what was on the screen and I had to turn it on the side. Half way through the test the damn thing reboot because of an antivirus program. I completed the test and pass but the aggravation that I went through plus the horrible ground school I will not recomand this place for ground school or testing facilities for your exam. read more

I am more of a fan of the experience than the lesson. I signed up for the intro flight and my instructor was chosen almost under a game of paper scissors rock. I wanted to be educated from the minute I went inside that Cessna. I didnt get that. It was sort of like the instructor was just going through the motions and only touching on certain elements. I dont know if it was because I am a lone woman rolling up there or what. I am not sure. But I felt it was just way too casual for me to absorb any real understanding of how to initiate a flight. We decided to fly over the water, which was cool until it got choppy. I received very basic education on the horizon and some of the "gears". I might go through another intro flight at another airport. I just feel as if I wasnt taken seriously. read more

I bought an intro flight lesson on Groupon about a year ago and redeemed it today. My instructor, Andy, was great. I was clearly nervous and he was a complete pro. While there wasn't much pre-flight instruction, I learned a lot while in the air. I was able to take the wheel for part of take-off, and then most of the time in-flight. He explained what all the gauges and dials were, and was very calm when I was nervous during some turbulence. I am not sure if I will continue with flight lessons, but if I do, I will take them here. read more

The pedagological philosophy here is from a different age- just shut up and do what I said. Instructor seemed only interested in recording hours so he could get a better job. After every lesson my instructor headed straight in where he resumed his conversation with the desk attendant as if he was afraid to talk to me. Airplanes probably fine under the hood but shabby inside. Altogether, a place to avoid in my opinion and a waste of six hours of my flying time. read more

A big disappointment all around. Our instructor clearly did not want to take us up into the air and was coming up with a million reasons not to fly, despite the fact that I had booked the lesson weeks before (as a wedding gift!) and had called in the morning to confirm that conditions were fine for the lesson. We felt that we were treated with extreme rudeness and disrespect, and the instructor behaved in an incredibly unprofessional manner. We were not given any actual lesson, just a few bits and pieces of completely disjointed information. We were not allowed even to touch the controls. After paying for 2 Travelzoo vouchers, all we ended up with was about a 45 minute tour of the Eastern Shore. We are still so sad and a bit angry that my big surprise gift was ruined by this guy's bad attitude and failure to deliver on what was promised. I see that some people here have gotten lucky with their lessons and others have been disappointed...so, buyer beware! Don't count on being satisfied by Freeway Aviation. read more
