The wasabi and a really nice kick and I just love the flavor profile of the bowl. The avocado is another really good part of this bowl as I think it pairs really well with the salmon and the rice. I feel that the serving size was a little smaller than I expected as I chose the largest option. It didn't seem like that big of a bowl for the price. One thing to note here is the small parking lot next to the building. It's just part of the deal with going to a place in the River Market. I didn't get greeted, my questions weren't answered, and she had a weird attitude with me. This place is legit! I wasn't expecting to find good poké in the Midwest, so I was pleasantly surprised. I came right as they opened on a Monday, so they weren't busy and I got my bowl very quickly. The space is pretty nice and modern, but I ended up taking my bowl to go. I loved how many toppings you could put onto the bowl, even toppings I would consider to be premium, like Masago, Kimchi, and Seaweed Salad. They also had plenty of sauce options. However, I will say that the quality of the fish wasn't anything special. It didn't taste bad or anything, but not particularly fresh. We came here on a Friday afternoon, it wasn't too busy. The staff was nice and helped explain the options to us. The serving size of the choices are pretty small. At one point we asked for a sauce and it was the very bottom of the bottle so it was like an essence. I thought they were going to add more but that was all they were going to do before we asked for more. A friend of mine loves this place and recommended it. I was confused by the parking late. It says as a customer you can park in uber parking lot but only till 4pm? We came around 345 so I parked in the lower lot and had to pay. Only like a dollar an hour but still kinda ridiculous to me. My friend parked in the parking lot and in the middle of eating, we were asked if we were parked in the lot and if so we should probably move cause they saw "them" looking at it. Doesn't make sense if they are open till 8. The food was decent. I don't know if it's seasoned or not but I couldn't taste it really if it was. It did taste fresh though. In addition to that, because they may have been short-staffed, I found that the tables inside had not been cleaned. It made me question if the level of cleanliness in the food prep area, and that made me uncomfortable. But, let's talk about the food, because at the end of the day, I'll eat in a hole in the wall if the food is exceptional. ...The problem is the food is not exceptional. The portions of each item they give is about the size of a small cookie-dough scoop (smaller than your typical ice-cream scoop). For the prices, I felt a bit unsatisfied. The silver lining is that for the most part, the ingredients seemed fresh. The flavors were predictable, but not bad. Would I go back? It's hard to say. Located at the fun area of downtown where the market street and all the entertainment is present this place has some public meter Parking around. It was not super hard to find parking around there on a Saturday during the lunch time. The place is well decorated and had a fast food vibe to it, however it is far from unhealthy. when we came in we had no problems to find sitting but I can see that it may be a challenge on weekdays during lunch hour rush when most the locals are at work in the area. Here you order at a line and pay at the end, just like a fast food joint. They serve beer and ciders here, I loved that about this place as I enjoyed a pretty nice cider with my Poke. Since it was our first time and we were super lucky to come in at a down time, the staff took their time to explain the food and how the ordering process worked. The staff was amazing and very knowledgeable of the food. They gave us samples of sauces and things that we never tried before so we could make the best choice for your meal. As I had previously eaten a large lunch, I went for the smaller bowl which still gave me leftovers! As far as the food itself goes, the fish (I got both raw salmon and tuna) was fresh, and the marinades flavorful. The seaweed salad is excellent--definitely a can't-miss! Otherwise, most of the toppings and mix-ins were fairly standard. This is all on top of a filling base of rice, to make for a solid and filling meal. Overall, Freestyle Poke is pretty darn good. It's missing that "WOW!" factor present for many of my 5-star reviews, but I definitely enjoyed it and will likely return eventually. The first time I had their Nirvana and Why so Serious Good Bowl, I feel in love with the freshness and unique poke bowl. I enjoyed it so much I keep coming back for more. I do like their signatures bowls, but as a free-spirited person I like varieties like their different flavors and textures more. I always go for their best freestyle bowls which you can custom to your liking. They way they serve their delicious food is like how you would order at Subway or Chipotle... but with better healthier food. You choose and they do it for you. You pick your base, protein, mix in, marinade it, toppings, and last sauce it. It comes out so nice and full. I could seriously eat this everyday. So tasty and goes well with my diet and after a good exercise workout. They do have Kombucha here and other tasty drinks sold here too. As well Beer, Wine and Sake. Parking can be a challenge but that's okay, I don't mind walking and the ambiance around River Market is nice not to enjoy. Freestyle Poké is Just a block south of the free KCStreetcar River Market West station and about 2 blocks west of the main City Market station. I live downtown so I took the Streetcar once, walked once and rode with a friend who was driving last time. DO NOT park in the lot just north of Freestyle Poké as it is marked for residents Only and the lot owners will tow you. Look for signs denoting street parking and there are community lots near the stations. Freestyle Poké is open until 10 pm every night which is very convenient. I wasn't prepared for the No Cash policy on my first visit but there are signs on the door now to notify people , but they do take credit and debit and there is an ATM conveniently in the City Market. I love the freshness of the food and the staff has been exceptionally helpful (there are A Lot of choices!) and sincerely nice each time. You choose one of 2 bowl sizes and can create your own bowl or build off of a Signature Bowl. I took a Signature Nirvana Bowl with ahi, edamame, sriracha ponzu, mango and cucumber and added raw salmon (they also have cooked salmon) over Forbidden rice+quinoa topped with wasabi tobiko and wasabi toasted coconut ! They have house brewed kombucha which is great! ! They also have local beers, wine choices, teas and a few other beverage choices. The patio was shaded around 6 pm when we went so it was really comfortable. I wish I lived in KC just so I could eat here all the time!! My husband and I planned our morning around coming here. We arrived when they opened at 11. Something I'll note before jumping in too far into the review, parking isn't great at the river market area. Especially on a Saturday. We got super lucky and parked behind the building in the free lot. Anyway, we were the first customers of the day, and everyone greeted us like they were so stoked we were there. It was welcoming. The first person to help us asked if we had been in before and helped us figure out where to start: size of bowl and base (rice, quinoa, zucchini noodles, etc.) I got the zucchini noodles and then at the last minute decided to go with a signature bowl called Ride the Wave. It's got raw salmon, sweet potato, avocado and spring onion. I also added truffle yuzu ponzu, spicy cashews, crispy shallots, sprouts, beets, and wasabi mayo. It was absolutely incredible. I got the "best" size which is the large. It was the perfect amount of food. If I got rice, I probably would get the "good" size which is the smaller. I think it'd be plenty for a meal! My husband also got the best size with chicken, avocado, tomato, jalapeño, sriracha ponzu, wasabi mayo, and a few others. He loved his. He's not as much of a sushi lover as me, but I told him he has to get the raw fish next time. It wasn't busy when we were eating, but I know they get ridiculously busy at this restaurant. I recommend going when they open if possible. It's a little quieter and not really a wait (at least today). We come to KC several times a year and this is a place we will continue to come. I am so impressed with the service we received. Every person was so friendly and helpful. What a fantastic place down by the River Market. I am currently eating Paleo due to some food allergies and this place makes it easy. Everything on the menu is Gluten Free and Dairy Free. I didn't worry too much about the sugar content of the sauces. I have never had poke before and I am not a fan of seafood so I was skeptical. I shouldn't have been. I had a Freestyle bowl with a zucchini noodle base, chicken, avocado, mango, jalapeno, and sweet potatoes. I wasn't sure about the marinade but the nice man helping us talked me into a pineapple tumeric and sriracha ponzu combo. It was the perfect combination of sweet and heat. On to the toppings - spicy cashews, crispy garlic, and crispy shallots added the perfect crunch while the marinated kale added additional flavor. Love the environment, the service, the concept. Although I wish the portion size was a little bigger for what you pay for. I paid $14-15 for the biggest bowl but I still felt hungry afterwards. (For reference I'm a 4'11 petite girl) I'm not sure if the bowl size made much of a difference because it looked so tiny. The ingredients did taste very fresh. All the vegetables were crunchy and flavorful. They did have some unique toppings and sauces that I've never heard of. Great for a vegan and gluten free diet. I think the only thing not gluten free except for beer! I love the integrity of the company. They have fresh fish delivered regularly and never freeze it. And many other things (it's listed on the pamphlet if you need to know). This restaurant does appeal to a certain demographic like "upscale, young, healthy, vegan) so if your expecting Chipotle bowl then I'd say turn away. But if you're looking for a light bite before heading elsewhere I'd say go for it. Also a downer...they don't accept cash. For some people this would make total sense but if you're in the City Market area expect customers going to the market to carry cash. Just my two cents. Freestyle Poke is under new management and thank god for that. I came here for their grand re-opening a couple weeks back, and everything was so much better. The menu has more or less remained the same, despite the change in ownership. However the new owners did lower the prices to make it more affordable and worth it. For one small female, a regular bowl offered a good amount of food. I ordered the "Why So Serious?" Bowl, which was extremely flavorful and delicious. It can be hard to find good poke/seafood in the Midwest but the fish at Freestyle Poke is pretty fresh, given that it prob had to be shipped all the way to the Midwest from the coasts. If I'm ever craving Poke while I'm in Kansas City, Freestyle Poké is definitely a place that I will be returning to in the future. read more

I LOVE POKE!!!! So I was so excited to see that there was a Poke place in KC. My husband and I orders the medium sized make your own bowls. The workers are extremely helpful and let you try literally anything you want. It was really cool! It was $30 for the two of us so kind of pricey compared to what I'm used to (In Southern California its cheaper). But it was worth the splurge to get my favorite food. I would recommend coming here to anyone. They ever have other proteins that aren't fish, which I thought was really cool. This is a "cashless" spot, meaning they only take cards.
