If anybody from the DC metro area is wondering, I'd say this place is definitely worth the hour+ drive for any first timers that want to actually learn proper technique. This place specializes in educating newbies! My boyfriend decided he wanted to shoot some shit for his birthday. And what was most difficult as a novice was finding the right place to do that. Even after searching website after website and review after review, I had no real sense of how much I was going to spend and why. Or how long we'd be there. Pretty much I knew absolutely nothing! But Freestate had the best reviews so we took a chance. And we soon found out how worth it coming here was. We arrived at Freestate at about 5 pm on a Saturday. After nervously walking up to the counter, our helper, Ned, enthusiastically embraced us and guided us through the world of guns. After signing a waiver that says they aren't responsible if you get shot, Ned started us off with a 20 minute training course. The course emphasizes safety and gun terms and basics. Then he followed us into the range and assisted for the first 20 minutes to make sure we understood everything we learned. The first gun we shot was a 9mm. He explained that this wasn't the best starter gun but the other .22s were rented for the moment. And let me just tell you I was so glad Ned taught us how to shoot that glock. Because the actual handling and aiming of that 9mm was a lot harder than it looked. We thought we were gonna come in there and rent out huge guns. Oh NO! And I can't imagine the frustration (and the danger) of coming in for the first time and having no idea what to do. But Ned stood right there by our sides eager to answer questions. He even checked back in once we got the hang of things. Knowing how to shoot made everything more fun for the two of us as we spiced things up with a little competition to challenge ourselves. Without Ned's help I'm certain I would've hit everything but the paper and wondered why. So, what exactly are you paying for? I spent $99 for 2 people on a lane, 2 guns, 2 different boxes of ammo, 3 targets, 2 sets of safety equipment, 2 hrs of shooting, plus the training class! Here's a couple things I wish I knew money wise before I came. 2 people on a lane can easily share 1 gun and 1 box of ammo. It's a lot harder to shoot 50 rounds by yourself than it sounds. Ammo changes with the caliber of the gun. So if one person wants to shoot a glock & the other a .22, plan on purchasing 2 separate things of ammo. But 2 different glocks can use the same box. The larger the caliber the gun, the more expensive the ammo for that gun. For ease as novices, choose a first gun you both can handle and then branch out from there. When in a group, the training class is $15 for the lot of you not per individual. My advice? Make the investment and spend the money here the first time because you'll feel like you can pretty much shoot anywhere and know what you're doing after this. Overall excellent, knowledgeable staffers. Necessary & comforting safety precautions. Solid selection of rental guns. Nice facilities. Fair prices on everything. Good for groups. Good for children. FreeState Gun Range just lost two stars. I drive nearly an hour to get to this range and I always double check the website for closures etc. before making the trip. I did the same today and there was nothing of note on the website. So I made the hour trip, on one of my few and far between days off. Only to be told that there were no lanes available (15min. After opening) B/c some security guard group reserved all the lanes until 1230. I was a bit astounded, and even mentioned the long drive and how this probably should have been posted on the website. The response? A shrug and a sucks for you attitude and told to come back in a couple hours. My plan today was to shoot for a couple of hours and buy a yearly membership. FreeState Gun Range definitely lost today's business and probably lost any future business. read more

The best range I've been to in the area. There seems to have been a lot of thought that went into the overall "flow" of this range. It's not as "stiff" as some of the other ranges in the area with the perspective that they want you to feel welcome. Of course safety is a priority but the staff that I've dealt with are more then helpful. I've been about 6 or 7 times now since they opened and love it. It's kept clean, its well lit, modern target send/pull systems with digital controls, and a pretty good selection of firearms if your on the market for a purchase. Not impressed. We rented a H&K that was having issues staying in the cocked position. Not feeling comfortable firing a questionable gun, we exchanged it with a revolver. Come to find they gave us the wrong ammo and didn't have any more of the correct ammo. We didn't feel comfortable with the first gun, and couldn't fire the second at all. A customer-service oreintated company would at least compensate for the rental and part of the range time, but they acted as if they did us a favor by only charging us for one rental. Overall impression: we didn't feel so welcome. If you're not a regular, don't bother. read more

Politics aside, I think just about everyone ought to shoot a firearm at some point in their lives. It is a skill, like driving a car or hammering a nail, that is useful to be familiar with. Shooting can, perhaps, even lift the veil for some on the fact that shooting can actually be a safe, fun experience in the company of responsible and friendly people. Freestate is the gun range, shop, and school offering the kind of positive environment through which any person can become familiar with guns in a fun and upbeat way. There is no chest-beating, confederate flag-waving, nor any other ignorant stereotypes which usually accompany the thoughts of one unfamiliar with the sport. Just a clean, friendly, fun environment with people happy and willing to answer even the simplest of questions. It is obvious that many in the region have also taken a liking to this range, because it is jam-packed on weekends-- a testament to their professionalism and welcoming atmosphere. For the veteran shooters, their range fees are reasonable, wait times usually aren't very long, and best of all, you can bring your own ammo! Range rules and restrictions apply. As a new shooter I went there twice & honestly didn't care what it cost because I was eager to start getting some "more" experience. I never shot at a range before. MY COSTS INCLUDED: FIRST TIME: Renting 9mm Glock 17 & Glock 19, G4's Renting 4 boxes FMJ ammo (200 rds) Renting 1 Target sheet Range Time: About 1 hour and a half Cost me about $80-$89 & I shot 200 rounds (4 boxes), so sounds like Ammo is $20/box of 9mm FMJ. I wanted to rent Glock 19 Gen5 but no Gen5 & 19-G4 was out so I rented a Glock 17 G4 for 100 rounds then Glock 19 G4 for another 100. SECOND TIME: Renting 9mm Glock 19 G4 & S&W M&P 9mm Renting 2 boxes FMJ ammo (100 rds) Renting 1 Target sheet Range Time: less than 1hour, in a bit of a hurry or would have stayed longer. Also cost me about $80-$89 for about an hour but I only shot 100 rounds (2 boxes 9mm FMJ). I rented Glock 19 G4 for 50 rounds then a S&W M&P 50. I'm not sure if I was undercharged FIRST time or overcharged SECOND time. Just was thinking about my shooting and not cost. My fault. I will pay more attention now that I'm more comfortable. I'd like to get a lot of time in (it was fun) but $85 a pop is too high to be a frequent client. I'm planning to buy a Glock 19 G5 after I get the HQL (which I will take at FS gun range for convenience). 4 stars instead of 5 bc of cost. Although I grew up in Maryland, this time I came to visit my family was my first time shooting. And I am hooked. My hands have been itching for a gun the last three days. The location was a bit confusing as the town is a newly developed area, located in a mini strip mall-ish plaza and surrounded by woods, Freestate offers a wide variety of guns for sale, handguns and rifles, as well as accessories. Now for the shooting , I was a first timer so I had to take a mandatory lesson 15$ for 15 minutes. The instructor was hilarious and taught me how to hold, load and shoot as well as the importance of stance and how to aim. After that I was ready to go. My gun of choice was a .22 and yes I kno I either need to gain some weight or start lifting weights but after there rounds my arms were getting sore and that was the lightest gun they had. They have an array of targets you choose from , each $1 from a brawny ICE to zombies and even a hostage situation. I chose the pink one because it was pink. Put on some goggles and ear things that pilots wear and walk through two doors to shoot. There was about 4 other people in there, all men... But one was extremely friendly and offered me To shoot one of his guns。 He then told my friend to watch out because women are better shooters than men and his wife was a better shooter than him haha. I did pretty good for my First time . Be careful when the hot shells fly at you some flew down my shirt and sometimes the gunpowder smell was overwhelming but I stopped noticing it. I was floored by how good the customer service is here. They are the gold standard for customer care. From the second you walk in their are friendly. They are legitimately happy to have you there. The staff is knowledgeable about firearms and happy to assist with your shopping, but without being pushy and trying to get you to spend more than you need to. It's just a good honest shop. The range is great. It is modern and clean. The target carriers are fancy electronic set ups that let you dial in to a specific distance within 18 inches. You want to shoot at 7 yards? Just put 7 into the carrier system and boom...7 yards. 25 yards? Just as easy. I live almost right next to another range in Timonium that shall remain nameless. Free State Gun Range was WELL worth a 22 minute drive instead of the range across the street that is full of holier than thou pushy jerks who know less about firearms than your average garden slug. First I would like to say I really had a great experience my first time there. I was feeling the place out to see if I wanted to get a membership because I recently purchased a weapon. Being a veteran I am fully aware of range protocols now they may differ here and there but for the most part they are all pretty much the same. Keep weapon on safe and down range. Now this particular range only wanted you to pack and unpack weapons at the lane and that's ok to. So as I was packing up one of the range guys told me about the protocol and I said ok. Cool not a problem, I didn't know because it wasn't explained to before I stepped on the range. But like I said not a problem I fully understand safety comes first. No more than 30 seconds after the first guy told me a second person came up to me to tell me the samething. So I said ok no big issue and apologized again. Once again I'm the one apologizing for what I wasn't told. Then soon as I step off the range into the retail store the OWNER decides to walk up to me and again tell me the same shit. But this time buddy says he seen it on video. Keep in mind he is talking about me walking from the shooting lane with weapons barrel to the floor. Then he has to see the other 2 employees walk over to me but he still decides that he needs to confront me for some fucking reason. So when he approaches me he tells me the same shit and when I told him his other 2 employees just explained that to me he decided to continue so I could hear a 3rd time that the weapons are to be unloaded at the lane. Now knowing damn well I was talked to by 2 people he employed he knows damn well our whole interaction was completely unnecessary. All he had to say was, "my guys already took care of it, great. Thank you for coming by I hope you enjoyed your time with us. I just want to make sure we have a safe facility." That would have been ok but when he decided to be redundant and condescending that was it. I gotta pull my money. Great staff, shitty owner. read more

The staff is quite friendly and eager to assist you if needed. They know what they are talking about without the pompous attitude that sometimes comes with people that work at the gun stores. I haven't been to the range at a super busy time, but my wait time was either non-existent or a couple of minutes. One nuisance, but makes it a more smooth operation, is using the iPads to sign in. If they keep the screens clean so that they are responsive this problem goes away. The selection of firearms, ammo, and accessories is quite high. There is no shortage it seems and it is nice to just look at what they have in stock. However, with this being said, the price of what they have in stock is on the higher end. I can usually find ammo and firearms cheaper online or other locations. The prices for there classes is also, on average, $15 more than other ranges near me. The prices for range time and membership is nice and very reasonable. Overall I would recommend this range to anyone that wants to have a good time at the range. read more

Disappointed with management. I have visited this business several times when shopping for weapons and was generally satisfied with my encounters with staff. Yesterday afternoon, went quite differently. While trying to call earlier in the afternoon to check on lane availability, I called four times in 30 minutes, got their message to leave a message, but the message queue was full. My son was home from college and wanted to go to the range. As a CCP holder and gun enthusiast, I was pleased he wanted to go. When we get there, we were told there is a 90 minute wait for a lane. Disappointed to find this out since no one would pick up the phone ahead of time. So, we put in our name for the waitlist. My son wanted to grab a bite to eat, so we left until our lane was open. About 20 minutes later, I got a call from California that said we are ready for you or something like that (no name of establishment). We got back to the range at 50 minutes after first visiting and went to retrieve our reservation. The attendant said that we were removed from list 9 minutes after we got our call. Mind you, there is no waiting are with chairs. They were completely disinterested in my asking for the next lane and said that I had to start the process all over again. Terrible customer service. I won't return and will alert my fellow shooting enthusiast friends to spend their time and money elsewhere. I feel they wasted my evening outing with my son. read more

The first time I went to Freestate, I had the luck of being helped by an older gentleman named John who just so happened to be an NRA pistol instructor. He took some time out to get me settled into the range, and also gave me an impromptu lesson when I indicated that I was still a novice in the shooting sports world. This obviously made a lasting impression on me, and solidified the fact that Freestate would be earning my business in the future. To this day, I've not been disappointed with the friendly service that I've received. The environment is clean and nicely laid out, making it easy to browse their inventory. They have been quite busy lately on the weekends, but that should be a testament to how well they run their business. The 12 lane range can get crowded on weekends, but usually this isn't a problem. This last weekend, I had an couple in the lane to the left of mine who would hit my target from time to time as the guy was showing his significant other how to shoot, and the stray brass bouncing into my face. Experiences like this don't sour me on the range itself, which is properly cooled, lit, and ventilated. One of the only things that I wish was better is having a proper staging area to get ready to shoot. The shelving units behind the lanes just doesn't cut it for me sometimes. All in all though, I highly recommend giving your business to Freestate if you are in the Baltimore area. read more

I've been to a couple different ranges and this is by far my favorite. I really like the cleanliness and layout of this range compared to others. My favorite part is the staff doesn't treat you like you're stupid like I've experienced at a lot of other ranges. In fact it's the opposite. I came here to get my red dot sighted in which I think costs about $30. While me and the employee were at the lane, there was some trouble with the line so they moved me over to a different lane. I then moved lanes once again and when I went to check out they didn't charge me for zeroing in my red dot due to the lane change inconvenience. I also bought a Glock from them and when I bought it they told me if I wanted to shoot it during the 7 day wait period, I could which was really cool! I usually buy my guns from worth a shot and have to wait a week before taking it to the range but being able to shoot it and leave it there was really cool. All in all, this range and all the employees here are awesome. The only one negative I can think of is if you're a new shooter there, or after every year, you have to fill out a waiver that asks some pretty intrusive questions. It's the only reason my family doesn't like going with me. But in their defense, I think it's because they're in Baltimore county and that's the law. But overall, really nice place, really cool people. read more

I'm a tourist currently visiting from New Zealand. Being cleared to shoot here was easy, a passport is all you need. The range is comparable to a buffet restaurant. A friendly waiter of death (WOD) directs you to a glass cabinet containing lead dispensers in doses from .22 to .50 Magnum. Because I'm not compensating for anything, I chose a Ruger .22 target pistol. It was nice to send a lot of lead down range without worrying about cost. This was presumably why the .40 owner in the next booth was missing at 7 yards, it can't be easy aiming a gun while looking through your wallet. After taking some good advice from the WOD, I was able to get a group of about 2 inches at 25 yards. I'm told this is pretty good for a first time shooter. If I had any suggestions, it would be to include a free watermelon with any .50 revolver hire. Other than that, an awesome place to visit, keep up the good work! read more

i would hate to be the first to give 4 stars...so what they hey! this place is close enough to a 5-star. First off, whoever I spoke to on the phone before I went was very helpful in helping me understand the price structure. I passed out in the car but i heard this place was hard to find...beware! Also when you walk in, you might wonder "so.....where's the gun range? it just looks like a shop!" the range is in the back. When we arrived, Adam was great to greet us and help us with everything as soon as we mentioned we're newbies. He explained which gun he recommended for new learners, explained words I didn't understand on the forms, and exactly how pricing worked. We also signed up for a training session which lasted just a quick 20 minutes. He explained the very basics of gun safety, how to hold a gun, how to aim, how to release your magazine and how to cock your gun. We practiced holding the gun and aiming in the training room but you don't get to practice anything else until you go into the actual range. Makes sense So here is how pricing worked: Training session: $15 for the group if you are going with a group, not per individual as I originally thought. Lanes: $18 for a lane, additional $10 for an extra person to share to that lane Gun rentals: $10 for each gun you rent. Ammunition: $9-$15ish - really depends on the type of gun you have Targets: about $1 each - you're going to end up buying a lot of these! Goggles and headphones are available - don't remember how much they were. Ear plugs: $1 (just bring your own) We had 6 people - with two people sharing each lane, we shot for about 2 hours and went through many boxes of ammunition. Total came out to be around $50 per person after splitting the costs evenly. We had a slight military discount but it was minor. I definitely recommend going with a couple of people your fist time so you can switch lanes and try each other's guns. The staff on duty in the range was helpful to come around to assist you if you needed help. One guy tried helping me with my aim, though his advice didn't really work... I appreciate his effort. I would like to start my review off by saying this is my first time here. from the moment I stepped in the door it was horrible. I understand there is a 45 to 50 min wait but don't talk to me like I'm an idiot. My issue was that I wasn't understanding if we were in line... or if we were waiting 45 mins and if people leave than people leave... if they don't and we end up waiting till 830 we wouldn't have time to shoot. The guy behind the counter looked at me stupid when I said I didn't understand this was my first time here. Anyway. The staff wasn't very helpful, there were lots of people waiting for assistance. There was no order of lines people who were waiting for a couple mins were being helped after people who had just walked in the door. The range officer dude who was walking around wasn't very nice either. We needed 3 lanes and 2 were open. Well the boy, I don't use that lightly... he looked like he was at most 24, told us we had to "tag team" (exact words). Then the range officer butted in and said nope we can't hold 2 lanes just because you need another one. Umm okay... it's not like we were all 20 year old kids. The ages ranges from 2 27 year Olds, 1 60 year old, and 2 35 year olds. And the whole hour we were waiting we were quiet and calm. Not loud and roudy. There was no reason why a lane couldn't have 3 of us till another lane became available. ( keep reading... I understand there is only 2 to a lane but they didn't follow their own rules.) My husband looked at the guy and said well will you let us know when the 3rd lane becomes available? And he's like umm yeah uhhh I guess if you want it...(hello we came as a group.... it's no fun for 1 person to sit in the waiting room and switching for other people in the group to be able to target practice.) So magically a 3rd booth came available. We were in there for about an hour. 35 mins into us being in the range a group of 3 men come in and are in between 2 of our lanes. (Oh okay.. so we couldn't have 3 people at a lane but these 3 guys could?) The lanes here have open tops and every time the guy next to me would let off 8 to 10 rounds one after the other his casings would come over and hit me in the head and face. Horst and McCann in belair has complete boxes around the lane so our have no distractions. The manager needs to take a management class on how to run a gun range. Horst and McCann is okay but if I had to choose between the two I would go for horst. Needless to say this was the first and last time I will come here. To add to the frustration of customer service... we had driven down there from PA to try this range out to see if it was better than Horst and McCann... well it's not LOL. read more

I had an amazing time it was my very first time shooting a gun period! And I must say I really enjoyed it. It takes very long getting the hang of it my friend and I had to keep asking for bro but once you get the hang of it it's a piece of cake. What I didn't like was how close the lanes were because other shooters bullets were flying over into my lane which was a little scary for me. It's best to wear a shirt that givers you up because one of the billets flew into my shirt and it was very hot so it burned me. The employees were very helpful and it can get very crowded fast So it's best to go early. They also give you a 15 minute class before you shoot to learn the basics of course (this is only for beginners). Some Pepe had their children with them which I didn't find appropriate but I guess it depends where you're from, personally I would never bring a child with me there. It seems like success has been the undoing of this range because it's just terrible now. I shoot once or twice a month (I travel a lot for work) and for the last 6 months Freestate has been going downhill steadily. 1. The place has become inherently unsafe because they'll let anybody shoot regardless of experience and then they don't watch them on the range. The last third of the ceiling looks like swiss cheese and they've not even been open a year. At Freestate, I've had loaded guns pointed at me (accidentally), had my target hit by shooters in other lanes, and have seen numerous negligent discharges. 2. If the employees are on the range, it's only because there is also an attractive female out there. My girlfriend quit going there because she said that several of the creepy/stalky employees wouldn't leave her alone on the range. 3. The prices have become very high for range rental ($18/hour), ammo, and classes. They used to have good gun prices, but they've jacked them up, too. I definitely wouldn't buy a gun there, there are much cheaper stores less than 5 miles away. read more

Freestate gun range is excellent! Took my HQL class there, as well as visited the range a handful of times. Staff has always been professional and friendly, with a focus on safety and education. This isn't one of those places that makes newbies feel uncomfortable and inferior, instead they welcome new shooters and get them excited about it. The only reason they didn't get 5 stars is because their prices are pretty high, but I get it, MD isn't exactly a firearm friendly state. I recommend going here for training and to shoot, but you should probably shop around before buying a gun here. read more

After our first time at Freestate, my boyfriend and I became addicted to shooting guns. Now it's one of our favorite hobbies. Truthfully, I was very nervous because it was the first time I had ever shot a gun and I felt intimidated because I'm a small weak girl and thought that when I walked through the door, everyone would just laugh me out of there. Instead, I was given a tutorial on how to hold a gun and aim. Shooting is exhilarating and after that first time, my boyfriend and I were hooked! Since then, we have been back a few times and have even brought friends. You pay for the lane and they charge you depending on how long you shoot. You can also rent a gun and then you have to purchase ammo from them. The lanes are separated by dividers but it almost feels like everyone is just standing in a giant concrete box because it is LOUD in there. It's also freezing in the winter because of the way they've set up the ventilation so be sure to bring a jacket. They have a wide selection of firearms for sell and they also do events and classes. I was curious about some of the guns in the case and they were more than happy to take them out and let me hold them. I have always defended Freestate when others have talked bad about it until now. I Purchased a regulated firearm on the 6th of Nov and went to pick it up on the 14th which is the 9th day. They told me to come back on Monday the 16th because Sunday and Veteran's day do not count. I have purchased multiple regulated firearms and this is the first place that only counts business days. Also on the 14th I walk in with 1,500 cash to build my first AR and got no help even after asking. After only buying a dust cover a guy says "that's it". Telling him I got no help he said "oh" "Sorry". Went to Gun connection right after and was given 100% of their attention with extreme knowledge of every gun. Also saved a couple hundred dollars because Gun Connections prices are lower. Freestate is could for one thing only and that's their Gun Range. They need to hire Vets with knowledge of their guns. An example, an employee went to so me his AR it was in a duffle bag with other guns/parts. Really if you don't respect your weapons how can I take your word. Also if you plan to go on a weekend be prepared to wait a long time to shoot. Hey Sam C. I normally go during the week and I always call a day ahead to see if there is a class/group using the range. I always bring my own guns and ammo because ammo is cheaper online than at the range. Just make sure you do not buy steel case ammunition. I bring my own safety gear so all I pay for is the lane and targets. I have never had a problem with the staff. They are respectful and informative. I was a member for 2 years but I don't use the membership enough to justify the cost. The free gun cleanings with the membership did save me time and trouble cleaning at home. But hey, if you can't disassemble/reassemble it maybe you should not have it. Uncle Sam got that part right. There is simply not enough great things I can say about Freestate. They have always been extremely friendly and welcoming to everyone I've ever sent there or brought there. They are ardent supporters of the shooting sports and our youth shooting program. They are simply awesome. Best range ive been too. Safe and really great staff. Plenty of lanes, ive never had to wait for a lane. Its kind of tucked away and hard to find but worth the drive. Staff is really helpful and not dicks like most places. Classes were really helpful and instructors are passionate about what they teach. I feel very comfortable here. read more

Just moved here from a more gun friendly state and was glad to stumble upon this place. Great facility and friendly staff. I went on a rainy Saturday and it was very busy but I assume it's not always that crowded. The staff was upfront I the wait time which was appreciated and allowed me time to check out their gear. I'd recommend this as a go to shooting range and will be back. Likely look into a yearly membership if they offer it. read more
