I really wanted to love this place. It's close to our new house, rave reviews and offers a gluten free bun. The place was packed on Sunday evening but we were seated right away. Hostesses were polite and the place is huge with TVs everywhere, not huge but a lot of them. Hubs had the chicken fried steak as recommended by our waitress, he ordered medium. I was craving a burger and ordered the bacon chili cheese burger gluten free. First, absolutely was gluten free, the kitchen is taking precautions. However; despite being asked how I wanted it cooked it came out just like my husband's, cremated. I have no idea what it would've tasted liked because all I got was greasy and crispy charcoal. Friend and his family invited me out for a meal, and this is the place that was chosen. Years ago, I ate at the one on Bluebonnet Circle. I sadly no longer get to Fred's nearly as frequently as I used to now that it's in west FTW as I live up in North Richland Hills. Back in the day my world revolved around Backwoods for fly fishing supplies, Fort Worth Camera for camera gear and Freds... all within blocks of one another. I always found myself close to Fred's around noon. I was not initially impressed with the new store as it was not, well, Fred's if you know what I mean. On Curry street I always sat inside at the bar or by the bar in a booth, never out in the Fort as inside has always been Fred's to me. I guess it often just takes time for change to become comfortable. I'm relatively comfortable now in the new store if sitting at the bar or close to the bar on the patio side. The one major constant that makes me most comfortable in the new store is the presence of the great Brian Naehritz at the bar. And, well, the food ... and, of course, the Cold Ass Beer, LOL. All my old favs are still on the menu and just as good as before and maybe even better. And new, very appealing items have been added to the menu. The kitchen's game here appears to have been notably elevated. The Diablo burger today was spectacular. I cannot recall if this was an option back in the day but for three bucks you can substitute onion rings for fries. The onion rings are world class and just the right proportion to accompany a burger. I'm so happy for the team here that this location is obviously working out so well for them. Dropped in on a weekend for a late lunch, a great decision! Service was excellent! The hosts, waitress (Emmy), & the servers who also brought our food would were all so pleasant & friendly. Fried Green Tomatoes - definite yet, thick tomatoes slices with pimento cheese that took it up a level! HH Burger with loaded fries - the egg was perfectly cooked, burger was juicy, & the loaded fries were plentiful with toppings. Finally made it out but not for a burger. We came for a drink. Big variety of beers. We tried their margaritas and they were good and did the job. As I sit here at the bar of Fred's Texas Cafe in Fort Worth, Texas, awaiting my Apple crisp a la mode, I realize I haven't left a review in quite sometime. I won't waste any time writing about anything less than magical...and choke my chicken, I just had a top 5 all time burger. I like my burgers pink in the middle (death to the smashburger sandwich! Yeah, it's not a burger.) and I like mine with a good amount of heat to them. More so than your standard jalapeno burger (only bc jalapeños now taste like bell peppers, wtf???)....well then partner, RUN and get you a Serrano Burger at Fred's. Bread is 37% of the burger. I freaking hate it when burger joints forget this and the breads sucks....not so at Uncle Fred's. REALLY good quality bread. I call him uncle now bc this place has entered my, "The Byrnes Family Circle of trust"...that's how good this burger is. The Whistle Stop Burger here ranks in the top five of best burgers I've ever had. Authentic and delicious, this Southern burger with pimento cheese and a fried green tomato is unique and mouthwatering. The Texas Blond beer on tap is cold and refreshing and light. My hubby and I stopped in here at 9:45 at night after a two-hour sunset trail horseback ride over rugged terrain that ran long. I was pretty beat up and tired and needed some meat. This place has been busy since it opened. I decided to come here for my Birthday. So, thankful for my Dad that treated me for dinner. It was a humble atmosphere with humble food and good service. Upon walking in the tunes of Stevie Nicks played. There was another couple in the dining room and the Bar and Patio seemed busy. Fred's was having a promo, buy a bike donate it, and get a free Burger and Fries. That's what you call a right said Fred. Lol. I ordered a Fred Burger for 12.00. It was really hearty, tasty with all the fixings. The Bun was soft and Buttery. The Fries were crispy but, I wasn't a fan. Sweet Tea was not sweet. I think, they gave me unsweetened Tea by mistake. I let our Waitress know and she gave me a Sweet Tea it was much better. Ask for it to go and they will bless you with a Plastic Fred cup. In sum, I had a tasty burger and good service. I had a short lunch and the wait was longer than I expected but it is a cafe and not fast food . I had to go back to work so I asked if they can hold it for me and I would pick it up after work. I accidentally gave a review of Tommy's Hamburgers when I intended to give it to Fred's--too many guy's names! I will repeat my previous review. Fred's was outstanding. They have a very large venue--big enough for our entire family of 12. They have a WIDE variety of hamburgers but being a regular hamburger girl myself they are very tasty. But other family members ordered their specialty burgers & no one complained. However, their onion rings are to die for-- I could get by on having just those for lunch or dinner. They have some kind of breading or coating that is delicious! The service was pleasant & quick. We will return often. read more

We've been coming to Fred's for more than two decades (the W 7th location was one of our favorite haunts in FTW) and no matter the location, we have always enjoyed the great food, fun atmosphere, and exceptional service, so tonight's experience was especially disappointing. We arrived early for dinner on a Monday early evening and sat on the patio -- it wasn't busy at all. Our waitress was very kind but a bit forgetful; we never received the salsa we asked for with our nachos (which were excellent) or the sauces requested with our burgers (also delicious). The real issue was the sudden, blaring pre-game audio that made conversation impossible. When we politely asked if the volume could be turned down just a little, the food server (not our waitress) said she'd check with the manager, but nothing changed. After waiting and asking again, the manager came over and argued that he was "giving his customers what they want," saying, "It's Monday night -- people are here to see football." The thing is, the game didn't even start until 8 p.m. (it was only 5:30), and there were maybe five tables occupied in the large bar area -- hardly a huge crowd there for the game. Plus, the regular music was still blaring underneath the TV audio. We weren't asking to turn it off, just to lower it enough to have a normal conversation. After that, we observed our previously attentive server avoid our table- in spite of tending to the tables around us. No drink refills (we would have loved another margarita and iced tea), no check-ins if our food was good (it was!) and we eventually fetched our own to-go box. When she finally came over, we asked for the check -- without mentioning the lapse in service. Out of the blue, she immediately offered us a free drink or dessert. It felt awkward and unnecessary, as we hadn't complained, just quietly decided to wrap things up. We've been regulars for over 20 years and have never once complained or asked for anything to be comped- it's not our style. The food remains excellent, but the manager's dismissive attitude and the painfully loud environment made for an unpleasant experience. We left feeling genuinely sad that this seems to be the new normal for a place that used to set the standard for great service and hospitality. read more

A very high quality Angus Burger. The Fries were hot and perfect. My Sis had onion rings they were "ok". We literally could not finish em'. Buns toasted perfectly and dressed for success. A must try! Alphabet date led us to Fred's Texas Cafe for the letter "F" and came highly recommended! Very well-known for plenty of good items, especially the burgers, sandwiches and chicken fried steak. Today, we tried: Fried pickles, Smoked Bologna sandwich, The Whistlestop Burger and The Spicy Todo Jalepeno Burger. STJ Burger 4.4/5 - this burger is made with fried jalepenos, bacon, jalepeno cream cheese, and homemade jalepeno jam on a cheddar jalepeno bun. By far my favorite burger of the 2 we tried. This would've been a lot higher rating if it did come with the cheddar bun (mine was regular) and if my beef patty was cooked to my liking (no offer). Still a pretty high rating, and the best part was the jam! Bun was buttered and toasted to perfection. Definitely a must try if you love all things spicy. W Burger 3.7/5 - this burger comes with creamy pimento cheese spread, fried green tomato, fresh pico, Sriracha rémoulade and lettuce. Again, bun perfectly buttered and toasted. Again, rating would've been higher with a medium patty. Overall, the star ingredient was the combination of the rémoulade with the pimento cheese spread. Could use more pop of flavor to bring out every ingredient. SB Sandwich 5/5! - Smoked Bologna seared in Fred's Badlands BBQ sauce, accompanied with bacon, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mayo served on buttery Texas toast. This sandwich was near perfect! The smoke flavor on the Bologna stood out. Every ingredient complimented the next, down to the mayo and crispy, buttery toasted Texas toast. I will be back for this alone! Fried pickles w/spicy ranch 4.7/5 - banger appetizer. The pickles were seasoned (can, clearly see the pepper flecks) and the spicy ranch was a perfect dip.
