If you are grabbing rentals before hitting the slopes, you might as well grab the breakfast buffet here here as well! There are not a lot of other restaurants open in the morning, and although we weren't quite ready for a big meal/buffet, we ended up being pretty happy with this decision! This is a no-frills breakfast buffet with probably about 6 to 8 items as your selection, but it is quite a hearty meal. The eggs are not powdered, and the biscuits and gravy were delicious! The men who were serving everyone were very friendly and moved as quickly as possible although the line was a little bit slow since it was a busy time of the morning. It is a little bit of a pricier buffet given the selection, But for the convenience, it was worth it. read more

Stopped by on my way to the ski mountains my for breakfast and am pleased with the experience! Wonderful customer service, all the workers made me feel like I was a true guest there! Went here for breakfast before making our way back home. The menu wasn't as extensive as it was online but we were okay with that because we weren't looking for anything heavy. I opted for the sausage, egg and cheese biscuit. It took a little while for the food to come out but it was also pretty busy. The sandwich was pretty good, my favorite part was the biscuit. They have a beautiful sunroom you can sit in if you can manage to snag a table out there. Overall the staff was friendly, the food was good and a great quick place to stop for a bite to eat and get some shopping in at their store upstairs. read more

I visited Fred's Backside Deli since I was staying in Birch Mountain and there aren't many places around for breakfast. Overall, their prices are good and the food is just okay, nothing spectacular. I got the South Beach bowl and it was pretty bland. Luckily they have a condiment bar with plenty of ketchup, mustard and hot sauce. Fred's uses Boars Head brand meat so maybe their lunch sandwiches are better than their breakfast options. I will say that I like the relaxed, country vibe in the restaurant and the staff is very pleasant. Overall, 3/5 stars. read more

Good breakfast and barbeque. Friendly staff and affordable. We have been eating here for over 20 years. There is also a mercantile store upstairs with everything you may need in a pinch on the mountain. Prices are good, considering the convenient location. We ate here several times a week for lunch back in 2001 when my family built house on Beech Mountain. Friendly, affordable and tasty lunch. The barbeque at Fred's is much better and affordable than other options on mountain (e.g., WW Lodge / Holy Smokes). White Wolf Lodge/Holy Smokes is pricey with poorer fare and manager Mike will berate/harass customers if staff loses receipts and refuse to admit mistake. Eat at Fred's Backside Deli instead. This hidden gem of a restaurant is in the basement of a general store! It was the morning our trip was coming to an end, so I was a bit sad until we walked in here. The store is adorable and has a little bit of everything! I admired the produce and the trinkets, and then walked down the enclosed stairs to find an open layout with what looked to be a beautiful outside sitting area as well. I didn't go outside because it was cold and rainy. You order at a counter and the choices are pretty simple. I had some disappointing biscuits and gravy the day before, so I wanted to give them a shot. The food came out fast and hot, it was tasty and fresh and well executed. My biscuits were perfect covered in that creamy gravy. Sometimes it doesn't have to be fancy, it just has to be good. There were some local gentlemen sitting here enjoying Sunday breakfast and I could tell this is the kind of place that maybe the older generation comes to slow down and have a good meal. Fred's Deli is a Beech Mountain institution. It's reliably good. I've never had a bad meal there. The atmosphere is casual and the service is helpful and friendly. You order at the counter and they bring the food to your table. After your meal, you can go upstairs to the Mercantile to shop. As Fred says, "If we don't have it, you don't need it." read more

We love Fred's Backside Deli. Breakfast is always delicious and for lunch, their Reuben sandwich is one of the best anywhere!

It's close to where we were staying for the weekend so we decided to hit it for lunch. There's no inside dining during pandemic but there's a small area with outside on the patio where you can wait for your order. There were hardly any customers but it still took 30 minutes for our order to be ready. I think 30 mins is their standard answer to "how long?" It took a little longer than that for the hot food to come out. I don't know why. It's not like they were slammed with orders. Cold sandwiches were faster. There's nothing remarkable about the food. I had a roast beef sandwich, no cheese, and they got it right. You just have to remember to pick up your condiments and napkins at a separate station. It's not automatically included with your box. Location is downstairs from Fred's General Mercantile store. We did some shopping there to kill time while we waited for our order. The deli is close to our vacation place so it was convenient. read more

This place is tucked behind / below Fred's mercantile. You can get there by walking around the backside of the building on the outdoor patio, or walking through the mercantile store and going down the inside stairs. They serve good hot food. For breakfast, southern style biscuits, grits, gravy, eggs, bacon, toast. For lunch, my kids "loved" the grilled cheese sandwich on the kids menu. I had a Rueben which was perfect. Both lunch items came with a side of lays chips. We went upstairs to shop in the mercantile store while we waited for our food (to go) to be ready. Just fyi - They sell coffee there but not fancy cappuccino's / mochas / etc (If you want a local Starbucks type coffee drinks, I recommend First Chair coffee shop for fancy fluffy cappuccino drinks). The ambience is a mix of rustic and eclectic, plenty of skiers around at tables that appear to eat here before going to the slopes. Great place to pop in and sit down or take out. We stopped on our way out home and ordered three bacon, egg, and cheese biscuits to go. The cinnamon roll looked amazing (as did their fresh baked cookies) so we ordered one of those to split too. Service was friendly and fast. The breakfast sandwich was delicious, the biscuit was light and you could taste the butter, but not greasy. While I waited I went upstairs to look at the Mercantile which had varied options between grocery, hardware, and souvenirs. Also fresh baked bread from 4.50 - 6.00 a loaf. Fred's Deli offers an interesting collection of lunch items that will satisfy tourists and locals alike. Eight of us ordered an array of lunch specials. I went with the BLT and a cup of chili. I initially wanted the BBQ sandwich but they were out of BBQ. The kitchen put extra bacon on the sandwich to compensate for the lack of BBQ. They even toasted the bread. It turned out to be an above average BLT. The star of the show is their chili. Without question. Fred's chili is loaded with meat and beans and served very thick. Crush a heaping portion of crackers and you're as happy as a clam. Some of the best chili in recent memory. Service is super polite and friendly, but the line seems to get backed up rather quickly. The dining area with high wood ceilings make for unmatched natural lighting. Definitely worth checking out! read more

Was expecting a quick meal but instead waited for 30 min for 2 biscuits . The staff is very unresponsive and immature and I personally will never step foot in it again . Bad place if you will go with kids under 5 years old. My kids were playing and the waiter told me that we need to leave for the noise. The food is is not a big deal but a little advice, if you say that the sandwich is cold or not toasted enough, the waiter will check the sandwich temperature with his finger in front of you. Initially when I walked in I was fairly impressed. The general store was nice and had a decent selection. I was looking for a cup of coffee so I went down stairs to the deli with intentions of going back upstairs to grab a few items. Upon stepping toward the counter the person at the counter was taking an order so I got in line behind them. The person taking the order snapped her head toward me and raised her entire hand toward my face and very rudely shouted at me "Excuse me, this is the LAST order! We are closed for 45 minutes!" This was at 11am. Very rude and clearly not interested in my business. I politely said ok and left. They will not get my business. I can find coffee some where else. read more
