What a great night out! Came here for a work function. Brought the family and had a blast. There were activities for my two daughters who could care less about baseball. The food was not princes in left field and was decent for minor league food. The team was solid and the crowd and staff was very friendly. We will be visiting the ball park more often to root for the Keys.

Some sloppy play, but some brilliant plays too. It's minor league team (A level) under the Baltimore Orioles organization. The ballpark is nice and cheap and I've reviewed it separately. The fan engagement was pretty good here with the usual tshirts being launched into the crowd from a slingshot (hot dogs, too!), some silly games, some fun stuff and of course, what team is complete without a mascot. The Frederick Keys have Keyote, as in coyote. It's funny. After the seventh inning stretch, everyone shakes their car keys. I felt a little left out because all I have is a key fob for my rental car. (I wasn't really left out - I shaked it anyway.) Even being behind the net in back of home plate, there were still quite a few balls that ricocheted off the skyboxes so you do still have to pay attention. The team is named after Frederick native and author of the Star Spangled Banner, Francis Scott Key.

I have only gone to a Frederick Keys game twice but both times it was a great experience! We went at the end of June on a Friday night and the parking lot was packed! There was someone in the lot directing traffic so we ended up parking on the grass! It was so much fun! That night was Minion night and they had different mascots competing during the breaks! There is a kids area where you have to buy tickets to go down the big bouncy slide, a merry-go-round, and a few carnival type games! The stadium is bright and clean and there were fireworks at the end of the night! I was very impressed with this minor league game! My daughter had so much fun and she hardly watched the game lol! The line to get food was a bit chaotic but I guess everyone rushed over after work and wanted food at the same time! The food was a bit on the $$ side so bring your money! :)

This ballpark looks just like the ballpark where the Bowie Baysox play. The game we went to this evening was Seinfeld night and they had the soup nazi from the show making an appearance and signing autographs. Fireworks were after the game and before the fireworks all the children got to run the bases on field. Minor League baseball is a great piece of Americana. I love these ballparks. It takes you back to a simpler time with a small town feel. Parking is free when you go to a game. And they have a large play zone for the children. If you never been to a minor league game and enjoy seeing baseball being played by players chasing their dream to make it to the big leagues one day, go! Also it's a great way to introduce kids to baseball for a fraction of what it would cost to go to a Baltimore orioles or Washington nationals game.

Positives: 1) Easy to get to 2) Free Parking (which is rare) 3) Every seat is great Negatives: 1) Food was pricey ($17 for two hotdogs, a bottled water, and a large soda) 2) The game I attended easily had less than 200 people there and an usher was bothering me asking to see my ticket because I was sitting behind the dugout (I had the ticket for the actual seat. However, the last thing I need is to be harassed when trying to relax at the ballpark) 3) Had a security guard with a power trip who had to go through my entire camera bag at the gate (Again, I'm not smuggling in beer or outside food. I'm not sure who does. Between this guy and the usher I did not at all come away with a fan-friendly experience!!)

We were happy to be back at the Frederick Keys during their opening week--as they have returned to being a High-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles.

Charm City Roller Girls - The All-Star Team (Nationally Ranked)

    Charm City Roller Girls

If you haven't been exposed to "modern-day" roller derby, stop reading now and go Google the Charm…read moreCity Roller Girls. These are fast women, furious women, forward women, fluid women, friggin' awesome women who have elevated what was once kitschy, 1970's brawl and sprawl entertainment into a legitimate athletic extravaganza. I attended their 2011 season opener which was an expo-style event featuring each of CCRG's home teams -- Junkyard Dolls, Night Terrors, Mobtown Mods, and Speed Regime -- in 30-minute matches against regional adversaries like the D.C. Roller Girls and the Mason-Dixon Roller Vixens from Hagerstown, Maryland. In all seriousness, don't worry about being new to the game. There were a plethora of derby girls wandering around eager to extol the virtues of the sport. It was in this way that I learned that roller derby matches are actually called "bouts" because they are a fight to the finish. Each bout is broken into thirty-minute halves. Those halves consist of an undetermined number of two-minute jams. Consider the jams like a round in boxing. Each jam is a race between the two teams to score points. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins. Simple...yet, electrifying. Trying to describe everything we saw that night without using visual aids is almost pointless. But, believe me when I tell you that watching the ladies whiz around the track, while backed by the powerful funk of an unseen DJ and two quick-witted announcers, is an activity that is fun for all ages. This was our first CCRG bout, so we couldn't leave the venue without hitting the souvenir table. Their merchandise is extensive, including buttons, lighters, bumper stickers, jewelry, posters, et cetera. I bought a fitted zippered hoodie for $35. My boyfriend bought a T-shirt, but balked a bit at the $20 price tag. So, I will tell you what the gal at the table told us: CCRG runs entirely on the work of its skaters. Everything from the scheduled season to the laying down of the skater's track is handled by the team and nobody gets paid. Therefore, every purchase is essentially a donation that affords these ladies an opportunity to play the sport they love. Hooked yet? Well, the Charm City Roller Girls bout once a month at the Du Burns Arena in Canton. You can visit their Website or their Facebook page to obtain tickets and more information. Admission can also be purchased at the door, but I wouldn't risk it. The joint was packed 30 minutes before the first bout even started. Tickets range from $10 general admission to $25 VIP. MissionTix is their online vendor and charges an additional one to two dollars as a processing fee. Either way, tickets are a bargain considering you get two full hours of roller derby with every purchase. On a final note, be prepared to park on the street. The Du Burns Arena does have off-street parking, but you may have trouble finding a space. Do not let this deter you. The arena is located in a safe neighborhood with plenty of unrestricted street parking. I'm going to say it. I'm pretty miffed…read more. From an early age, I realized that I just didn't fit in anywhere. When my 4th grade classmates were reading "Little House of the Prairie", I was doing battle with the X-men and soaring the skies with Voltron. While my 7th grade girlfriends were wearing lace leggings and tragically teasing their hair like Madonna, I sported a peek-a-boo hairdo, a la Veronica Lake and was mad at my parents because they wouldn't let me legally change my name to "Fenny Rita Hayworth". In college, I learned to do body shots at frat parties, all the while longing to return to my room to finish the H.G. Wells inspired dress that I wanted to wear for my oral presentation on Edwardian mores. Yes, I was an odd duck. Then, my best friend entered into my life. A little punk, a little rock and roll but 100% amazing, she loved all of the fringe and crazy things that I loved. Comics, burlesque, pin-up...and roller derby. So why am I miffed? Because, although I have always been infatuated with all of these things, *she* was the one that ALWAYS discovers the underground (although now, less underground) outlets for these hobbies. Take for instance roller derby. I've been a huge fan of roller derbies since I stumbled upon an old bootleg VHS tape of an old 1948 roller derby match when I was 13. It captured my imagination and made me even more despondent that the all the "cool" eras were eras that have long since passed me by. In the intervening years, I had since learned to reconcile this disappointment and found other outlets for my frustration... ...that is, until my BFF called me up one day and was all "OMG OMG OMG! There is a Baltimore ALL GIRLS ROLLER DERBY TEAM!!!" WHAT?!?!?! HOW??? WHEN??? And most importantly...WHY NOW that I'm too out of shape, decrepit and slow to join the team?!?!?! Regardless, at the very next match, I booked it up there with the drama-llama (less said about her the better), and sat on the dirty and dusty floor of the roller rink, held spell-bound by the awesome ferociousness (and adorably cute - yet functional) outfits that the Charm City Roller Girls wore. These girls were fierce - and not Tyra Banks' "smile-with-your-cheeckbones-fierce" - this was *real* fierceness. Grunting and screaming, they would push, elbow, shove, their opponents out of the way, whipping their teammates to the forefront and boldly throwing themselves in harms way for the advantage. In a bar fight, these are the girls I want to get my back. Trust. They threw each other into brick walls (one girl broke her collarbone right there) and got in the ref's faces when they dared to call a foul on that (heh). In short, it was fast, it was brutal, and it was GLORIOUS. Shortly after this bout, the ladies of CCRGs became friends with my BFF and invited her to parties (in which I happily tagged along). There, I found that these ladies were sweet, charming and hardly in a million years would one ever suspect any of them to have the moxie to brazenly send an opponent to the hospital then become angry at the referee for sending them to the time-out box. In a nutshell, these girls lived up to - and yes, exceeded - my expectations of what a roller derby bout should be. Just because they are chicks doesn't mean that they are girlie. A hearty and unabashed 5 star standing ovation to the awesomeness that are the CCRG and a boo and a hiss to my BFF for being the first to discover yet another awesome thing that I have come to love and adore. I kid, I kid. No boos or hisses to her. She's seriously perfection and it's not her fault for being infinitely cooler then me. Plus I owe her big time for making my burlesque and pin-up dreams come true...but that's another review for another day... :)

I was amazed to see a very full Verizon Center for the inaugural game! The whole experience was exciting. The fans were cheering non-stop, there was so much going on! Players flew over walls, balls were caught by excited fans, t-shirts were thrown to the crowd, and there was excellent entertainment between plays!! The Valor team absolutely abolished the Baltimore Bregade! It was obvious that there was a lot of talent on the field. I saw good sportsmanship as well. Players on both teams would help each other up after a fall. The players, and coach, also interacted a bit with the crowd. They were waving to people calling out to them, and they even got the crowd cheering. I'd say this is a great family activity. There were a lot of kids that were engaged and enjoying the game. If you have t seen arena football I encourage you to get to a Valor game adap! I'm so glad we have season tickets and can't wait to see the Valor dominate the field again!

Brand new franchise and they absolutely nailed it on opening night!…read more As an inaugural season ticket holder we had several special events prior to the first ever kickoff. The events included Coach Cokinos and went a long way towards welcoming the new fans. Coach answered numerous questions about payroll, strategy, rosters, and rules. We finally got to see Coach's plan in full effect on Friday night. Our seats are five rows from the field and right next to the Valor sideline. We are close enough to hear every word and all of the in-game coaching decisions. QB Meyer executed the offensive game plan beautifully and WR Washington was all over the field. It's going to be exciting watching these guys all season. The prices for beer and food is what you would expect at the Verizon Center (overpriced) but the tickets to the game are reasonably priced. This is definitely a family event with lots of excitement to be had by all. I even caught a ball and got to keep it! The product on the field is elite level and the excitement in the stands is through the roof. Absolutely make the time to check out the next Valor game!

Woah. WHAT WHAT? A couple things that have blown my mind…read more 1) There is a Major League Lacrosse team. Like, at all. and 2) ANNAPOLIS has a league. WHAAAAAAT? Right? I'm confused and blown too. My husband played lacrosse in high school and loved it. He had always played football and was a football jock (ugh, I know, I hate them too...fortunately, he's lovable enough to overcome this unfortunate flaw), but when his best friend in HS introduced him to lacrosse, he found what really made him happy. So one day, we're out, and having dinner when the bartender turns the TV to a lacrosse game. My husband immediately is rivited and starts explaining why I should be utterly fascinated by this. As he's talking, the guy sitting next to him, starts telling him about the Annapolis team...and how we're actually pretty good. WHAT WHAT? We have a *league*?!? So, clearly, tickets were immediately purchased and the next thing I know, I'm sitting on the first row, at the 50 yard line, watching incredibly adorably hot guys run past. Right. Best part about lacrosse: uber hot guys. Second best part about lacrosse: uber cheap tickets. We were sitting at the 50 yard line, front row...and tickets were something like $25 each. Third best part about lacrosse? Sitting 10 feet away, staring at uber hot guys. Seriously, why didn't anyone ever tell me about this???!!!??? Arguably, my new favorite sport in the WHOLE WIDE WORLD now. Um...I think we won. I really wasn't paying attention. But my husband had a blast, I had a surprisingly good time, and, again...uber hot guys. Right.
