After eight years on housing wait lists, I finally moved into a new studio apartment for low-income seniors last week. A beautiful living space is important to me, but I'm on a tight budget. I saved some money over the past few years to finance my move and interior decoration. When I checked out a couple big showrooms on Geary St, I was quite dismayed by the price quotes I was getting for any brand or style of purple carpeting (a rare color choice, as it happens, meaning more expensive than your basic carpet colors). Yelp sent quote requests to half a dozen local carpet dealers and Fred Thayer got back to me personally the same day with a quote that was astoundingly low compared to those big dealers I visited. That was a Saturday, and by Monday evening he was at my place with carpet samples to take exact measurements and give me a hard quote. He gave me a couple different options and didn't try to upsell me to the more expensive carpet. We ended up bumping the price up by $400 which included tax and installation, for a final price that was 30% to 50% lower than what those other dealers wanted to charge me. It took about a week to special order the purple carpet from a manufacturer in Georgia and get it in stock. It came in a day earlier than expected and Fred called me that day to schedule an installation for the next day (just twelve days after our initial conversation). Yesterday his main guy Jose showed up with an assistant and did an excellent job installing the carpet in just under three hours. They were both friendly, worked hard, and did a fantastic job. The purple carpet looks fabulous in my studio and complements the purple drapes I'm bringing from my old living space. Jose has been doing this for thirty years and Fred's been in business for over fifty years. These guys are top-notch professionals, at a competitive price. Not the huge selection and big fancy showrooms, but quality product delivered quickly and installed to the highest standards. Welp, I'm a bit late with this, but kind of works out to let you know how the carpet is holding up 3+yrs later. Fred came out three plus years ago to get measurements, show us which carpets were available and gave us an estimate. Super nice guy, showed up on time, very professional, gave us a very fair price and set up an appointment for the removal of our old carpet and the install of the new carpet. Day of install, his guys showed up on time and knocked it out quick. We had moved our living room and bedroom stuff to the kitchen ahead of time to help speed things up, but they helped us get everything back in place after. All in all, a great experience. Three years later the carpet is holding up perfectly. We did get it treated. I've spilled stuff on it and the liquid literally stands on top of the carpet. So weird. I swing a golf club in the living room and do get "turf interaction" with the carpet, no probs, thank God, cause my wife wouldn't be happy about that. The reason I'm writing this is because a friend is looking for a guy, and I was like, "I gotta guy." So I asked my wife, "How much did Fred charge, can you search your texts?" She looked it up and was like,"We never Yelped him, I said we would." So I said "I'll Yelp him and say he was great, his guys did a great job, and it's three years later and the carpet is holding up great." ...if you're looking for a guy, Fred is your guy...and that's all I have to say about that. read more

Time had come to finally replace oolder than we'd like to admit carpet and I was dreading the whole getting new carpet process. But Fred made it so easy! Responded with and estimate within minutes and set up and I'm home visit within a few days. He measured and brought really nice samples and sent us a formal quote the next day which was right in where his first estimate was. He said he needs to order the color we wanted and a week later the carpet was ready to be installed. They came out on a Saturday and were fabulous they were so professional and efficient -they moved our furniture in all three rooms with no problems whatsoever. And the carpet is great quality! Would not hesitate to recommend. Wow! Great and prompt service. I contacted Fred on a Saturday morning and he came by in the afternoon to give us an estimate. Before he arrived, we communicated via text message, provided the room dimensions and a photo of our current carpet (installed in 2004 - I think we were due for a change!). He brought samples, we selected the carpet and it was installed on Monday afternoon. Fred's crew were amazing. Extremely nice, on time, and removed all the furniture from the rooms. I offered to assist, but they wouldn't let me. Put everything back in ordered, vacuumed and even cleaned the sidewalk area with a blower to get rid of any remnants. On top of it, the cost was VERY reasonable! We originally contacted two other companies (went into their stores) and the cost was more than double.
