When I lived in Seattle, Fred Meyer was the closest affordable grocery store to my apartment. I didn't shop there because it was a nice grocery store, I shopped there because it was convenient. It was my back up plan when I could't find what I needed at the neighboring Trader Joe's. Imagine my surprise when I stopped into this Fred Meyer on a recent trip to Portland and found: a conveyor belt of sushi, a Murray's Cheese counter (with samples), a large organic section, and a GROWLER FILLING STATION with SIXTEEN different craft beers on tap. Unbelievable! The prices here are still the same as the old Fred Meyer, rock bottom, but the new perks at this location are anything but same old. This is the holy grail of grocery. I love this place. Prices aren't astronomically high due to location, they're the same as any other Fred Meyer. They have anything you could possibly need, including fresh conveyor belt and prepared sushi, hot prepared meals, Moonstruck chocolates, and specialty items (or things I haven't found elsewhere, such as PB2 and Walden Farms). The deli counter has been phenomenal every time I've been here. Their garden center prices are lower than most places and for the smaller space they have a great selection. They are lacking in two areas: a clothing section, food storage (I'm kind of a lunch tupperware freak). I don't buy clothes at Fred Meyer, so whatever. The chocolates and sushi make up for what's lacking. I can't live without my PB2. read more

Great store and very convenient for my daughter. Great produce, healthy options and all around great selection. Parking lot is kind of tight but can't really do anything about that. Aisles are spacious (unless people are in your way or leave the cart in the middle or walk on the side of their cart ). We wanted to get a combination lock but the lock was under lock and key. One of the employees called over the PA that we needed assistance. This crabby elderly lady came and mumbled something, opened the lock, gave my husband the item and walked away. She then ventured on her way with her cart doing who knows what. Obviously, she didn't want to be there and it showed. Really awful Covid procedures. I can't in good conscience shop here because of the obvious lack of concern that management has for staff. They've taken almost none of the steps that other grocery stores like New Seasons have taken: - website says capacity is managed digitally, but from experience there is no apparent capacity cap. the two times I've gone, there were tons of people in the store and no line outside. social distancing was not possible in the store. - website says that face-coverings are mandatory, but some customers were not wearing masks - no hazard pay or additional discounts/benefits for staff - no paid time off for staff caring for family with Covid19 - no directional markings on aisles - unclear if this location has special hours for high risk individuals +1 star because "Scan, Bag, Go" seems helpful read more

The Hawthorne Fred Meyer is unique among all the other Fred Meyer stores for several reasons. First a little bit of a negative but it is what's called a marketplace store and they have extremely limited apparel basically a selection of some socks and underwear. Seasonally they do have winter gloves, scarves and hats. Next for those looking for organic produce they boast having over 200 options. The beer and wine selection is absolutely amazing as is the fresh meat department, service deli and they even have a rotating belt sushi bar that opens for lunch at 11. There is a groller station with 16 beers too. I've always been pleased with the help and courtesy of the associates and they all seem to go out of their way to make my shopping experience pleasurable. read more

My dog is sick, which is stressful. The vet suggested that I try a Fred Meyer pharmacy; that the prescription may be cheaper there. So I went, and it was a terrible experience. The first woman trying to help me kept mumbling, and even though she was behind the counter in the blue technician coat, it was like she expected me to facilitate the transaction. When I tried to give her information / answer her mumbled questions, she would look at me confused and then smile like she wanted to laugh... Imagine your family pet or your grandparent or your child or spouse was just diagnosed with something that's going to take several months, lots of money, lots of time to heal and make better. Then you go to a pharmacy where someone treats your situation and your distress like a joke. If that sounds fun to you, then head on down to Hawthorne FM! :) Sarcasm because I'm annoyed and frustrated... To keep from jumping over the counter and fatally shaking this technician with zero customer service skills, I said no thanks and returned to the line - for another technician. But Mumbly Technician, as I'll always remember her, kept talking at me from her workstation. Even when I repeatedly said "No thanks, I'd like to work with someone." And thought "Could not be more awkward. Unnecessary. No means no in every situation. Just don't do that ever absolutely never. Move on; there are others you can (try to) help... In other words, I have told you I'm stressed and you're making it worse!!" I stayed in line, needing a technician with sensitivity and common sense. Just for kicks, when I was working with the second technician - who efficiently and quickly set up my FM account, asked succinct and clear questions, and also understood my responses - Mumbly Technician went to a colleague in the back area and was clearly whispering about me. Which isn't professional or respectful. And it may even even illegal - PHIPA and HIPPA, right? Not to mention terrible and tacky timing - I mean, effing gossip about the encounter after I leave the pharmacy. Yes, I'm stressed. But I am also together enough to provide last name, phone number, and other personal health information - when the interaction is normal, like with the second technician. I usually go to Walgreens, where technicians are patient, professional, procedural, and explain a pharmaceutical step I may not know about - I almost didn't experience that at Hawthorne FM Pharmacy. According to Jamie the manager, Fred Meyers new corporate policy is to no longer issue cash refund's in 2023 (they will only pay in Fred Meyers gift certificates on items over a hundred dollars), Jamie says it's the new 2023 Fred Meyer corporate Policy! However Hollywood Fred Meyers refunded my cash and honored my receipts (especially because I paid with a credit card). I was in here briefly and did not see a black basket to take my items. So, I shopped around, and then had a handful of items at the end in my arms to take to the check out. Well, that's just life, now isn't it!? As I was walking to the register, however, a security guard was walking around. And, walked right past me! OMG - he had a brandished GUN. I mean, really? Can you not do your job without your GUN being shown so outright? Not to get on the subject, but what does it have to be OUT? Can you not conceal it, in the event of a real danger? How many 'shoplifters' has your 'brandished gun' actually deterred? How many people look at you with sheer disdain and at other times, fear as a result of your 'brandished gun' hanging on your hip? You have some type of hand gun - fair enough. But, why do you have to SHOW IT? People from say, Italy, or Belgium would look at you in shock. Then, run away from you with all of their children, too! If you actually had to use your body to chase a 'shoplifter' down would you be able to do so? Are you physically fit? Or, would you rather have 'the gun' do all the work for you? They have the nerve to have a beer/wine bar, and the men's restroom can be smelled from the hallway. Devastatingly disgusting. Then, I go into the stall, toilet seat soaked. I used a total of four toilet seat protectors. Three, I placed on the seat before I squatted. The fourth I used to wipe myself. Fred Meyer is pretty consistent at every location. Nothing exceptional just your standard grocery store. I will say, I always go to this location in particular because the layout is less overwhelming for me. They have groceries on the first floor and home goods on the second floor. This layout is a lot easier to shop in than the traditional one level, I think at least. read more

I am sorry to say that this is my last trip to Fred Meyers :( The store reorganization put all the organic food mixed in so I need to search through all the aisles to find stuff that used to be all together. It feels like a blatant play for me to buy more Kroger and Kellogg products. I am currently waiting in another line to check out. This is the third time that this has happened to me. They are clearly cutting corners here as well. The people who work here are trying, but the bosses are clearly not paying attention to the customers. They are added for self checkout so they don't have to hire more people. From now on, I will be at Trader Joe's and Natural Grocers. We are also cancelling our credit card through them. I wanted to make beef stew. I ask the butcher about using chuck steak. He directed to packages of chuck that was cut for stewing. Oh my God, I would have been better using cardboard--not as stringy. This is tasteless, dry, stringy--and the pieces when chewed are the consistency of sawdust. Total choking hazard. I'm an old lady, used to barbecue chuck roasts years ago--and they were delicious, lots of fat. Truly, I just spend about 2 hours and I'm not sure this is going to be edible. I rarely go to FM's. I went because Trader Joe's doesn't have large cuts of beef, when last I looked. And the 2-lb. package of so-called stewing meat was about $14.00. So to summarize, BAD and EXPENSIVE. read more

Went in for the large ceramic bird bath on sale in their advertisements ...to my disappointment they would not honor their ad saying that the printer had made an error. I spoke with seven different people before the manager of the gardening area finally came out, 45 minutes later, and told me what was going on. in the in the past they have always honored their advertisements with me. Rock and Roll Fred Meyer!!! The first Teddy Bear I remember owning came from Fred Meyer. It was a Fred Bear. It had a purple vest and a big red bow along with those goofy dots all over it's snout. I loved that damn thing. It was Teddy Bear Day at daycare and my dad rolled up here the night before to honor the occasion. Did you know that this holiday is honor of Teddy Rosevelt refusing to shoot a black bear while on a hunting trip? The employees of Fred Myers are The Rough Riders. I read the other day that some have worked as many as twenty days in a row. All I can say is thank you very much for all your hard work. You are putting food on the table in major way. Pretty sure I dropped that Fred Bear in the toilet the day I brought it to school and didn't tell anyone. My older brother made him eat a spider once too. Of my favored toys it had the longest surviving friendship. Every year for Christmas I'd ask for a model train and break it the very next day. There was a toy helicopter in the communal toys at daycare with tinted windows. Whenever Ms. Husky had her back turned, I'd smash that thing on the ground like I was trying to dig my way out of prison. I just wanted to see what the guy flying the thing looked like or if there was even a man in there at all. I still wanna know who stole my Yikes! Pencil box. The cake decorators are timeless in their practice. They have always been my favorite. I love your gluten free chicken nuggets. Those Hempler pepperoni sticks should replace cigars in celebratory childbirth. Lord knows I felt like Groucho Marx when I used to chop on those bad boys. I think you have one of the best curations of toys and electronics I've ever seen. Almost impulse bought that tantrum keyboard pad with the drum machine on it for my nephew, but I actually want to be able to see him again. At New Seasons, it says "We lived on nothing but food and water for days" (W.C. Fields). At Fred Meyer, it says "C'mon now, drink your milk, we can't put it back in the cow, can we?" (Andy Griffith). We used to call clothes that one bought form this store "Freddy Fall-Apart(s)" This location did away with the clothing upstairs. We go here at least once a week to stock up on provisions. Since Krogger bought them out, the dress code has become so relaxed. The Hawthorne store is the most laid back of all them. It's your one stop shopping center. read more

It's simple, if you've been to Fred Meyer then you know what you're in for. This one is a bit different than the others I've been to. It's got conveyer belt sushi for one thing and a pretty decent cheese area as well as breads. The pastry area is smaller than some of the others I have been to. The meat and seafood area is good as well and you can get you're beer in a growler to go, so that's a good thing to know, even with all the places popping up to get growler filled. It's not close to me, a nice healthy walk but sometimes it's where you want to go if Safeway (kinda sad and crowded feeling) or New Seasons (overpay for less) are not the places you want to go to. Everytime I've gone here to pick up some pasta salad or other bulk item from the deli counter the service has been unacceptably slow. Always 5 employees behind the counter but only 1 person is helping customers? How many people does it take to bake a chicken? Also the level of customer service is severely lacking, employees avoiding eye contact, no one greets you. Last time I came here I waited at the deli counter for over 8 minutes (I was the only other person in line) and no one addressed me or bothered to help. I do not understand. read more

Sad, sad, sad. This used to be one of my favorite stores in Portland - not any more. They've clearly purposefully redesigned this store to be not user friendly and to push certain goods. They were out of so many items on a Saturday night that it looked like the tsunami was about to hit Oregon. They've taken away the organic area, moved the veggie/vegan things next to the dairy (makes no sense!), gotten rid of check-out lines, and the kale I bought was the brownest and most sad kale I've seen since I moved to Portland in 2011. This is probably one of the few places you can shop for furniture, gourmet cheese, pet food, desserts from multiple local bakeries, and eat unagi right off the plate all within the same store. This store has become so gourmet and fancy, I don't even know what to do with myself half the time I'm in there. There's an olive bar, a cheese counter that wraps around, tons of pastries, cakes, and tarts from local bakeries like Papa Hayden and Jaciva's, they fry their own chips (chippery), they bake their own tortillas and breads, there's a sushi bar in the middle of the deli, and on the list goes. They also happen to have the nicest carts around. They are plastic, quiet like a cloud, and have grippy handles. They also have a car cart that makes me wish my legs were just a couple inches shorter so I could fit into. Though that would be quite unamusing for my bf that would have to push me around. The crowds are kind of crazy and weird at this location, but don't let that stop you from seeing all the new things they've done to the place. Btw, those chippery chips are awesome. This is the hippest Fred Meyer I've seen. Sushi bar, olive bar, free wi-fi & coffee shop, and a decent organics selection (though still small compared to New Seasons, Zupans, etc.). And for someone like me living 50 yards from it make it the most reasonable place to shop. So for the other 95% of people that have to drive, I totally understand if you absolutely despise the parking situation. And the universal question that everyone deals with is price. Yeah, it's not as pricey as New Seasons, but then again, it's not bargain discount like Winco or Grocery Outlet. It just has the "Hawthorne" premium that you'll pay at any chain store that locates here versus Gresham. Drop in for convenience, and as long as you're not low on dough, you'll have no problem getting what you want. read more

I never really got Fred Meyer. It's chaotic, expensive (you think you should be getting a good deal because it's such a difficult place to be, but no), old and depressing, downmarket in all the wrong ways. OK, they've picked it up a bit and if I need a giganto bag of dog food, it's Fred's. But their customer service is a model of inefficiency and near hostility (enough to say that consumer satisfaction does not show up on their radar). House brand quality is not nearly as good as Safeway and prices can be higher. Always busy, hard to park, hard to get in and out of the store. Was it any better when it was locally owned? Not really, no. I do give them credit for remodeling the store (again) and trying to be super energy efficient. But really, it's lipstick on a pig. read more

Once, I thought I didn't get all my products and was freaked out cause I needed them for my boss NOW, and she asked all the front clerks if they had seen a specific bag while I waited and when I was still w/o my bag of stuff she then offered to go through the camera to find out exactly what happened to it. I told her Id check once more through my friends car, and then I saw the bag was just behind something in the car :/ I felt SO lame but she was polite and just really nice about it - She was NOT rude and didn't make me feel like I wasted her time, which in essence, I did. I appreciated that! Another great customer service dept experience was when I was buying a juicer, and I asked about the 'what if's' of buying a juicer at "the grocery store" and the return policy. The daytime short blondish hair manager said, w the most sincere smile, "just hold on to the receipt and bring it back if ANYthing happens." I felt 100% confident to purchase the $120 item on sale for $80. A great value AND reassured returned policy. Yes and yes ! :) The Cons: *No apparel or shoe section :( *The housewares dept is out of place downstairs and seems so under shopped. *Great quality items available but usually overpriced and in just in the way. *I have rarely have nice customer service at the chocolate case. :( A lot of times rude or not informed of their products, ingredients/how its made. I've literally stood for mins while a young girl and older gentlemen held a conversation about their weekends :( I said hello as I first walked up and was looking at the chocolates. Nothing. I was already late for bus and my mom's birthday, yes my fault Im late, but still those were precious mins and I of course missed the bus. I've lived in the Mount Tabor area for over forty years, and my family lived nearby when I was growing up too, so the Hawthorne Fred Meyer store has been my "home" grocery store for a long time. Over the decades, I've seen it through several different major remodelings all the way to its current configuration. Of course I love the whole store, but this review is specifically for the hot food buffet in their deli department. For $6.99 a pound, I like the variety available, and most of it is pretty tasty too. The "cuisine" changes from day to day. For example, I know that Tuesdays are Mexican day because that's when I can get the chicken enchiladas. . .the ones made with green chili verde sauce are especially good. Today was Italian day and I got some vegetarian lasagna and one big meatball in marinara sauce. Good tasting stuff. I know the buffet steam table is "hygienic" because I've seen employees stick little thermometers into the food to make sure everything is kept at the proper temperature. That's reassuring. Overall, $6.99 a pound is a reasonable price for the variety of food you can choose, the tastiness, and (most of all) the convenience. read more

This location is going through a bunch of changes, and every one of them is awful. I loved this place until recently - all of their produce and health food was in one area up front, so I rarely had to venture into the massive rest of the store. Now, they've gotten rid of their health food section, so if I want to run in and grab something, I now have to search for it all over the store. Basically, there's no more "running in to grab something." I also used this as my hardware and home goods store - they always had everything I needed. Basically, it was my lovely alternative to Walmart. Now, they've moved all of their non-food items into the tiny upstairs area, which means by default, they're getting rid of most of it. The last few times I've tried to buy something other than food (curtains, bbq stuff, tools), they just don't sell it any more, or don't have enough selection to be useful. This is the most frustrating one - they used to always have plenty of cashiers, so I never, ever had to wait in line. Now, they've changed how they do cashiers, so now you basically have to use a self-checkout (which I hate so much - I've never once gotten through the process without requiring an attendant), or else you have to stand in a giant line. It's such a bummer. It was a great place to get a bunch of things done in one spot, but if the whole thing is going to be this frustrating, I'm just going to stick to New Seasons and Division Hardware from now on. They opened a growler filling station like.. TODAY. I just happened to walk in that area of the store (the beer section on the Hawthorne side) today and was like.. huh, did I never notice this before? an employee was giving out beer samples. Good variety of local beer, lots of types like belgian tripels, stouts, IPAs, two flavors of cider, and more. (see photo) I like their bulk section. Much cheaper than bulk at Whole Foods. They have smaller bulk stuff like spices just behind that main bulk section, and they're lower-priced than at New Seasons nearby. Sometimes they have organic apples on sale. They carry my favorite ice cream brand, Snoqualmie! (back in the Bay Area, I could only find it at Whole Foods). So yeah, they have pretty much all the stuff I need at low-decent prices. Plus a bottle recycling center in the back of the parking lot that gives you store credit. I wish it was more european-style and inside the building, (so more people would recycle often instead of just people with smelling shopping carts-full holding up the line), though, but it's still better than having a recycling center that's only open during normal business hours. and basic info from Bryan I's review: "This is the hippest Fred Meyer I've seen.
