Ive shopped at Fred Meyers for years but since it sold to Kroger it can no longer be trusted. When you check out now you better watch the charges. Every time I find that the price on the shelves for items on sale is often not what shows up on the register. It is always higher, never lower that posted on the shelves, suspicious I'd say. I believe their new pricing scam to list several prices on the shelf tags showing the MSRP and the so-called discount members price plus sale price create a shell-game cover for their pricing scam. I've been to this location only a handful of times and it's hard to determine if this location is worth buying things from. In my opinion, it's where you shop in this store where you encounter an employee. Back at the beginning of the month, I visited this location and I saw a kid being given a hard time by an employee at the self checkout. The kid looked like he was about to panic and as much as I wanted to intervene, I felt I would have made things worse. Well, that's just the world now, isn't it?! The next day, I went back and told a security guard what had happened and got laughed at. Overall, a good selection of what you could want and friendly employees. Shelves are well-stocked and employees know how to work together as a team in order to satisfy the needs of customers. This store is the best out of any Fred's I have been to in the area, due to the cool area this store is in, it has more Organic Produce than any of there other stores. They have a sushi bar inside this place, and I am not talking just take and go, no I mean you sit down and they make sushi right in front of you. This place also has a great beer selection more than I have ever seen in any of there other stores, they even have a hard to find soda called Cheerwine and with all of this under one roof I must say I love it here. I have been coming to this grocery store numerous times a week for the last year and a half, and every single time in the last few months, my Arizona state ID has not been able to scan into their system. Arizona ID's also do not have expiration dates. The staff will literally eye me up and down and it's always the same staff members that I see on a daily basis. They know me and pull this charade every single time. Just earlier today, I had a new clerk ring me up and she got SO suspicious that I was using a fake ID, to where she whispered into her walkie that she needed a manager for a suspicious ID. The manager, who was apparently also new and I've never seen before, literally stared at me up and down as well as my ID. She then proceeded to smirk saying it needs an expiration date. So i googled AZ id's expiration dates and low and behold, I proved her that AZ ID's have no expiration date. I also showed her that AZ driver's licenses don't expire until the person turns 65 years old. They both claimed to have never heard of that, when literally every other store I shop at where I need to show my ID, they always make a comment about AZ drivers licenses being those weird ones with lengthy expiration dates. A lot of people from Arizona live here, so this isn't something that's super rare. I also never have an issue with ANY other store scanning my ID. It literally scans everywhere, but this store. The manager then became very sarcastic and rude, by questioning me about the state of Oregon, asked how long I've lived here and when exactly did I move here. I said i moved here two weeks before my 30th birthday, so you can see from my birth date on my ID that it has been 3 years. She then nastily said "ha, so why haven't you gotten an oregon ID yet?" I then reminded her of the Covid shutdowns and the DMV's being shutdown for so many months that began in 2020, right after I moved here, which then that caused a massive backlog of appointments. I then proceeded to tell her that yes, now you can get an appointment, however they're booked out a month and my appointment is October 17th to get my Oregon ID. They all then began investigating my ID even more and staring back at me for an annoying and unnecessary amount of time, when I then suggested that they can manually enter my ID number rather than scanning, because it is a legit ID number,l. They both then looked at each other and rolled their eyes and once again, eyed me up and down and continued to figit with my id for even longer. I then showed them my laminated birth certificate card to further prove who I am and my date of birth, and they said they can't accept that because it doesn't have a photo of me, and also they have never heard of birth certificate cards, and proceeded to mock me. IT IS A LEGIT BIRTH CERTIFICATE. I received it in Montana when I turned 18 and was moving to Seattle. You can clearly see that it is an official government birth certificate. So, after another 2 minutes of being investigated, they finally allowed me, a 32 year old (I will be 33 in 2 weeks) customer who has been coming to this store multiple times a week for the last year and a half, to purchase my bottle of wine. The manager then said the the clerk "ugh, I'm so done for the day, I've had enough of annoying people." Listen, I understand policies with purchasing alcohol and being cautious of fake ID's, but for god sake, I'm about it be 33 years old and I frequent this store weekly. The interrogations from the staff and incredibly nasty looks and and rude comments were beyond unnecessary. Needless to say, the blonde manager with the resting bitch face wearing the white dress today, 09/5/2022, is a horrible employee and a sad excuse of a manager. read more

Never thought I would come to Fred Meyer for dessert. Have to admit they do carry good selection. Not a lot but enough to make me got lost in dessert decision. The price is fairly good.. not too expensive. I picked up a few varieties of cheesecakes, and cupcakes. And they don't taste any less than the Patisserie that sell specialty dessert. The varieties might not be as much as those stores but it's good enough for a last minute take out. read more

Okay, I am an extremely weird tourist, but I LOVE going to Fred Meyer. Seriously - I make it a point to come visit the SE Hawthorne location every time I'm in town. I mean, it's a grocery store on the first floor and a mix of Walmart and Home Depot on the second floor. I get a big kick out of it every time I go. My favorite thing about this location is that they have a large Moonstruck chocolates selection. Near the bakery they have a chocolate case where you can pick up adorable individual pieces and customize boxes to bring home as presents. If you're feeling like being a little cheaper on your souvenirs they also sell Moonstruck chocolate bars in all sorts of flavors in the candy aisle. These bars also go on sale making them much cheaper than trying to buy them in Downtown Portland. They also clearance out their holiday/ seasonal chocolates post season making it a great time to try a few flavors (how can you not smile at 50% off fall truffles?). I love Fred Meyer and I'll continue to go every time I'm in town! read more

Never, ever use this pharmacy. The people who work here are incompetent and utterly useless. Example: I called in my birth control prescription four hours before closing and they confirmed it would be ready in time. I received a text message that said my birth control would not, in fact, be ready until five days later. I went in before closing and they said the text message was incorrect; they just didn't have time to fill it, putting me a day behind on my cycle and consequently at risk for pregnancy. I went in the next day and they said they didn't have any in stock at all, as they "forgot" to order it from the manufacturer. The person I spoke with said they realized the error and had ordered it the day prior. It would arrive in three days. I asked how they could solve this problem since I am now at risk to conceive a child because of their error. He said they could fill it with a different type of birth control that I am allergic to - noted in my file. Obviously, not an option. Then, he said he "checked" and no other pharmacies had this type of birth control so I would just have to wait. I left the pharmacy angry, worried and in tears since I am very sensitive to hormones; changes in my cycle often cause migraines and mood swings. Shortly before the pharmacy closed, they called me back and admitted they had not - as they said - ordered the birth control and were unable to due to an error in their system. They had no idea when they would be able to order it, and no idea when I would be able to fill my prescription. Over the phone, the person told me Walgreens did, in fact, have my birth control in stock - contrary to what I was told earlier. I said I wanted to switch and received an icy response. Hopefully the Walgreens pharmacy has normal, considerate employees. Moral of the story: the people who work at the Fred Meyer pharmacy do not care to properly do their jobs and care even less about your medical needs. I feel like this Fred Meyer is the bane of my grocery shopping existence when visiting my sister here in Portland. The staff is uber pleasant and helpful so no qualms there at all but not sure if I'm just not used to the way Fred Meyer is laid out but I feel like their stock is all over the place. Couldn't find Tahini in the international food section and it wasn't near the Peanut Butter/Jams so had to google "Where is Tahini in Fred Meyer?" to discover it in Organic for 11.99. They have a Deli and a Meat section and salami is in the Deli but bacon is in the Meat. No jalapenos in produce. No spicy Palomas for this girl. Wooden skewers...not in the BBQ or Picnic sections and not even where the lovely staff member pointed me to. Luckily found them Where's Waldo-style. I feel like their selection in many of the departments isn't great through I will say they have an extensive beer and wine selection. Maybe if I lived here I'd become a pro at finding what I need but I am not a huge fan of this FM in PDX. read more

My memory may suffer from some harmful, er, colorful additives, but I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that I can hardly remember what the Fred Meyer on Hawthorne looked like before they started their massive remodeling project. As far as I'm concerned, the store has resembled a refugee camp for groceries forever. One week, the shampoos huddled like shell-shocked orphans next to the toys. The next week, it was like Fred Meyer had never even carried shampoo at all. The produce displays lay like an evacuated islands among stripped floorboards. You could have wrapped a scarf around your head, reached out your hands amidst all the rubble and hastily sorted goods, and cried, "My cat! My cat! Where has the Khmergulagenreich taken my cat?!?" It was amusing, but ultimately frustrating, especially since any shampoo could be easily located and purchased for cheaper at Walgreens down the street. But now that the store on Hawthorne appears to be in its preening, "grand re-opened" state, it's like a whole new universe of cupboard-filling and knick-knack acquirement has been ripped open for me to see. The first thing you see when you come in from the parking lot is a cartoon rendering of dearly departed Freddy Meyer himself (I would assume) kindly directing you to the entrance and not the exit. And the first thing you see, bourgeoisie drum roll please, is seasonal produce. Is this what it's like to be young in one of those former second world nations that are now just reaping some of the easy cash fixes of the free market without the history of the problems it creates? You can grab a magazine, a vendi latte from the Starbucks counter, and quietly chill out in the cafe area on the second level. It really is like Eastern Europe, but with fewer home raids! But it all comes down to the question of whether one should shop here or not. And that's a pretty difficult thing to determine, because given its location smack-dab in the middle of the Inner Southeast (if inner includes anything west of 82nd), you'll probably end up doing so at one point. And Freddy carries a product that may symbolize all the advantages and pitfalls of capitalism: The reclining outdoor chair with a footrest. Seriously, I want this so much it hurts. It took me a while to wrap my head around the idea of a grocery store in which you could also buy an engagement ring, a living room set, and a pair of Lee jeans. But then somebody explained it to me as a vertical Super Target, and life made a little more sense. And now I'm a fan. Why do I like Fred Meyer? - First and foremost, prices were reasonable. That's #1 for a grocery store. - The employees are all super friendly, particularly the dudes that work the meat case. They're quick to make suggestions and tell you how to prepare that random hunk of animal that you aren't sure how to cook. Good fellas, those meat case guys. - The conveyor belt sushi isn't what I'd call "good" but it's certainly a novelty - I got a flu shot here! Take that, Jenny McCarthy! - The deli has a wide selection of delicious options. I've gone with a variety of the sandwiches, and all have been good. The salads are all tasty, and the mac and cheese makes my inner fat-kid happy. Now I can't say that I've been to a ton of different markets in Portland, but we're happy enough with Fred Meyer that there hasn't really been a reason to look elsewhere. read more

We just moved in to the neighborhood & the realtor neglected to mention one of this particular area's 'special features'....you see, this part of PDX is sometimes referred to as "The Peoples' Republic". This seemed just dandy, coming from The Peoples' Republic of Berkeley, CA. There is a certain type of individual who seems to gravitate toward said areas...'alternative' folks. Well, I may be a hippie at heart but when it comes to...lice infestation, I am a firm believer in whippin' out those chemical products! Fortunately, my local Freddie's has me ...uh...covered. Seems the local neighborhood has loads of kids. So, my new equation goes something like this: Kids + other kids (in liberal environs) + loads of time together = LICE Made a pitstop today & bought Rid, coal tar shampoo, and a pair of clippers. I used the "U-Check" system, thereby avoiding the scathing glances of any salesperson who may put two & two together...Now I'm probably in a data base, & instead of one person knowing my family's dirty little secrets, anyone who can access Fred Meyer systems can see what we were up to. The point of all this is that there was everything I needed. Right there. Conveniently located. Oh, & I also picked up some beer for me. I need it at this point... I think this is a great local resource & I'm a fan. So, local parents?? You've been given the 'heads up" in regard to this unnatural household. This Fred Meyers is minty fresh and certainly not the one I usually walk into when I'm visiting the Pacific Northwest. It's also a bit of surprise to even find this store after walking down the hip side of Hawthorne. The ground floor is all groceries is a handsome and well stocked place, with lots of extras. The upper floor is a smaller version of their usual home store, but does have a bonus with a Peet's Coffee located within. The "Going Green" features are also nice and is certainly fitting with local sensibilities. read more

Angry rant begins now: Oh, Hawthorne Fred Meyer, I hate you. You make grocery shopping a nightmare what with your lack of any sort of loosely planned layout for your store. And we're talking PRE-makeover mess. You never bothered to make any sense and instead made me cross back and forth and back and forth and back and forth across the entire store until my feet hurt. For a compulsive planner and list maker (and an efficient one at that), this simply equates to slowly driving me INSANE. For the size of the neighborhood that utilizes it, this store oft feels far too small and thus results in a jumble of stressed out people wandering aimlessly (due to the aforementioned lack of store planning) trying to find some honey only to find that all too often THEY ARE OUT of honey or bagels or lighter fluid or yogurt. Gah! How did they figure out that the store is out of said product? Not by asking, because god forbid an actual employee be around to ask. Please don't tell me to suck it up and deal with it for the super low prices and great deals...I've done comparable shopping in other venues (read: New Seasons) and spent nearly the same but for better produce, better service, and a far, far better atmosphere. And I've come to think my sanity is worth that small price increase. If the makeover really manages to fix all of these problems...maybe I'll eat my words? P.S. If you're going to bother providing paper bags at least think to provide ones with handles! Kind of impossible to walk home with more than one bag. Mmkay, thanks. P.P.S. I rarely do battle with this Fred Meyer. It's usually just not worth the fight. This FM location is not the closest to my house, but it's so centrally situated that it's the one that's more often than not "on the way" to or from somewhere I am going or I have been, so it pings on my radar pretty frequently, and causes me to go through one of my belabored internal decision-making processes. "Goddamn it, I need some eggs, I'm out of brown rice, and I think the half-empty 3-day old bottle of San Pelly at home is flat." I think to myself... I don't want to go to New Seasons because these three items will cost me $54.35 or something ridiculous like that, and I can get this stuff way cheaper at Freddy's. "Gawd I hate that parking lot, though, and street parking in this part of town is not an option. Plus, all the traffic restrictions and foot-traffic in the area and the proximity to the always-awful 39th and Hawth intersection makes negotiating my way into the parking lot a nightmare. Once I am actually in the parking lot, it's like witnessing the parking competition at the special driving olympics in slow-mo. Good baby Easter-Jesus I hate it so much." So as I approach the corner of 39th an Hawth, I oft find myself rife with this deep internal battle "Do I deal with this FM, filled with all it's chaos and overrun by the mentally challenged, or do I drive the 25 or so blocks out of my way to go to the one on 60th and Glisan (also on the way home)? But I know that even if I can negotiate my way into the parking lot and actually get my car parked, then I have to deal with the chaos inside. It's always busy, and all the shoppers in there seems to have succumbed to the Hawthorne zombie vius du jour - everyone just seems to be wandering aimlessly, blocking the aisles with carts, staring blankly, drooling a little, and moaning. All I need are a few items, can I get in and out quickly? Can I do it?" Listen folks, I am not going to lie to you. This kind of environment puts a serious cramp in my ninja-lightning-strike shopping style. Get in, grab the goods, give the money, run. It can ruin a guy's day. I'm not in it for the "shopping experience", I just need to get my shit and go. So my wife dragged me here recently (thankfully she was driving, so I could just shut my eyes and pretend we were in another parking lot somewhere else), and I was surprised to see some of the cool upgrades to the store resulting from the recent remodel. A new entrance/exit-only system speeds the flow and subtracts from the chaos. A bevy of new self-check machines allows for much faster ninja-like purchases. No waiting for slow cashiers, and even on a Sunday, no lines. And while the parking lot is still a clusterfuck, the ability to enter and exit the store with the quickness of 1,000 silent cheetahs makes the total shopping experience here that much more bearable. So now my dilemma will rage even harder. Do I deal with the negative 1,000 stars parking lot and access situation to enjoy shopping at what is now a solid 4-star Freddy's? Ok, sure. This is my go-to for groceries. Let me break it down for you: Location: Top notch and can't be beat. On the corner of Hawthorne and Caesar Chavez Blvd, they have a prime location for foot traffic. Steps away from the bus stop is a huge bonus, plus extra parking out back. Availability: With two floors, you can pretty much find everything here. I don't have much of a problem finding what I need, and their options are endless. Staff: Friendly and easy to get along with, they don't hesitate to ask if you need any help. I always get a chuckle out of the greeter dressed up like a 1920's zoot suit gangster. Value of Food: Compared to Safeway (ugh) and Whole Foods (no thank you), I know I can get a deal from Freddy's. They quarterly send out coupons for you to use and that really adds up in savings. I've never had a problem with their food and I know I've gotten a great deal. Awesome job, Freddy's. read more

For many of us of a "certain age," Interstate Fred's, Stadium Fred's, and Safeway near Portland State (10th & Jefferson) before being remodeled or rebuilt used to be major sources of entertainment in terms of people watching. They were human stews mixed up of every possible kind of person around. Pretty red and blue lights provided by police cars quite often decorated these stores. In a less sophisticated time, it was the first place that many of us saw diversity (sexual and racial) outside our vanilla suburban worlds. Looking back at it, in some ways I prefer the old stores with all the craziness because there was no pretense. I appreciate the convenience and attractiveness of the rebuilds and remodels now, and there's still quite a bit of the "human stew" element in all three stores to keep some of the fluff and pretense down to normal levels. On the way to work this morning, I needed to pick up a couple lunch items at Interstate Fred's, so to while away the half-hour before my MAX train arrived, I dashed in and kind of flew through the store. I was afraid the store might be super-crowded and slow me down and cause me to miss my train which is why I don't often shop here. Fortunately, it was 8 a.m. and not crowded, so like I said I flew through and found the experience pleasurable. I got a couple of bagels that were straight out of the oven and fresh and warm and wheeled around and got some good cheese. I used one bagel to make a bagel cheese-wich for lunch and saved the other for Monday-morning lunch. I grabbed some orange juice as well in flight. The clerk was very pleasant and was amazed I had been able to get the bagels warm and fresh out of the oven. When I do have time to spend here, I enjoy the Starbuck's venue upstairs and find it a cozy place to read or peruse books nearby with drink cup in hand. They have some terrific sales and it never hurts my feelings to save money. They have nice plants in spring and summer, and the clothing section is great for basics. The home section is also fun to "window shop" in as well. I'm glad I grew up with this store in it's first incarnation. The memories are great fun. The size is occasionally a bit intimidating at times now as is the parking lot, but Fred Meyer stores have always been large. So I'll put one foot in front of the other and keep my eyes open to all the possibilities when I have time to come here and shop. read more

Don't live near this Fred Meyer's but decided to come in to do my weekly shopping . I was excited to see that there was a Starbucks inside the store so I thought I would order a drink use the bathroom and then continue my shopping I walked to the bathroom and noticed that I needed a code . So I walked back to Starbucks counter and asked him could they please give me the code why I Wait on my drink. The lady at the Starbucks counter mentioned to me that Fred Meyers does not give the Starbucks employees the code for the bathroom She told me that I would have to go through the Self check out to redeem the code.. Which I haven't even started to do my shopping in order to go to self check out.. I am really disappointed I feel like it definitely could be handled better and then I'm thinking where does the Starbucks employees use the bathroom if they don't have the code. I did not do my shopping if I already didn't pay for my Starbucks drink I would not have purchased that as well :( Sad to say I will not never be back to this location again read more

The parking is a god damned free-for-all demolition derby waiting to happen, the employees all have that 1000 yard stare that screams: "I really wish I weren't here right now.", and the multitudes of hipster scum merely make every trip to this seventh circle of hell that much more surreal and unbearable. Oh what, no way I didn't write review about Hawthorne Freddie's yet. This is where I got my groceries since Winco is too far for me :P. You can find pretty much everything at Freddie's from fresh produce, milk, chips, vitamin, pots and pans, clothes, bra, undies, socks, patio stuff,crackers, meat, tofu, condoms, stinky hipsters, un-stinky hipsters, your mom, your hipster mom, and the list go on and on... Anyway, they are in the process of renovating for a while now, but some areas of the store are done and *drum roll please*, now they have sushi area like at Sushiland...the sushi train. It's operating during lunch hour from 11-3 and dinner hour from 4-7. I didn't try them yet, but I looked at the menu and the price was decent. $1.10 for small rolls, $1.50 for medium rolls and I don't know how much the biggest rolls are, my shopping companion hushed me away before I started grabbing them and chowed on them shamelessly. Not only that, now they have bakery bar with desserts from Jaciva, Papa Hayden, and other popular dessert places in Portland. They also have funky donuts (like Voodoo, but I don't think it was theirs). I almost got the Cereal bowl donuts (donuts with choco puffs on top), Kids donuts (strawberry icing donut with bubble gum on top) and they are only 59 cents each. To satisfy your gourmet taste, they have olives bar and gourmet cheese area as well. The Deli got an upgrade as well. They still sell fried chickens, but they also sell pastrami subs, turkey sliders, and more. I can easily spend half of my paycheck there....I like all the upgrades, hopefully the price stay the same. They are already pretty high up there, without my coupons, probably I can't afford it. Anyway, four stars for the upgrades! read more

This Fred Meyers is filthy and the service is far below par of the other Fred Meyers in the area. As well, every time I go here they are out of stock on basic necessities that their online store says is in stock. I like Fred Meyers a lot but have been really unsatisfied with the professionalism of this store. read more

When I walk into this newly remodeled Fred Meyer...it almost feels like I'm walking into Whole Foods of Fred Meyers. Seriously, did they walk into one of the large, sprawling Whole Foods, take a look at the deli, bakery, hot bar, and sushi bar and think to themselves, "Yes, we should just copy ALL of this! Those Hawthorne hipsters and hippies will eat this shit UP!!!" They seemed to have forgotten the fact that Fred Meyers is about one stop shopping...and while the aforementioned deli and cafe areas are very impressive, they take up so much real estate in the store that some other departments got forgotten about. They decided clothing and shoes were not important to include in a neighborhood that probably has a lot of need for it. It's not my neighborhood store, but if it were I know I would find it all the more disconcerting. If this were my neighborhood store I would be put off by the removal of those things for sure. Yes, the lower floor is impressive. The building is now green and energy efficient, the parking lot has new rain water runoff garden space (though parking is still a nightmare), but I guess I'm just not that impressed by the changes at the cost of other items losing shelf space. Three food poisonings during summer 2015 alone. June-2015 from a slice of chocolate cake sold in the bakery, bought in a plastic container. July-2015, from an open pan of scoop-your-own garlic hummus in the deli section. And not to let August pass without the third and final night of feverish dizzy vomiting, from a tray of prepared sushi sold on open cooler shelves near the Hawthorne entrance. In all three cases I could taste the mold and threw out the remainder, but it was too late. I have been shopping here for decades, raised my kids on their food, and have never had this kind of problem. Clearly there is an ongoing violation of refrigeration and food safety rules. I watched this place transform from a typical grocery store to what it is today: fancy Freddies. What this location lacks in space has been improved with a larger grocery selection. Sure, they could have made the hot foods/bakery/sushi/olive bar/burrito/coffee section smaller to fit in more non-food sections, but it is nice to have the option to get some already-prepared things to go. I like the fact that the original floor has been restored- it's green! Apparently "green" is the thing with this particular location of The Frederick Meyer. Seasonal produce, LEED certification building, larger "natural" food section and all that jazz. And part of the parking lot has been replaced with foilage! (There's a large bike shelter so that's not a big loss of parking spaces.) read more

I have been shopping at this store for the better part of my adult like. I've been there through multiple remodels and everyone there is almost always amazing!! Until this week. I went in recently to get my groceries for the week. Equipped with a mask I went into produce in search of zucchini. As I approached, there was a woman, Faye (shaved hair aside from a pony tail in the middle). She was blocking the area of the zucchini with two large rolling carts and construction type cones. It was strange. Is this area blocked off or something? Between the carts, the cones and her body, there was no way to access the zucchini. With mask on and at a distance (you have no choice but to keep a distance with the barricade of carts and cones), I asked her if she could make space to allow me to get what I needed. Her response? "Come back later. I'm almost done here." I responded that I was about done with my shopping and didn't have time for her to move on to the next thing.... she snapped back with something like "I won't be long. You can come back. Also, please step away when speaking to me." Excuse me!?!?! I put away the few groceries in my cart and just left and went to New Seasons down the street for what I needed. I'm not particular about customer service. I don't expect people in the service industry to treat me like royalty. Not at all. I don't even expect a smile, but, I do expect them to not be in the way of what I need and at a minimum to be cordial to customers. It's funny, because as soon as I got home and got out of my car, I told a neighbor about my experience. Apparently the neighbor has had similar experiences with this employee and is just simply not shopping there anymore. So that's two customers lost. I understand the cautions that needed to be taken because of covid. Absolutely. Hence, my mask and distance from her.... it seems like this person is just looking for a reason to be mean to customers under the umbrella of safety. I'm surprised she's still working there. I won't be back until she is gone. read more

(The Photo Department) Fred Meyer photo processing is par for the course in the world of cheap one hour photo. What sets it apart is that unlike most corporate supermarket or drugstore photo counters, they generally agree to cross process my film. Cross processing refers to shooting slide film in having it developed in regular C-41 chemicals. The results are highly saturated colors and bizarre and interesting effects. For a long time the cheap one hours wouldn't cross processing, forcing me to shell out my bucks at the pro shops. Now head to Fred Meyer to get it done cheap, or better yet independent Quick Stop/Picture Preview on Hawthorne. read more

Dear Fred Meyer, What is your problem? I mean, seriously, did you drop too much acid in the 60s? Did you fry too many brain cells in the 70s? I really wanna know. I mean, I really appreciate the warm cuddles when you have lower prices on an item than anyone else or you're running a great sale. But then, you push my love away with your constant running out of really basic items or carrying a really narrow selection. For example, you don' t carry 16 oz tubs of tofu, only the 14 oz ones. And last week you were out of peanut butter crackers? You only carry one brand and they were on sale. I just don't get this. It seems like a really common item and my old grocery in Texas had four or five brands. Then, the week before last you were out of turkey pepperoni. I guess a guy dating the really popular hot guy must expect some disappointments. I'm not giving up on our love because, frankly, I can't afford to. But I'm still waiting on a reconciliation sale on chicken breasts, or even, flowers. It's your move, Fred. read more

The Hawthorne Fred Meyer store is going through a total makeover. This is the first Fred Meyer I ever went to, and since it turns out it's the closest one to the place we moved to, the one we frequent most often. Conveniently located at the corner of Hawthorne and SE 39th, and across from the Hawthorne Theater and near the Bagdad Theater, there couldn't be a better location. Fred Meyer, when it's not ripped to shreds (like it will be for the next few months) is a local sort of mini-Super Target. It's got every kind of food you want but it's also got lots of cheap clothes and other stuff. While undergoing renovation, the Hawthorne store even gives shoppers double their reward points as a way of saying thank you! Hey, it's such a funky-cool-ghetto store, I'd shop there anyway. Double points? No brainer. read more

There is a part of me that wants to give this Freddie's less stars, but I just can't bring myself to. The lack of a 5 star rating is because of their new sushi go-around. The price looked right, but the rolls that are $1.10 are tiny and or non existent. The fish in all honesty isn't very good and the service wasn't too great too book. Asked for a water that never came. Another disappointed head shake came when my boyfriend ordered green tea only to find out that is was $2.00 when the check came. I guess I am just used to it being free at other Portland sushi restaurants. It was all very blah. We spent $17.00 and were still hungry and in all honesty I wanted my $17.00 and my 30 minutes back. Overall, I love this store. The renovation is turning out great (if you haven't seen their deli section, be prepared to have your mind blown. They have a new salsa bar that should get this place 5 stars all on it's own. Sushi go-around is a no-go in my book. read more
