The beef sandwich was good and the Panini was OK but the reason we went is to have a salad and it was disappointing at best. If you stick to the sausage sandwiches and the beef sandwiches which I'm sure is what they're probably famous for it's probably great. At first, it feels like a Portillo's knock off. It's clean and large. I ordered the grilled chicken salad. My wife ordered an Italian beef. My daughter ordered a hot dog and fries. Everything came out very quickly. They are setup to take your order quickly (but not pushy) and serve the food fast too. The food was good. Fresh and good amount of salad, beef and fries. But the place felt too much like a chain. Too turnkey. I wouldn't feel comfortable coming here for a lunch or after work to meet with folks etc. There are a lot of families with kids that come in, and I think that's their match. Lot's of room so no one's sitting on top of you and folks regularly cleaning the tables. Kids seemed to enjoy it. All in all, good food and quick service. Just not my cup of tea. read more

I thought Fratellos had some decent Chicago food. I will be honest and say that I am a bigger fan of Portillos, but if you need a fix, this will certainly get it done. We each ordered an Italian beef, and I asked specifically for them to be dipped. I guess they don't do that here because it definitely was not. That said, it wasn't dry and the meat was really flavorful and juicy. The peppers were good. The bread was fresh and the right kind of roll. They also use some kind of different spice combination in the beef that makes it a bit stronger in flavor and a bit more "herby" on the finish. I honestly thought it was a bit much, hence my preference for Portillos. But I would definitely stop in and have another beef if this was the only nearby option. My husband had a Chicago dog, which he reported as being just OK. And I also ordered cheese fries, which were awesome -- crinkle fries, cooked and salted perfectly with a big cup of Cheez Wiz. Much more than just a hot dog joint. I think I even saw a burrito go by me at some point. Though, what I had was a Chicago style hot dog, large fries, and chocolate shake. The food was outstanding and the line moved quickly. They were on top of their game dealing out dog's, burgers, and even burritos. The building was clean and roomy so you can sit comfortably and enjoy your Vienna Beef dog. I didn't know they were in the Vienna hall of fame until they responded to another reviews post. Some friends and I stopped into Fratellos Hot Dogs for a late lunch and were blown away by delicious food. Décor: It's a hot dog stand, but it's definitely a full-blown, stand-alone restaurant. The menu is right out in front of you as you wait in line, the drink machines are "public access" so you can refill your drink as much as you want, and there are plenty of tables of all sizes. The whole place is clean and has a real homey feel to it, it's a nice dining (fast food) experience. Bathroom: clean, well looked after, well lit Staff: From the cashier, to the food preparers, to the order caller everyone was very nice and very quick! Great staff! Food: We had a bunch of Jumbo Chicago Dogs (the classic and delicious!), a double burger (perfectly cooked and tasted great!), a chicken sandwich (very enjoyable), and chili (yum) with some drinks. The food, just like the name, is similar to Portillo's... ok, it's the same, which is wonderful! Actually, it might be better just from the standpoint of the line/wait is much shorter. Value: The prices are what you would expect them to be and therefore you get some good mileage out of your dollar. Fratellos, you did very well! We were skeptical at first, given your knock-offy name to Portillo's, but you exceeded our expectations and delivered a one-two punch of delicious food and great value. Great hot dog spot !! even tho i only had one guest, i ordered enough food for about 4 people and it still only came out to about $20. Very affordable place. I'm not usually a fan of cheese fries, but man -- this place is where you want to order them! i was also very happy with their chili! i initially thought i was going to pour the chili over my cheese fries, but it turned out that both of those items were perfect the way they were separately and did not need to be mixed together. i usually like to mix everything together, so this was a new experience for me. the chicago dog was meh -- but the price was right and the hot dog had a nice snap to it! the italian beef was delicious. you have to request the au jous or gravy if you want any as it wasnt offered to me. great without it anyway! i will be back the next time im in mchenry! read more

Bootleg version of Portillo's. Yes I said it like everyone else here. It's true though. Even the display and pictures on their wall. Old paintings. No originality. Anyways I ordered Penne Pasta w/ Marinara sauce. I thought it was soup at first. The sauce is too watery. The sauce suppose to be thick. I also ordered their Chili. It's too dry. I'd rather buy Chili at Wendy's. It's my first time here but probably my last. Most people like it here. I had the hot dog lunch with fries and a soft drink yesterday. I've eaten here for many years. I love the charbroiled burgers and the chicken wrap. The Italian beef is good but I prefer Portillo's. I would order a hot dog on occasion and I enjoyed it. The last two times I got their hot dogs I was disappointed. The dog was tough and rubbery. The casing on the dog was tough to bite thru. I ended up having to peel the casing off the hot dog to eat it. Not enjoyable in the least and a mess. Not sure if the hot dog was old. The fries were fresh and hot but their fountain drinks always have a "well water" aftertaste once the ice melts. Now today I have stomach "issues" to boot. No fun. read more

They have a great kitchen set up which makes for quick and reliable food. The fries are great and the shakes are too. Want your chili us a bread bowl? They'll toast one up for you and have it ready and fresh in minutes. They have great old chicago sports photos all over the dining room which is cool too. I will be sacrilegious here and state I like Fratellos just as much as Portillos . They're prices are better too! We've only ever done their hotdogs, but I'll say just as good as some of the larger chains known for Chicago fare. We go here when at the car museum. It's small and simple but the perks vs Portillos is free refills which translates to - I don't have to stand in line for 30min to get my kid another drink. And I quite like that. When my brother comes up to visit my parents, he always stops here for his beloved cheezy beef. The beef is lean, peppery and large (my requirements) and they do hot dogs the correct way...with steamed poppyseed buns. The shakes rock. The fries could be better, but frankly I'm not a fry officionada, so don't go by me on that one. The food is worse than a second rate restaurant that tries to associate itself with Portillos by its name, menu, and appearance. I ordered the Penni Pasta with meatballs. It came with garlic bread which wasn't worth eating more than the initial bite. It literally was the worse bread I ever had. The pasta had the effect of being microwaved, but the meatballs were decent. The Parmesan cheese on top was undercooked. I also ordered onion rings with my fiancée, and they were freezer burned. Portillos rings are 100 times better. She ordered the burger, and it was unseasoned and thus it was bland. Maybe Fratellos hotdogs and Italian beef are good. Delicious! I just had the most amazing Italian Beef here. At last, the Italian Beef Brigade is over. This beef is my most favorite. The bread is perfect and holds the juice yet has flavor. It's also toasted which makes it even better. The meat is a good quality and is thin, crinkly and dry. I'm super picky about meats but their's was so good I'd eat it plain. The mozzarella beef is flavorful and smothered in cheese. I ordered an extra side of juice and they had a decent size container for it plus it was well seasoned, maybe a little spicy but in a good way. Overall I LOVED this sandwich. It's my new favorite place to order from hands-down. My fiancé ordered a chicken garden salad with Italian dressing. He said it was a good salad. Everything was fresh. He would get another side of dressing next time, but he said next time he'd probably get an Italian Beef. I also had fries with my meal. They were just out of the fryer and made it the 10-15 min drive home still hot AND crispy! We each also had a pop. Our dinner cost $19.93 and I think that's a great value.
