So much intense flavor! We were lucky enough to get these from the patisserie of Gaston Lenotre in Ille de France while he was in his heyday in the early 80's, just after taking the world by storm with his pastries and candies... and ... I'm so sorry "uncle" Gaston... these are a level above your own. There, I said it. This place is historically, internationally good. This place has tons of them, basically all of their products, all on a table right in front of the store. Before even taking a step inside, I had basically filled myself with jams, butters, and pickles! We ended up only buying an empanada on this trip, although I was sorely tempted at filling my entire pantry with their jams and jellies, not to mention their pies... If only we had a cooler with us... Huckleberry Empanada ($6.50) - Their huckleberry jam is the best of the ones I've tried. Other places in Oregon, on the Fruit Loop and off, have a dried fruit kind of taste or lean musty in flavor. This one has full bodied huckleberry flavor that's quite fresh. It may be due to them using a different variety of huckleberry? Anyways, it's filled inside an expertly baked outer crust that holds the filling in well and adds some buttery crisp, pie crust like texture. I really enjoyed my visit to Packer Orchards & Bakery. Out of the 7 or 8 stops we made on the Fruit Loop, this, along with their farm location, ended up being my favorite by far.

Their bakery, deli, and pastries are slightly better than the competition, and their natural/health food section is much more modern/comprehensive. From the bakery, I recently had one of their "Persian" donuts, which was basically a frosted cinnamon roll, and it was really good. This afternoon, I ordered a custom sandwich from their deli, and it was amazing. While this wasn't the very best grocery store sandwich I've ever had in my life, it was probably one of the top five. I ordered Black Forest Ham and Swiss on Sourdough with chipotle ranch (instead of mayo) and all the veggies except jalapenos. The customer service was phenomenal. I thought it was kind of weird to stand there and order my sandwich verbally while the clerk took notes like a waitress (management, if you're reading this, please consider putting out sandwich order forms for customers to fill out, like a normal deli), but she did such a great job. She was really sweet, too. When I opened up my sandwich wrapper, I saw a whole rainbow of vegetables, which was exactly what I wanted. I should have taken a picture-- it was a very Instagrammable sandwich-- but I was so hungry and exhausted (it's been a rough few days), I just devoured it like a ravenous feral beast. Everything was as fresh and delicious as could be, and the sandwich was so big I could barely finish it. Definitely top tier for a grocery store deli. I've also stopped by several times now for a few small items at a time, and have had all great experiences. I think I may have encountered some expired chocolate my first trip here, but that turned out to be a fluke, and hasn't happened again since. You definitely have to watch prices very carefully in a number of ways. The regular price at Rosauers will often be substantially higher than Safeway, particularly if Safeway has a special. For instance, Califia non-dairy milks are often $4.49 at Safeway, and today were $7.49 at Rosauers. Sale prices at Rosauers can make things more competitive. BUT... you HAVE to watch the prices as you're scanning or ringing up on your own. I now take a photo of the shelf tags on anything with a sale price. Otherwise, I'd say between 30% & 50% of the time, the price in their system hasn't been updated to reflect their shelf tag price. Even losing $1 or $2 a week on the failure to match system price with a discount price adds up. The bad part of even taking the photo is that if you didn't notice but then checked as you were ready to leave means you have to go wait in the customer service line, show your receipt, phone photos, and item, get it written up, and then get your $ back. So take the photos, watch as it's scanned, and call someone over as soon as you see the wrong price appearing. If you shop there once a week and save $2/week by catching their tagging mistakes, that's over $100 saved a year. It holds true in produce as well. ALSO ... watch carefully for which shelf tag refers to what item. They don't always get them correct, so you may see a tag that says $5.99 for an item, but it's referring to the item ABOVE your item (which is $8.99 instead). Caveat emptor is the reigning motto at Rosauers!

Beer etc would be cheaper at the Safeways etc in Hood River or The Dalles but prefer to stop in here to support the locals. Only the last 5 years has it been "Brenna's" but the store has been here for decades and we have always gone in over 40 years for some "treats". Great people working inside.
