For example, the maple scones have figs incorporated giving them both texture and contrast. The doughnuts are sometimes flavored with lavender, sometimes hibiscus, sometimes both, giving them a scent and flavor that elevates the ordinary doughnut to something truly special. Even though I am not gluten free, I often buy the GF shortbread cookies beautify decorated with an edible pansy flower. Trust me, you need to buy this for your next brunch or gathering. Not only do they add an artistic flair to your table, they are scrumptious! And all of your friends can enjoy them. The mini tarts - in various flavors depending on what's in season - are also decorated with pansy's and dried fruit. Just gorgeous ! The lemon tart is my favorite but recently bought the blood orange and everyone loved it. Sometimes there are purple tarts - lavendar - and while the color may throw you off, go for it! So good. There are various types of stuffed croissants, brownies, artisan chocolate bon bins and caramels, cookies, focaccia, hand pies, cinnamon rolls, lavender tea cookies and more! Really hard to make decisions. Luckily I'm there weekly so I get to try most everything. The lavender shortbread squares with half dipped in dark chocolate, sprinkled with lavender, are my favorite. Only available in the cooler months as chocolate melts in the heat, I always buy a box of 6 for $10. They also make a great little hostess or just because gift for a friend. You can also find these at the gift store at Hood River Lavender farm for a treat any day of the week. The owner and baker, Beverly, is the best! He also does everything from wedding cakes to treats for special events, like the Huckelberry Festival. His experience shines through in his flakey strudel with Bavarian cream filling (a personal favorite). He also uses seasonal fruit fillings so look for raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, or the illusive huckleberry to make appearances in the sumptuous muffins and scones. Speaking of scones, you must try them, and at $1 they are half price and on par with what you'd find at a Starbucks or more upscale bake shop. All the quality and half the price, my kind of place! To some locals that are comparing the prices to the local supermarkets, ok it's a little more expensive, but you cannot compare these fresh baked, quality treats with a Rosauer's donut or packaged cookies. The inside of the store is divided into two main sections: the market, and the carniceria. An entire wall of the market is a fresh bakery section. They had all kinds of pan dulce, cream horns, and Mexican pastries. Near the front of the store were candies and cakes including several flavors of fresh tres leches cake. This store smells so good inside. Even the meat section smells good. This was a major relief since the two stores I'd stopped by before this both smelled like mold. As soon as I saw how long the line was on the carniceria side, without having any idea what they were actually selling over there, I decided to get in line. I figured that if this many people were willing to stand in line for it, then it must be worth standing in line for. The line moved surprisingly quick. Once I got to the front, I got shy about speaking Spanish. I asked for two tamales. "De cual?" "Umm.. what kind do you have?" "Que dijo?" She stared at me like she knew I speak Spanish. (How did she know?) I ordered one chicken tamale and one corn tamale. I wanted some of the barbecue chicken, but there was no menu, and I had no idea how to order it. Maybe I'll figure it out next time. I grabbed a guava drink from the cooler and a coconut macaron from the candy section. Both were super fresh. The tamales were so bomb. There's plenty of room to walk up and down each to check out the various Mexican sodas, treats, chips, salsas, piñatas, pan dulce, fruit, and produce. I grabbed a few mangoes for 79 cents, then fresh limes and cilantro, a pack of street size corn tortillas, then quickly realized I needed a cart! With cart in tow, I headed back to the deli counter where they have lots of marinated meat, cotja cheese, shrimp, huge trays of chicharron, roasted quarter, half and full chickens, three different kinds of tamales, and carnitas. When ordering a pound of carnitas, which will make our taco dinner so much easier since they did the work, the young man behind the counter even asked if I wanted to include the fat. While many of the local farm workers favor those sections, I opted to go without it, and I was very appreciative that he accommodated. The other foods looked and smelled so delicious that I couldn't resist getting a quarter of the white meat chicken and two jalapeño & cheese tamales, one pork, and one chicken. As I left the deli area, the smell of fresh bread was everywhere, the trays placed adjacent to entice customers! I selected two pieces of various pan dulce. But it's the customer service that really stands out. On my way to a pig roast, I went to Angel's Bajery downtown, who always has trays of the molasses pig cookies. Not this day! So I did a search for Mexican Markets which led me to La Michoacana, a bright yellow building further up in a neighborhood. I found bags of mixed pastries up on the top area, but no bags of just pig cookies. The bags were only $10 each, but I couldn't justify buying 6 bags just to get a few of the desired cookies. The young lady working that day said, "give me a minute." Then she came back with a bag of the cookies, after taking all the bags apart and rearranging the packages so that I could buy a half dozen cookies. What? Now that's service. So of course while I was there, I loaded up on pantry items, tortillas, bought the carnitas and some fresh tamales, plus the cookies. Her helpfulness resulted in me making a much larger purchase than intended. When I brought the tray to the party, everyone thought it was a genius idea - so cute, pig cookies at a pig roast - and after I told the story, everyone asked for the name and address so they could support this business. If only we had a cooler with us... Huckleberry Empanada ($6.50) - Their huckleberry jam is the best of the ones I've tried. Other places in Oregon, on the Fruit Loop and off, have a dried fruit kind of taste or lean musty in flavor. This one has full bodied huckleberry flavor that's quite fresh. It may be due to them using a different variety of huckleberry?
