Grey & Smoked Salt Caramels. DELICIOUS IG: @sumicraves
    Lauren S.

Come here for their smoked salt caramels... AKA Barack Obama's favorite chocolate caramel! I am really not a caramel lover, but Fran's smoked caramel has changed my mind. This is the best caramel I have ever had and I will never eat another caramel besides Frans. Anyways, I went with my family to the Fran's guided tasting experience. The tour guide was really knowledgeable and friendly. We got to try 4 or 5 different confections. The tour was only $10, so I think it was a great deal since I think an individual chocolate is at least $2. This is a fun, inexpensive tour to do if you're visiting Seattle or need something to do with people who are out of town. Would recommend... and also TRY THEIR SMOKED SALT CARAMELS! Okay done :)

Had a gift card from Frans which was pending spend due to the pandemic. Finally got myself to visit their cute little Georgetown location. Thanks to Covid, they have displayed a their products upfront. They allow only one customer at a time. Hand sanitizers accessible, staff wearing masks and staying on the other side of the display table. Now coming to their products, since I am a huge dark chocolate fan, we picked every truffle that had dark chocolate in it - orange, raspberry, gray salted caramel, one with nuts, etc etc. trust me it was a tough choice to pick an assorted collection. We also grabbed a few coconut chocolate bars and pure bars. Everything we picked was delicious and no wonder they are a hige brand in the chocolate industry. Highly recommend to come and indulge or gift.

    16-piece dark truffles. Yum!

Is there anything greater than Frans? If there is I haven't found it. My very favorites are the dark whiskey truffle and dark espresso truffle, but most of the dark truffles (oolong tea, pure dark, more ...) are pretty excellent. And of course the smoked salt caramels (I like the milk chocolate ones best, surprisingly) are famous for a reason. It's a $$ treat, but a very satisfying one. Great for gifts, great for self.

    Pretty bag perfect for gifting!

It's not like I go to a bunch of chocolate shops, but Fran's is my favorite! I used to stop by the downtown location as they always gave a free sample, and then browse. They had a lovely drinking chocolate too. But alas, due to COVID it's currently order online and pickup only. Copying from their website, we got: 10pc Fran's Assortment - Violet - $25 10 pieces of our award-winning Gray & Smoked Salt Caramels and our favorite dark and milk chocolate truffles. Prior to this, I already loved the salt caramels (learned from aforementioned free samples), but this gave us a chance to try some truffles as well. The box includes a picture pamphlet of their individual chocolates so you can match up what you're trying. Here's what came in the box in order of my preferences: (* = Like it so much I would purchase individually) - [2] Gray Salt Caramel (dark chocolate) * - Raspberry Truffle * - [2] Smoked Salt Caramel (milk chocolate) * - Milk Espresso Truffle - Oolong Tea Truffle - Orange Truffle - Pure Milk Truffle - Bittersweet Truffle Finally, the packaging is just so beautiful. Purple is my favorite color so there is bias there, but they also have boxes in other colors if purple is not your jam. This would make a great gift for your family, friends, teacher, or yourself!

    Yum!

I was planning to go to Fran's Chocolate near Pike's Market, but after having brunch in Beacon Hill we found a Fran's Chocolates store in Georgetown. I'm glad we came here because the Georgetown location is also where they make the chocolates. It's very cool that there's a viewing room where you can watch them make chocolates. I bought several chocolate bars- sesame seeds with white chocolate, dark chocolate with nibs and others. We also got a sample of their famous chocolate covered salted caramels. Yum!

    Yum! My faves!

Aaaaah... Fran's Chocolates! Their gray salt caramels are to die for! And their double chocolate figs -- YUM! I can go on and on and on. Everything in their shop is delicious. You won't be disappointed. This shop is large with an industrial yet classy feel to it. The staff is always friendly and helpful. My last visit on Saturday, I picked up a 40-piece box of classic and gray salted caramels as a gift and a 20-piece gray salted caramel box as well as a 16-piece mixed box. They do sell a 10-year tawny port wine, which is quite decent. I usually drink port wines on its own but it goes quite well with their chocolates especially the the whiskey truffles. The prices are on the higher side but very well worth it!

Did I just step into a museum? No; I didn't. I came to the right place. Fran's Chocolates took the most dedicated approach in elevating "a chocolate's honor." How they showed their chocolate made me rethink what it means for a chocolate. I often think of them as a snack, but at Fran's I saw them as something to be respected. Ordering a box of chocolates reminded me being able to select my own macarons. It made me realize I haven't really experienced choosing my own chocolates. Every box I've received in the past was an assortment chosen by another, but not for me, just for the general public. At Fran's, their box of chocolates felt more personal. We were able to create one for a couple getting married later that day, catering to them and their personal love story. The people working at Fran's were also knowledgeable about the company and the chocolates. They told us some rich history of Fran and how Barack and Michelle Obama picked their chocolates from Fran when he was in office. I learned so much that day. The taste? It tasted like chocolate without all the extra gunk. Have I ever tasted real chocolate before? I thought back to when I went to Japan and had their seafood then came back and had a hard time enjoying California's seafood. Fran's Chocolates, I am afraid will make it hard for me to enjoy any other chocolate. What have I done?

Did you know that Fran is the person you can thank for the salted caramel craze? Did you know that the Obamas loooooove Fran's salted caramels and have even given them as gifts? Did you know that Fran's chocolates are made entirely by hand? You can learn all these factoids and more during a tour of this Fran's, every Monday through Friday at 11:00 a.m. The manufacturing facility was once the Seattle Brewing and Malting Company and a fine example of turn-of-the-century industrial architecture with huge windows and the original spiral staircase still intact. With a huge, long table in the rear of the store and an espresso bar tucked away in a corner, this facility also makes a great space for work/team building meetings. Even if you don't take the tour or hold a meeting here, you'll still be greeted by friendly faces and a chocolate sample. Fran's salted caramels are some of the best I've ever had. And if you love figs, when they're in season Fran's buys the freshest ones to make chocolate-dipped whole figs and smashed chocolate-dipped figs. If you love dark chocolate, try the truffles with macadamia nuts or the espresso truffles. There are also several classy gift boxes and a small selection of non-chocolate gifts to choose from. You can't go wrong with any of the chocolates here, and I have to send a special shout out to the associates who offer one of the highest levels of customer service of any chocolatier that I've patronized. When they were out of their seasonal fig confections, they offered to take my number down and call me when a new batch came in. And guess what? They actually followed through! Chocolate and customer service like this doesn't come cheap, but it definitely qualifies for a Treat Yo'self Day, so do it! If not for yourself, then for your sweetie, your mom, or that person you're trying to bribe for Lorde knows what. (Yes, I said "Lorde." She knows everything, doesn't she?) Bonus: there's a brewery next door, Elysian's taproom down the street, and a pet supply shop, a pinball bar, and a few great eateries all within walking distance. Pro tip: find parking in the back of the building!

When Easter comes there's one place I go to find that special chocolate Easter egg. I came across the first one a couple years ago, before Covid. I picked it up for my nephew and drive it up to Whistler, BC so he could open it. This year I picked one up for my pastor's daughters, and to their delight they found six solid chocolate bunnies -- 2 white, 2 milk, 2 dark -- and six filled Easter eggs some milk chocolate some dark chocolate. The Ivory Filigree egg with father chocolate trim was simply beautiful with its own standing platform. It was packaged in clear plastic with schizzle and a green ribbon. The only thing that would improve it? Fran's creating a vegan version of the egg for some vegan friends with wonderful vegan kids who deserve the same delight. So I've made the request two years in a row now, to no avail yet. But I'll keep asking and still hope for the development. Maybe next year, Fran?

Refurbished from a brewery in brickstone building, this store looks more like a museum or event venue than a chocolate shop! But wait!... you will also be greeted by hearing friendly hellos, taste a free sampling of chocolate, and continue to see the beautifully decorated loft like space. It truly is a adventure for your senses!

Because Chocolate is only as good as the people who make it, and enjoy it... enter Fran's. Something special, like waking up from a bad dream, and seeing the riches of the world... special. So you get here, and it's a huge brick building, something straight out of New York, something industrial and something vintage, so that's what you feel when you walk in... except it's actually modern. Inside the lovely glass doors, is a clean, spacious space, where chocolate is the center of attention. To the left is a wonderful counter with drinking chocolate related goods, just one amazing way to enjoy the pure awesomeness of the Fran's Chocolate tradition. It's creamy, and silky, warm and just yum. You should stop whatever task you are doing, and if they are open, head down there quick, and just bathe your senses in it. To the, you see a passage way, that leads to a small room with windows. It displays something every person would love to see... the chocolate truffle making, in process. Yes, you see the "old ladies" in the back, doing what they do best, making you decedent and delicious pieces of LOVE. Yes, all caps, this is serious LOVE. Are you a human... yes, you will love it. Are you a decent person, yes, you will love it. Are you a Dog? Well... you won't, and actually you are aren't allow inside the shop... and how are you reading this if you are a dog? Back into the main shop, it's a collection of some of Seattle's finest made chocolates. Yes, you may just wonder to yourself, what is the big deal, but when you came in, and got handed a sample, did your soul not cry in joy, just a bit... just a tad... just a lot? Here is the time to make your personal dreams come true. Forget becoming a millionaire, because you don't have to be, to enjoy the fine delights in the case. Just get a few, I prefer the 9 piece box, because it's sharable, one for you, and eight for me. What? At least I'm sharing. So I walked out of here, spending quite a bit of money, but it was worth it, because it's always worth it. What you should know is, there is always space for more chocolate after dinner, before dinner, brunch, lunch, breakfast, late night, all night, every night... every day. Is this a resounding recommendation of a chocolate shop? Yes. Resound all around, enjoy the sound, make good hast, and come here for a taste.

Stopped by near closing time. They did not rush us and helped us build a great box. A little expensive but a special treat.

    Such a great space...

They mostly do Mexican-style hot chocolates, made with all natural ingredients. The menu has a large variety of drinks to choose from. Also, I will warn you, many of the drinks have ground-up ingredients mixed in, so you might be chewing a bit on them as you drink, but I think that adds to the authenticity. It's part of the experience. I discovered Rey Amargo a couple years ago when I was walking around Cap Hill and they were offering samples on the sidewalk. It was very interesting, bitter, spicy, and complex, not sweet at all! It also made the perfect dipping sauce for the churros, which were deliciously crunchy with generous cinnamon and sugar. We shared an iced mint flavored Mexican hot chocolate as well, which was refreshing and perfectly balanced. This little hot chocolate cafe is well worth the street parking!
