Unfortunately, during the pool tournaments here on Tuesday and Friday nights, this place hosts a cabal of witches who run the tournaments. So I'm a local here in Ormond by the Sea. I belong to a group of about 600 journalists across the country who participate in a blog about their experiences. Here is the recent post I sent my journalist friends about my experience at Frank's, and then Hanky Panky's, and the responses I got from fellow journalists: DANA WILKIE writes: How to Get Kicked Out of a Pool Hall So, for years I've been shooting pool recreationally. Typically, that required having a pool table in my home, which I sometimes did, or frequenting pool halls and bars to seek challengers. Recently, I began playing in tournaments at our local hall and, boy, is that learning curve steep. APA rules are different from bar rules, and so I've learned new terms like "ball in hand" and "in the kitchen." I've acquired new accoutrements, like a break stick, a shooting glove, and a pool tip shaper. These are high competitors, these pool tournament folks, and they don't suffer amateurs patiently. Compared to them, I'm a rank amateur. I was schooled about A) not chalking up the table too much; and B) not hovering too close to the table to view my opponent's shots; and C) how to improve my piss-poor, anemic breaks. So it was that I frequented another local bar here in Ormond Beach, Florida, by the name of "Frank's." There, beyond the view of these tournament sharks, I practiced on my own - perfecting angles and bank shots, learning about "walking the dog" (pool slang for rolling a ball against the rail all the way down to a corner pocket) and trying not to chalk up the table. This went well for some time, until I ran afoul of Frank's bartendress, who apparently took an instant disliking to me. Surly and rude - to several patrons, I've heard - she chided me for leaving my debit card behind, for playing music on my iPhone that "nobody wants to hear" and for - you know - chalking up the table (even though Frank's provides abundant chalk for just this purpose). So apparently, according to patrons, I further irritate said bartendress - she is inaptly named "Charity" -- by talking too much with her boyfriend and shooting against him. So, things started to get ugly. Charity's boss, the two of them friends, marches up to me one evening after I walk in, and declares that I was spotted lifting someone's purse the night before. First, the purse in question belonged to a friend and fellow shooter who asked me to move it from one chair to a chair closer to her. Second, while I'm hardly made of money, I'm not yet at the point where I need to pilfer purses. I try to object, but then realize that this owner, her name is Annette, has it out for me. So, I return to Frank's and try not to chalk up, keep my iPhone on silent, retrieve my debit card dutifully, and avoid said bartendress's sometime boyfriend. Only to be confronted one more by "Annette," who claims that there have been "too many complaints" about me and then announces she's banning me from "Frank's." Now I fully recognize that an establishment's owner has the freedom to refuse service to anyone, for any reason. I'm also aware that what went down here was about jealousy, pettiness, and retribution. Regardless, there are other local halls - including the tournament hall where shooters are tough -- but friendly and helpful. In any event, I sort of consider this a badge of honor. I've been kicked out of a pool hall! Wait 'till my future grandchildren hear about it. Meanwhile, the rumors of my apparent transgressions drifted down a few blocks to the new pool hall I began frequenting -- entitled "Hanky Panky's." Before long, the owner there, a man by the name of Mike, had it out for me. So did the woman running the tournaments there, who quickly found reason to kick me out of said tournaments after I beat her a few times. Eventually, owner Mike --a thoroughly messed up and apparently coked or methed up guy -- kicked me out as well. read more

Locals hangout with different bartenders who overcharge for drinks. Went in yesterday before Thanksgiving and charged me 6.50 for a bar well drink when they are normally 4.50. Wont be back! read more

Great roadhouse, prices are just right, and the entertainment is awesome. The bartenders are a compliment to the establishment!

How rude are these people! They had our handicap car parked in handicap spot towed because they saw us walking toward the beach. I'll never stop in to Frank's. read more

Sinking Ship! Once was a great local bar. Then the acting owner "Annette" ran it in to the ground. I was a regular visitor. Each time I go I notice the business getting slower and slower.. Everytime I've been there she's There Sloppy drunk hanging on the bar making a Ass of her self Daily & Nightly. Arguing with her customers Sluring her words and causing drama over petty things.. I've yet to see her sober. But I have had to carry her outside to a cab a few nights.. it's a shame because she has one of the best Karaoke DJ's in the area "Mark's Rockin Karaoke on Fri & Sat.night.. I feel so sorry for what Mark as to put up with when being there. She chases off his crowd. He's done so much for that business to keep it a float. She doesn't deserve him or appreciate what he and his wife as done for her. She's chased off all the long time bartenders and replaced them with a theft who's been fired for stealing from any bar she's worked at.. It's sad.. So save your gas and go elsewhere. Not worth the extra mile. And let's all hope Mark finds a better astonishment that will appreciate what he does. read more

We REALLY wanted to like this place as we spend a good amount of the winter in OBS & were looking for a local hangout within walking distance! Stopped in for a Karioke night - it had a cool vibe & great drink prices but I was KNOCKED OVER by the cigarette smoke! Stayed maybe only 30 mins but clothes & hair reeked so much of cigarette smoke you'd think I was a "5 pack a day smoker"! I think they fail to realize they'd do MORE business if they were smoke free! When will Florida catch up with the rest of the country & ban smoking in bars?! read more

I used to love Franks Place however theres always some kind of drama or clique attitudes going on ... not once in 6 yrs ive suported and gone to Franks Place have I dver been part of events or invites like a family of regulars would be .. I truly love Erica and Kari. Im grateful for the good times ( many) but unfortunately I will never go back due to the owners chronic unprofessionalism and my inability to cope any longer. read more

A trashy establishment at best and I won't be back. They don't know how to treat people or handle situations.

I recently went in to this far and had turned 21 in the past year but did not get a new ID and just so everybody knows they do not accept vertical IDs apparently due to protocol even though it scans and is perfectly legal. read more

Frank is a very personable guy who greeted us and made us feel welcome. I like the beer specials & the live bands. Jukebox sounded great as well. Their hours are 10:00 am to 2:00 am. read more

Went in on Sunday to listen to a great band. Ownership told them they were too loud. Band stopped playing. Jute box came on and it was louder that the band. What a bunch of sh__! I'm done. read more

My boyfriend and I used to go to Frank's quite often and, despite the clientele in the place sometimes, was a fun place to hang out. One night as we were leaving, my bf and I were attacked in the parking lot. The bartender and barback locked the door and watched from inside the bar and did nothing, not even call the police. There is no security and, apparently, the bar and staff care nothing about the customers except their money. Will never go back and will always tell my friends to avoid the place. I would give this place zero stars if that were possible. read more

Went there couple a times a month to watch one of the best band in the area Tommy Mac get there today and the owner tells them they are to loud disrespected the band during their set and threatens to throw them out being a real tight band they pack up and leave but now that they are done playing they turn on the juke box and it's louder than what the band was really Frank you just lost a lot of good costumers I being one of five in our group that left and will never return to bad used to like your place read more
