    Sausage, mushroom, and tomato pie

As a native New Jerseyan and Chicagoan who has spent much time in both NYC and Connecticut, I know good pizza when I have it. And I know pizza hat's made by people who would like to pretend they are making the real thing, but in reality, it tastes as generic as your typical national chain delivery joint. Frank's knows what they're doing with making a great pie. I called ahead to eat in and the pizza was served to me maybe fie minutes after I sat down. The problem was they put pepperoni on the pizza instead of sausage, which is what I had actually ordered. They did apologize, and they immediately remade the pizza. The crust is quite thin, but still thick enough where you can get a nice chew on it, essential for any thin crust pizza. And I am a big fan of that thinly sliced Italian sausage, the kind that looks like shaved gyro meat. The tomatoes were sliced a little uneven, some thick, some thin. I wiped out 4 slices easily, it was a really good pizza. I do live in Newport News, but if I'm in the area, it's definitely worth stopping in to grab a pie.

Frank's Pizza 1 is a SoNo tradition that has been around for decades, four of them to be precise. This Italian restaurant is located in a depressed area of the South Norfolk section of Chesapeake in the rundown Southgate Plaza. The huge parking lot for the shopping center is usually pretty empty so parking will never be a problem though the lot is in pretty sad shape. Somehow in this less than favorable setting, Frank's Pizza 1 has thrived for many years and is a local favorite. They've been putting out some really delicious Italian food for the past 40 years. I've been to Frank's many times but in the last five or six years. I can't really explain why it had been so long but my wife and I were visiting a relative in the area and when the conversation turned to dinner I immediately thought of Frank's. I pulled up the Yelp app and called to place an order for a large (16 inch) Frank's Special Pizza. Ordering over the phone was quick and easy. I walked through the restaurant's front door about twenty minutes later and was greeted immediately. The place smelled amazing with all the wonderful Italian food aromas wafting around the room. My olfactory senses were titillated. I didn't have to wait long as they pulled my order out of the big pizza oven a few minutes later. My pizza was still fresh and hot when I got back to the house. The Frank's Special Pizza is topped with pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, green peppers and onions. The topping portions were generous and when I took the first bite the combination of flavors formed a perfect symphony in my mouth. I loved everything about it. The slightly charred crust, the wonderful tomato sauce, all that gooey cheese and the amazing toppings. My wife and her sister had never had food from Frank's but they really enjoyed it so this definitely won't be their last time. I'm already looking forward to my next pizza. Frank's has a full range of Italian menu items and everything is really good but for me it's all about the pizza. If you dine in they offer beer and wine by the glass. This locally owned and operated business was established in 1980 and the fact that they have survived and even thrived in this location for so long is a testament to their ability to make amazing Italian food at reasonable prices. The employees are friendly and pleasant, they make you feel appreciated. I will be returning soon.

This is as hometown no frills regulars pizza you can get. Now a days(according to locals) its in hood central. I been here for lunch and dinner and there is a different vibe. The pizza ??? ZOMG! It is the fucking bomb!! Serious. Im a giant pizza lover and this is really really good. Worth the trip. Even with the time change it getting dark at 530pm.... it's worth the trip. If you are in Chesapeake area... do yourself a huge favor and stop here. You can watch the guy flip your dough fresh fresh. He atmosphere looks like they been here for a very long predictable comfortable long time. I heard they are moving across the street for 2020. I'm sure the food will be the same high quality as it is now. I'm not kidding. It's really really good!!!

Portions are good. Priced are high. No low carb options. I would recommend a cauliflower crust option.

Frank should not have moved across the street. Food burnt and management said it's the way it should be. Sad times.

I had the la bandiera which is a nod to the Italian flag. The pesto was super tasty, and the sauce you could tell was fresh made. The cheese is even higher quality than you find most places. My husband had the Giuseppina angry style which means it had the spicy arriabiata sauce. It's not overwhelming with spice but the flavor profile is perfectly "angry". This is a true family run restaurant. Everyone you see is family. They treat YOU like family. Welcoming, friendly. The menu is small right now focused on pizza. There are several different kinds of sauces to choose from as well. The pizzas come out super fast and are very large dinner plate size, 4 large slices for each pie. There are plans to add other family recipes that include pasta. The chef/owner is outgoing and checks to make sure you are enjoying what you ordered. He will share their restaurant story--ask him. It's worth knowing, because it was their dream to do this. So what are you waiting for? Go get your pie!

Just didn't pair well Finally the pizza itself - I know some of you are gonna say it's because I ordered pineapple on my pizza but the online menu said "best seller" so I tried it. The sauce is extremely bland & just had no taste or flavor. There are corp pizza places with better tasting sauce. On top of all this, the cost was $36 for one 16" pizza, cheese bread & a can drink - well over priced for the value of food I always like to give 2nd chances so I may try them again if I'm in the area but I'm also sure there's other local spots that might have better consistent good food for the price.
