Vegan AND Gluten free pizza, yes please. We called beforehand, because when you are vegan AND gluten free, you learn to do that to make sure they're not "out" of your crust or ingredients. They assured us they had plenty and volunteered that they were going to be closed the next night for a family event, so if we wanted to get our vegan/gluten free pizza on we should get there stat! That was very nice to be given a head's up. We came during the COVID craziness, so there was masking, social distancing, plexiglass and all the other dystopian features that have been added to all our lives at the moment. They asked if we wanted vegan cheese, which they use Daiya brand for. Um, Daiya brand? Thanks, but no. Ask any vegan worth their weight in vegan cheese and 9 out of 10 are going to say no to that. After our lunch, our Daughter looked up this place and got us here to try their ice creams. They have a nice cozy set up inside and also outdoors for seating. The staff is nice and patient and allow for tastings. Our kids tried a bunch of their different flavors and decided to get the strawberry ice cream. It was really flavorful and sweetness was perfect. I don't eat raw vegetables and if this entree had been properly labeled as SALAD which it is, I never would have ordered it. The lentil soup was good once I put salt in it but the small amount is priced at a ridiculous $7-8. This is a tourist trap. And since I'm now a local, I know where to go for good food. We knew we just had to stop by Frankies during our trip when the first night we saw such a long line out the door! There are quite a few pizza place options in the area, and in all honesty we were heading to a different one before realizing they didn't open until the evening. Ordered a 16" pizza with half-and-half #7/#9 and it was executed perfectly. With the thin, crunchy crust and variety of toppings, the pizza we had is among the best in California so far. An unexpected yet nice surprise during my visit in Mendocino, for sure. We dined in so we were served the pizza at our table. Be sure to make use of the pepper and parmesan shakers. The pesto on the #7 was just fantastic and it reminded me of the college days where pizza was often served with pesto. They could have put a bit more caramelized onions but other than that I was satisfied with what I ate and with how much I paid for it. After the pizza, we got the Banana Split with Black Forest, Black Raspberry and Cookies and Cream. This was an absolutely delectable dessert (why more places don't serve Banana splits is beyond me). The salad came out as a few handfuls of spring mix, with a bit of tomato, cucumber, feta and olive - not at all worth the $14 cost for which I would have expected at least more toppings. The dressing was tasty at least. The pizza was unfortunately dry and extremely bland. It had very little pesto sauce, and the spinach, olives and mushrooms looked like they had just been added to the top and not really cooked. Had to ask for a little bit of extra sauce on the side to even get it down it was so dry and flavourless. I could only eat 1 slice. The service was perfectly pleasant, just disappointing food. There was a small sign mentioning allergies and coconut ice cream or sorbet. I asked about the coconut ice cream and the person behind the counter pointed to the coconut ice cream and said "coconut". It was plain coconut ice cream. I ordered the Pralines & Cream. My kids got Yellow Cake Batter and Mint Chocolate Chip. The chocolate chips were the mini ones. This was a friendly, casual restaurant to get a bite of organic, homemade food to eat. I started with a slice of their pepperoni pizza, which came with a nice thin crust, a chewy layer of mozzarella, and flavorful slices of pepperoni. Next, the falafel platter came with four balls of BAKED falafel, which were nicely crispy on the outside and had a dry texture on the inside. The falafels were served over salad greens, chopped cucumbers, tomatoes, and onions, along with a green tahini dressing and a dollop of rather watery hummus in the middle. And finally came the ice cream, which was probably the highlight of Frankie's! One of their most unique flavors was the candy cap mushroom, which was sweeter than I anticipated and didn't have any distinctive mushroom flavor. But my favorite was actually the kulfi ice cream, which was flavored with cardamom and contained generous chunks of pistachios and almonds for a really nice crunch! Mendocino County is mushroom county so whenever we find ourselves in the area, Cowlick's Candy Cap Mushroom ice cream is on the itinerary. The actual Cowlick ice cream parlor is in Fort Bragg but you can find it at Frankie's in Mendocino. Unlike garlic ice cream which actually does taste like garlic, the candy cap mushroom exudes a sweet maple flavor so is often used in desserts vs. its earthy versions that we are more familiar with in savory items. Since we were aiming for more exotic and hard to find flavors, we split a triple scoop between the two of us with the candy cap mushroom, ginger and kulfi (cardamom, pistachio, and almond). Make sure to sample the flavors before committing as the ginger was more creamy and milky than pungent, just the way I like it since it was just freshly made (but does get stronger as it sets) and the kulfi had a generous amount of nuts with a hint of cardamom making it a favorite among adults. It tasted like some pieces had no cheese on them, or at least not enough to register. And whether that was a blessing or curse, I don't know, because while I like my pizza to be covered in cheese, what little of it we could taste wasn't especially good. Poor quality cheese? The spinach was barely wilted and the olive pieces were rolling around all over the box. It had been a few years since we had been to Frankie's. After dinner, our family was jonesing for some ice cream and at 8:15pm we did a Yelp search and saw Frankie's closes at 9pm. After rushing over with kids and bags in tow, we arrived at 8:26pm and saw two people outside enjoying their cones. We also saw a sign out front that said it was open "11am - 9pm". We walk in and what are we told - "we are closed!" What? As some folks were outside enjoying their cones not sure why they would close early by nearly 30 plus minutes. All sorts of tables in the nooks and crannies of the two story place. Good selection of creamy ice cream flavors, local wines and beers. Relaxing place to hang out in a town that could use a few more places like this. And then there's the pizza, which I found to be a bit of a let down. Crust a bit cardboardy, and the sauce and toppings were pretty ordinary. I'd give this place 3.5 stars if I could, so I'll round up to a generous 4 stars for this review. read more
