We ordered matzo ball soup, corned beef, knishes, and latkes--everything was fresh, comforting, and absolutely delicious. We also spoke with the owner, and it's clear he genuinely cares and knows his stuff. Being from NY and Philly, we know a good deli--and this one delivers. If you're in the Pittsburgh area, I highly recommend Squirrel Hill Market.

Speciality grocer with cheese spectacular and delicious Mediterranean flavors!…read more The final stop on our Strip District Food Tour, Stamoolis Brothers is not typical a place to dine, but definitely a delicious endeavor of a grocery store celebrating their Greek heritage! We were able to sample a stuffed fig, cheese spread, Greek yogurt, and juniper candy! Everything was so fresh and flavorful - I can see why you would easily fill a grocery bag with their products. The olive selection was a spectacle itself with every variety, color, and size that I've ever seen altogether. However, the king of this castle... the Stamboolis Brothers icon... the 235 lbs Carbonelli Provolone!! It looks like a punching bag in the midst of the deli and judging by previous reviews/photos - it is a common occurrence and how they consistently make delicious provolone.

Shelves are lined with canned goods, fresh ingredients stored in baskets to buy by the pound, and for some reason branded tourist soap bars. For the Food Tour, we were treated to the fresh hummus and pita. The hummus was very fresh - the owner even discussed how he made it over the last evening, but the pita was extremely dry and flavorless. He was clearly a true chef and creates amazing cuisines. So it is very disappointing that the store has to morph into a touristy shop. The hookah and culture items make sense somewhat, but the Harry Potter and Star Wars themed soap bars just seem like a gimmick that takes away from the true essence of the store. If you like hummus, you should definitely grab a container of the fresh made. But honestly, I doubt many people stop here based on the appearance.

I had purchased some elsewhere recently, but felt compelled to stop in to see Labad's selection. The store ambiance is welcoming, and the man who assisted me was kind and calm when he showed me several types of halva. I chose the Lebanon Valley Halawa Plain. As soon as I got home, I tried a small piece. Oh, my gosh!! I couldn't believe how much better it tastes than any other brand I have tried. What a wonderful flavor and texture! Just perfect. I highly recommend Labad's.

It's a proper neighborhood butcher shop on Butler Street, the kind of place that had mostly disappeared around here. They do whole animal butchery with meat sourced from local Pennsylvania farms, and you can feel how much the folks working there care about what they're doing. It's not a huge space, just a display case full of cuts, a wall of house made goods, and a small sandwich menu, but that's part of the charm. The staff were friendly and happy to point me in the right direction. The sandwiches are what really got me though. The smash burger is fantastic, a double patty on a challah bun with that special sauce, and you can actually taste the quality of the beef, which makes sense given the whole operation is built around good meat. I also grabbed some of their house made pastrami, and it did not disappoint, tender and full of flavor. Knowing everything is made in house, right down to the bacon and sausages, makes it even better. If you live nearby and don't have a butcher yet, this is the one.

Love the decor in the shop. There were many prepared food options in the fridge, as well as various cuts of meat/preparations of it. We got two sandwiches, the cheesesteak and the marbella. I dont think we ended up with the correct order because we didn't end up with a cheesesteak, but did not realize until we got home. I'm positive that if I went back to the shop they would've remedied the situation, but I didn't feel it was necessary! The sandwich we did end up with was good as well, unsure which one it was though. Very fair prices, and our dog was so happy we brought him home a bone as well! Looking forward to coming back and trying everything they have to offer.
