I have been training with the Order of Isshin-ryu Martial Arts for over five decades. It is one of…read morethe oldest karate organizations in the area, teaching traditional Okinawan martial arts. The organization's founder, Grand Master Walter Cooling, trained with the founder of Isshin-ryu Karate, Tatsuo Shimabuku, in Okinawa, Japan, in the 1970s. GM Cooling was a native of Cecil County and operated several successful businesses in the area. The Elkton Dojo under Master Ronnie Cimorosi, 9th dan, operates on a foundation of honor, respect, and discipline in all things inside and outside the dojo. In the case of younger students, Sensei Max Jones and other black belt instructors are as interested in the work in the dojo as they are in the grades of the students and the school activities they participate in. One of the most interesting phenomena of the Order of Isshin-ryu dojos is that many students train with other family members. Why come and watch your mother, father, son, or daughter take a class when you can enjoy a family activity together? The COVID Pandemic has seen the Elkton Dojo develop robust ZOOM capabilities that have provided students from several states in the U.S. and Canada with traditional dojo training classes, special high-intensity workouts, and focused small group training sessions remotely, up to six days a week. Finally, as a 501 (C) (3) Non-Profit organization, the Order of Isshin-ryu Martial Arts Dojos provides scholarship opportunities for deserving students and family members to cover training expenses or costs of higher education at accredited colleges and universities.

As a family with multiple competitive athletes we have found First State to be exceptionally…read moreprofessional, encouraging, and genuinely committed to balancing the rigor of gymnastics training with the developmental needs of being a child. We appreciate the gym's clear and direct communication, their willingness to address our questions and concerns, and their ability to keep the focus where it belongs- on the athletes. The coaches make thoughtful, team focused decisions that prioritize the kids above all else, free from the parent politics and drama that too often derail the training experience at other gyms and youth sports in general. We are grateful to have found a program that supports healthy, sustainable athletic development for our daughter and have had nothing but positive experiences at First State.

As a team parent of 4 years and former coach I am truly disappointed in what this facility became…read more I feel as though I was sold into the home school day program with my child being one of maximum 8 in her group led by coach Kayla and that is not the experience we received or paid for. The second location became top priority in lieu of the children. We were discouraged as coaches to develop relationships with parents and as a parent I never received any feedback. I do not believe the facility recognizes the responsibility that comes with a full day program of managing children's growth and development leading to strained relationships amongst the gymnasts partially in part to the coaches pinning them against each other as competition. We have decided to go elsewhere and have been happy to have coaches actively engaged, not on cell phones and encouraging the children.

Okimura Shihan and Soofi Sensei have completely changed my life, and have guided me into becoming a more honorable and upstanding human being in our community! Anybody that wants to learn Aikido close to the source should come and train here. Every aspect of Aikido is taught and practiced -- technique, etiquette, culture, language, you name it! At this Dojo, we practice Aikido technique, but we are importantly practicing to become as O' Sensei wished -- through Aikido we become part of an Aikido family! Children are our Aikido family's future! The kids program at ADA is extraordinary. I have seen kids transform into better versions of themselves within a week's time at the Annual Summer Camp! Highly disciplined and thorough, the kids program here will shape your son or daughter into a skilled and focused student; important for their academics! On the other hand, they also practice their Aikido in many exciting ways, such as in cooperative cultural activities and Aiki games. The bonds these Aikido Kids form with each other are priceless and everlasting! Did I mention? All our Dojo events and seminars are FREE for our Aikido Kids to attend, and they get to partake in delicious meals too! Citizens of Delaware and beyond, We Welcome You to Our Dojo, the first traditional Aikido dojo in the First State, and would love to practice with you as our Aikido family! Hope in this life we will join into a wonderful Aikido journey!
