At the time, the Karate Kid was popular and my parents had a coupon to the Dragon Gym, They figured, at the least, two weeks free training and a uniform would be a neat experience. For the next 14 years, the Dragon Gym transformed me into a disciplined, healthy, and focused individual, and helped lay the foundation for spiritual growth and introspection. It's so much more than an activity. It's a way of life. The current head master, Somnath Sikdar, and his partner, Master Lonnie Beck, came up with me through the ranks. After a 20 year absence from the area, I've returned to find that the current iteration of the gym has maintained what makes the Dragon Gym special, while adding different arts and programs and putting great effort into tailoring progression to fit a child's intellectual, physical, and psychological development. To sum it up, there's nothing like the integration of body, mind, and spirit coupled with the ability to focus and overcome challenges in your life. I cannot think of a better extracurricular practice for a child to grow into and be prepared for adulthood than becoming part of the Dragon Gym family.

OIMA Elkton Dojo - A diverse group of students learning traditional Okinawan martial arts while having a great time!

I have been training with the Order of Isshin-ryu Martial Arts for over five decades. It is one of…read morethe oldest karate organizations in the area, teaching traditional Okinawan martial arts. The organization's founder, Grand Master Walter Cooling, trained with the founder of Isshin-ryu Karate, Tatsuo Shimabuku, in Okinawa, Japan, in the 1970s. GM Cooling was a native of Cecil County and operated several successful businesses in the area. The Elkton Dojo under Master Ronnie Cimorosi, 9th dan, operates on a foundation of honor, respect, and discipline in all things inside and outside the dojo. In the case of younger students, Sensei Max Jones and other black belt instructors are as interested in the work in the dojo as they are in the grades of the students and the school activities they participate in. One of the most interesting phenomena of the Order of Isshin-ryu dojos is that many students train with other family members. Why come and watch your mother, father, son, or daughter take a class when you can enjoy a family activity together? The COVID Pandemic has seen the Elkton Dojo develop robust ZOOM capabilities that have provided students from several states in the U.S. and Canada with traditional dojo training classes, special high-intensity workouts, and focused small group training sessions remotely, up to six days a week. Finally, as a 501 (C) (3) Non-Profit organization, the Order of Isshin-ryu Martial Arts Dojos provides scholarship opportunities for deserving students and family members to cover training expenses or costs of higher education at accredited colleges and universities.

Master Brown and Master Godwin are great with teaching kids and are fair when it comes to…read morediscipline. If kids step out of line or are not listening they get chances to turn things around but if not, no time for disruptions. Kids learn good moral values even more important in this day and age. Fair amount of activity as well as training takes place during sessions. Also, can do up beat vibe helps keep kids motivated and entertained. Kids have fun, are entertained, and learn so what more can you want. Only reason for no 5 stars is the parents. Rules are set and provided on handouts but while they are supposed to not take away or distract from instruction that is not always the case. Audience is not suppose to have phone calls, play media with sound on devices, have long loud conversations, interact with students when being taught, eating, walking on mats with shoes, you name it they break it. Rules are rules and should be followed if we want to reinforce the martial arts lessons kids are trying to learn by parents. Again, if only the audience were less distracting and disrespectful towards dojo rules this place would be a far better place for all involved. My recommendation is for same rules provided to be posted visible to all in several areas so people are reminded each and every time they look around.

This school is very family oriented and maintains an educational yet fun environment. The pricing here is very fair for the classes as well as their branded merchandise. The class schedule is also very easy to follow. The daily class schedule for each level of students is different for every day of the week. However, this schedule is the same every week. Once you input the dates into your calendar you can put them on repeat and you'll never miss a beat. The belt testing here is also done well in my opinion. The testing dates are announced well in advance and I've also seen them posted throughout the Dojo. As long as the students attend, participate and learn the different blocks, punches, etc then they should pass their tests each time. My son has moved up to the next belt each time he has a belt test. The new location is really cool too! They now have two floors which allows them to accommodate more classes as well. I really am glad that my son attends Okinawan Karate Dojo! I'm lookong forward to him earning his black belt here one day.

Although the kids were not able to get to the pool this year, the camp was able to make up for the temporary change. The price was reasonable and manageable. Overall, the Okinawa Dojo summer camp program met and exceeded expectations by providing my little family member with a fun, healthy and safe environment.
