A friend had recommended checking out the Foxhole after her last visit here - she said the small town vibe was great and the old fashioned were great. I've always liked the Sparta side of Fort McCoy better than Tomah, as it just seems more like an individual small town versus a big-box thoroughfare. What a wonderful recommendation, I had a fantastic visit. My co-worker can second the old fashioneds! Staff was super friendly and service was attentive. Clearly there are locals and regulars coming in that know each other by name, but being out-of-towners we were still treated the same and welcomed. We sat at the bar (always my preference), but there is plenty of restaurant seating if you come here with a group or with your family. They have a decent beer selection on tap, and the menu can cover pretty much all appetites. I ordered the veggie burger, which was somewhat generic but nevertheless tasty and I ate the whole thing. Overall, I'd say the food here is good - maybe nothing crazy unique, but good, especially with the somewhat limited options in the area if you want to stay away from chains and fast food. I will absolutely be back for another dinner and continue to try out options on the menu. I'd really love to do the fish fry if I'm ever here on a Friday night. But, who needs dinner when you have dessert?! OMG I'd seen some photos of their desserts online, and even though I'm not usually a dessert person, these photos drove me here that night! Wow. The Brandy Alexander is absolutely incredible. It's large but my co-worker and I each ordered our own (and finished it completely). Anyone can make a Brandy Alexander you sip from a cup... but this was like a soft serve goblet of ice cream with the booze mixed in throughout. The BEST. Loved the Friday night fish fry with the salad bar, good stuff. The homemade croutons were bomb. The sides were nothing too crazy, but the fish was delicious! You had the choice of any potato, so maybe I would get a baked potato or something different next time. I really enjoyed the salad bar options. Ok, how do I politely say "You suck" in Wisconsinonian? No, no, no... they weren't horrible, based on my three stars that is evident, but they claimed their ribeye was the bomb! It wasn't! Not even close! It was tough, dry and flavorless. I'm sorry, but it is what it is. I'd like to think this worldly fat old man knows his way around a ribeye, and I am not sure it even was a ribeye. And if they're pawning off lower class cuts of meat as ribeyes, then they truly suck! Nevertheless, let's get beyond that ribeye, shall we? Service was good, a decent beer selection, and it has a vibe that you'd expect from a local watering hole like this. If I lived in the area I'd obviously be limited on my options, so clearly I'd come back now and again, however, I'm glad I'm not forced to make those decisions. The French dip was the worst I've ever had. Just huge chunks of dry, gross, zero flavor meat. It honestly didn't taste like roast beef at all. The dip? Equally gross. Stopped here on a wednesday afternoon. Place is CLEAN, and nicely appointed. Staff very helpful and friendly. While we are not "bar" people, this place is as much restaurant as bar. Stopped by for a dinner while on a trip to Ft. McCoy. Not crowded for dinner, but I'm sure it can get packed at times. Got a burger, fries, soup, and a beer. We found good places to eat scarce in this area. We were looking for a home cooked sit down meal. Went into culvers but saw burgers and we just didn't want one. Should have stayed Special was meatloaf and it was good. Mashed potatoes were terribly lumpy. My husband ordered poor man lobster. He said it had no seasoning and no taste. Drawn butter was not real butter. Potatoes were very lumpy. He said they tasted like a smashed baked potato from yesterday. I told him he should not order seafood unless he sees water. I travel to the area periodically and this is now my go to standard. Salad bar for dinner salads has lots of clearly homemade items - pasta salads, croutons, etc. Lots of very traditional family restaurant type food - all excellent and very consistently so. And also fun, modern items like the Sriracha Chicken Bites. And I love any place that has New Glarus on tap. And the service is always friendly, even when it is clearly hectic busy. read more

Not thrilled with lunch experience today. Took forever to get a few sandwiches and chicken taco salad. (Taco salad was a lunch special, too.) Taco shell was greasy and chicken meat was not good... Taco Bell would've been better! Glad I dont live around here anymore... read more

Went in this past Saturday for lunch. There were probably 12 people in there total-at the bar and at dining tables. There was seemingly only one person serving all of them. I assume they were shorthanded, but it still sucks to wait 30+ minutes for mediocre food. Fries had zero seasoning, probably not even salt. My BLT had a slight hint of bacon. A noticeable flavor of lettuce and a slight taste of tomato. Overall an excellent devouring of the four food groups. Bacon, bread, lettuce and tomato. Great customer service and really great food. I ordered the hoagie and it was just amazing. Hit the spot just perfectly. I recommend stopping by if your ever stuck at McCoy and needing something to eat. They have lots of local beers to choose from. Downside is the place is always dead. I've always had an interest in food, so straight out of high school I joined the army in food service and I worked my way up to running a Brigade sized Bakery operation in Texas. When I wasn't doing that, I ran a field mess hall operation as part of our Battalion operation. After the army, I attended school for Hotel/restaurant management and worked in the food business for 20 some years. The Foxhole Pub is classic rural Wisconsin. Its not a Supper Club by any means, but you get friendly service and great food and drink. If you are not from the area, its a hidden gem and I would highly recommend it. read more
