There was no greeting, no smile, no pleasantries of any kind - in fact, she could scarcely be bothered to speak. The room was OK, with all the usual things you come to expect - comfortable bed, sofa, television, tea and coffee making facilities. Unfortunately, the water in the bathroom was never more than lukewarm which was very disappointing after a day of travelling when I was looking forward to a relaxing bath!! I had a nice conversation with the cleaning staff on the morning of the 30th. They were delightful - all friendly, smiley and helpful - far better than the elderly receptionist. I think Travelodge should put one of them on Reception instead. There's a Little Chef on site and the parking is good - a huge pylon stands on the grass just beside the car park.

The bleak prison-like hallways were the first thing to greet me, as was the confusing yet nonetheless horrible smell that accompanied the visuals. It did not make me feel comfortable. Upon entering my room, the first thing I noticed was the frayed, sticky and warn carpet with chewing gum blobs stuck in to the tread. I pressed the dirty light switch and it illuminated the rest of what was around me - marked walls and surface tops were the first thing to greet me; closely followed by a confusing smell that I could not place but essentially smelled heavily of an indescribable ethnic food. I was particularly cheered up by the booger that was stuck on the wall next to the bed. All of the furniture was heavily worn, discoloured and dirty. My next trip was to the bathroom, which to be fair to them, was cleaned to a decent standard. I never understand why most Travelodge beds seem to have the foot end of the mattress resting higher than the head. It is quite disconcerting when you later get in a lay down. When I finally peeled back the sheets (believe me, I inspected every area of those sheets to make sure that they were at least clean enough to lay down on) and got in, pretty much the whole bed engulfed me as there was no firmness in the mattress at all. It was pretty much a broken bed. One big mistake that I made was revealing the grey, stained, ugly duvet that was wrapped in the hospital white sheets. Another nice touch to the decor of the room was that each one of the four plastic wall mounted light shades were hanging at an angle away from the wall. However, all of this being said I will still give at least one star to the Travelodge because they are one of the few places that still have a Gideon Bible installed in the room, yes indeed, the ninja-like Gideons had paid a visit to my room prior to me. We have a 6 week old baby and it's so nice when staff are understanding of the difficulties faced at times with a newborn. The staff seated us next the fire so that we were warm and away from drafts. The food is wholesome but doesn't really rock the tastebuds. My starter of breaded Brie was done well and Hubby's lentil soup was piping hot (a must for soup!). Both were palatable and enjoyable. I opted for lasagne which was served with salad and chips. It almost reminded me of a school lunch in that it was comforting. Hubby's burger was well seasoned and quite tasty! Dessert was homemade profiteroles in chocolate sauce. It was tasty but didn't rock the tastebuds. It's a little out the way from Glasgow as it's just outside of Kilwinning. However there's a good sized car park and the staff are simply lovely. Great value for money in that we both had 3 courses and a few non alcoholic drinks for the grand total of £25. All in all we were happy with the meal and the staff made it even better.

The lobby and reception area is well looked after but that's where the comfortable and tidy decor ends unfortunately. We were given a ground floor room (114) and the first thing that hit us was how warm the room was! We quickly opened the window but as you will see from the photos, there wasn't much air able to get in. The decor was old and needed a bit of a facelift but more disappointing than that was the peeling wallpaper and poor quality paintwork in the bathroom. I felt badly let down as we had paid around £90 for b&b for what was supposed to be 4 star. We slept on and off during the night but the heat was terrible. The shower had good water pressure but unfortunately the bath did not drain properly and we had to shower with water in the bath. The breakfast this morning was bland, oily and very disappointing. I had to eventually ask someone if I could get a cup of tea after a 15 minute wait. I won't be back unfortunately.

We then needed bedding for the sofa bed and when we came back the bed was made up. Our dinner at the restaurant was magnificent. The staff were all very nice. At breakfast there was a buffet. The croissants were gone. We were fine with that because we got there late. However one of the servers came back 10minutes later with two hot out of the oven croissants. Above and beyond. I would highly recommend this hotel. Rooms clean! And comfy.
