Two grandparents and two 2-year old boys really enjoyed our time here. We were surprised that the 2-year olds got to ride free (the museum starts charging at age 3). We checked out a caboose, a CTA car and then took a ride on the red 1902 trolley #20. The ride takes a half hour including a stop at the end of the line to change the flags and electric pole. It's possible to hop off at the stop and take a different trolley back. The conductor and engineer were dressed in uniforms and the conductor gave an interesting history of the line and trolleys as we rode. Our bravest 2-year old even got to toot the trolley's horn!

For the past two years I've taken my son here for the ghost train at Halloween. For the two weekends before Halloween you can take a train ride to the forest preserve where you listen to kid friendly-ish ghost stories, roast a marshmallow for smores, sing songs, then take the train back to the parking lot. It's cute. I wish there was more to see and do there before and after the train ride. They do have old train cars to look at but it's hard to see in the dark. The restrooms is also a port a potty. Come prepared! If you come for the ghost train, dress warm and bring a blanket. It's cold in the forest!

The visitors definitely were not out in force on this overcast and later wet weekend day. Here, there is no building as such to view artifacts, but there is a small store. When open, the museum offers rides on two different electric cars. Only one car is allowed on the track at a time. What is not stored in the barn is displayed on the hillside both above and below the track end. I appreciated the variety of electric displayed and found the folks here very friendly.

    Trains on display.

It would be great if they extended it to DeKalb; there's already a station built here in town. However, they won't for several reasons: 1. They would have to extend the third rail from Elburn to DeKalb, and they would have to raise taxes quite a bit to do that and pay Metra to come out here. 2. Metra does not want to go outside the 3-county Chicago area(Cook, Lake and Kane) 3. they moved 1/2 of Cabrini Green to DeKalb when it was closed, which caused us to have quite a bit of crime and drugs out here. DeKalb doesn't want or need any more of that. We have shootings and stuff quite often. So, they made a good compromise by making a bus route that goes to the station and back several times per day, It has been quite a blessing to have that bus, but it needs to run more often!

We were hoping to get on at Elegant Farmer and ride to the depot but opted to just go straight to the museum/depot instead due to the ticket instructions. We were irritated for leaving messages that were never returned. If you have questions, reach out via the contact us option on their website at least 2 days in advance and you should be good. They are doing a lot with a little and making it enjoyable for the kiddos. Probably won't return but happy we tried it.

They had trains doing rides every on the hour for a reasonable price and toddlers under 2 were free. Unfortunately, we didn't get to ride because the boys hadn't napped but it was so fun watching the trolleys and electric trains and hearing them go "choo choo" as my boys say. They had reasonable food - hot dogs and root-beer and model railroads to look at. My husband and k agreed that we will definitely bring the boys back next year and look forward to riding the trains! We also want to try the dinner train someday for a date night! How fun does that sound?!

These are not new streetcars but the original operational cars from the hay day that are part of the Kenosha transportation system. These seven classic streetcars are rotated each day and run along the harbor, to the Metra station, back down town and to the museum in a small loop. This is more of a novelty thing/tourists attraction for the most part becaus of the small loop that it travels and is just a piece of the popular Kenosha water front pie which is ok. It cost a quarter for my first ride when it started and today it's a dollar for the ride or $3.50 for a day pass. The official location of the streetcars is the Joseph McCarthy transit center which houses all the street cars and maintenance facilities which is across from the harbor. It's a nice way to spend a day hanging out at the waterfront and visiting the museums, local eateries, shops etc.
