The menu was typical pub fare but I could tell it was all made with love! Some of the dishes we got... homemade potato + leek soup (some of the most delicious I've ever had), deviled white tail, a goat cheese puff bake with salad, classic ploughman's. Most of us got the burger for mains and we did get one steak. Generous and delicious portions, that's why photos never made it to my reviews! The pub itself is very cozy and sits on top of a lovely view with option to sit outdoors in the garden. I would definitely come back. Carole is a darling! Thank you for having us.

Quick glance: + large portion, no-frill pub food…read more+ local ales and ciders + no-mobile policy + dog-friendly + beer garden I came here for lunch based on the recommendation from a pub guide. It's tucked away, seemingly in the middle of nowhere, but it's worth the drive especially on a hot, sunny summer day to take advantage of the large garden in the back. The pub stocks a large selection of local ales and ciders, which is a definite bonus. When we were there, a few dogs from other patrons wandered freely around the premise, nuzzling against our elbow for scraps of food, which I thought was unusual (for a city dweller like me!) but cute. The pub has a no-mobile policy such that if you take a call in the pub, you're charged a pound, kind of like the swear jar. I love the idea - more pubs should do this! The food itself is honest, no-frill pub grub made with high-quality and fresh ingredients. The huge portion and decent price made a good value lunch.

This pub is about as off the beaten track as it gets. Follow the little narrow road until you feel…read morelike you've hit the heart of Hampshire countryside and you'll find the Bowman. In my five years of coming to South Hants I have not known a finer pub. With a gorgeous sprawling beer garden and a nice homely feel the Hampshire Bowman is, at least in my opinion, an epitome of a good English pub. They serve local ales brewed by the Bowman Brewery supplemented by a rotating guest ales and ciders. Their food is considered "typical pub fare" but they often have a twist. I've had hoisin duck sausages over a bed of chinese vegetables that was absolutely amazing. If you don't feel like exploring with your food then their burger is always a good choice. The barmen are always friendly, the food is consistently good, and the pints are always perfect (I've yet to have a bad pint here). The atmosphere, despite the sprawling space is intimate due to the landlord's strict "No Mobile Phone" policy, which he and his regulars actually enforce. If your phone goes off you pay a quid that ultimately goes to charity and to be honest, I've not heard of anyone having a problem with the pub rule. I can't really put my finger on what makes the Bowman such a good pub... it just is and I'm not the only one who thinks so as it is a local favorite. Perhaps it's the fact that the landlord is dog-friendly and provides water bowls and dog treats for walkers and hikers. Maybe it's because of the reasonable price for a good local ale and a plate of fine pub fare. Maybe it's the no-mobile policy which makes the pub and ideal place to have a pint and a good chat with friends or family. Or it's possible it's the combination of all of these that account for the inexplicable reason that at the Hampshire Bowman the pints just taste sweeter.

This 17th Century building has so much charm with its low, oak beams in the bar that you can't help but feel nice and relaxed. The staff add to the atmosphere as you can tell they all really work hard to make sure your food is out on time and you haven't got to wait long at the bar for your drinks. We had a brilliant Sunday lunch there a few weeks ago. It wasn't the cheapest but worth every penny. I had the roast pork and the crackling was perfect! With the open fire roaring, it really was a nice place to sit and relax when its hammering down with rain outside. I had to be dragged out by my wife!!

Having not been before, mum booked a table in the dining room but it was clear when we turned up that it's not necessary. I think you might need to book on Fridays or Saturdays, but during the week you'll be fine to just turn up. On this occasion, I was not drinking in preparation for the 10k, but next time I come I'd like to try the wine as the wine list did look good. Without trying the wine I could not go for a 5* but maybe I'll revisit the rating when I do try it. My mum had the saute chicken and my brother had the pork belly. Served with a generous portion of seasonal vegetables. Both were very satisfied and I think I'd like to try the pork next time. I went for the burger, without cheese. Living in Manchester, where there are gourmet burger places on pretty much every street, and there are some very very good burgers, I am hard to please in the burger department. Well this one was very impressive and I'm kind of glad I don't like cheese, as this would have been even richer with the addition of cheese. You'll see from the photo how generous a portion it is. The burger was homemade, and well seasoned. There were bacon bits in the burger which added a gorgeous smokiness. There were fried onions/mushrooms on the burger which were nice without being too greasy. On top of that was bacon jam - oh man the bacon jam! Lush it was and went really well with the bacony burger. The coleslaw was delish as was the onion relish. My mum pinched a few of the chips and she enjoyed them as much as I did. Overall, am very impressed and think anyone who enjoys burgers would enjoy this. There was a good atmosphere in the pub itself and the staff were friendly and attentive. It's only about 10-15 minute walk to the beach at Pagham and has lovely countryside. I imagine it must be a nice cosy stop off for walkers/ramblers in the area. One of the other people in the pub had a cute dog on her lap, so that's handy to know if you have a dog and want to take him/her with you to the pub. Overall, I recommend a visit.

A lot of different people have handled the place in that time and obviously, certain peaks and troughs go with that. Personally, I feel that it is currently being run extremely well. The bar side of things is fab and the food is tremendous. The prices are a little higher than can be found elsewhere in the vicinity, but I feel that the quality justifies the difference. The Lion is particularly nice on really cold winters evenings with a roaring fire, or on a blazing hot Sussex day while having a cool drink in the large front patio. Low wood beam ceilings and beautiful fireplace give clues as to the age of the Lion and it definitely gives a great vibe to the place. All round, a great asset to Pagham and as ever... it really depends on who is at the helm!
