This 17th Century building has so much charm with its low, oak beams in the bar that you can't help but feel nice and relaxed. The staff add to the atmosphere as you can tell they all really work hard to make sure your food is out on time and you haven't got to wait long at the bar for your drinks. We had a brilliant Sunday lunch there a few weeks ago. It wasn't the cheapest but worth every penny. I had the roast pork and the crackling was perfect! I think you might need to book on Fridays or Saturdays, but during the week you'll be fine to just turn up. On this occasion, I was not drinking in preparation for the 10k, but next time I come I'd like to try the wine as the wine list did look good. Without trying the wine I could not go for a 5* but maybe I'll revisit the rating when I do try it. My mum had the saute chicken and my brother had the pork belly. Served with a generous portion of seasonal vegetables. Both were very satisfied and I think I'd like to try the pork next time. I went for the burger, without cheese. Living in Manchester, where there are gourmet burger places on pretty much every street, and there are some very very good burgers, I am hard to please in the burger department. Well this one was very impressive and I'm kind of glad I don't like cheese, as this would have been even richer with the addition of cheese. You'll see from the photo how generous a portion it is. The burger was homemade, and well seasoned. There were bacon bits in the burger which added a gorgeous smokiness. There were fried onions/mushrooms on the burger which were nice without being too greasy. On top of that was bacon jam - oh man the bacon jam! Lush it was and went really well with the bacony burger. The coleslaw was delish as was the onion relish. My mum pinched a few of the chips and she enjoyed them as much as I did. Overall, am very impressed and think anyone who enjoys burgers would enjoy this. There was a good atmosphere in the pub itself and the staff were friendly and attentive. It's only about 10-15 minute walk to the beach at Pagham and has lovely countryside. I imagine it must be a nice cosy stop off for walkers/ramblers in the area. One of the other people in the pub had a cute dog on her lap, so that's handy to know if you have a dog and want to take him/her with you to the pub. Overall, I recommend a visit.

Perhaps though, you wouldn't expect the quality of food by looking at the outside of the pub. Never has the phrase, "don't judge a book by its cover," been more true. What is generally nice about this place is that they do a few things really well, rather than having huge selections of mediocre tat. This starts with the beer - a choice of four very nice ales, we went for the Dark Star "Hophead" a golden pale ale, which has a lovely full flavour with a hint of honey and elder-flower. The menu here changes often, almost daily, depending on what is available and the chef decides to make. Our starters were ham and apple terrine with a lovely pickle, chicken and liver paté with sourdough bread & homemade chutney, Selsy crab and salmon cakes. All fantastic. Not only did it all taste fantastic but the presentation is worth the price alone. You can see the menu in the photos I've added. For mains I had hanger steak with purple sprouting broccoli - incredible melt in the mouth texture that worked so well with the broccoli and a tasty sauce. Everyone else had fish was being at the coast is a great choice. My youngest daughter had hake in a beer batter which was so, so light and crispy. My wife and eldest daughter had pan fried fish (trout and turbot) with mash. Seriously, I could have eaten all the mains myself - I've not seen my wife finish a meal so quick, ok I kept stealing bits of her plate because it was rather yummy. I couldn't reach my daughters plate so easily. Desserts were equally well presented and equally tasty. The highlight was the chocolate brownie that was rich and gooey it the right proportions. The rummed raisins in my sable biscuit chocolate cake were fantastic. These lovely fruits just kept popping in my mouth. My eldest had the raspberry meringue which thankfully wasn't too sweet, although the meringue was a little harder than I expect it was obviously made in the kitchen as it had a lovely chewy inside rather than being all air. Overall, a brilliant meal. If you were eating this in London you would be paying twice as much as you are here. While you would probably only get half of the meal in London too. This is top quality food with portions you can live on. Go here now before the word gets out.
