Been here twice recently…read more.. First, to meet friends who live locally. The bar food is indeed very good; its a friendly place; nice big garden area - we sat outside; reasonably sized car park (though we did watch a slow motion - literally - car crash as a mini that someone had forgotten to put on the handbrake for rolled backwards into some concrete feature thing)...a bit concerned as I was parked next to it Anyway, very enjoyable and definitely to be recommended We returned a week or so later to meet other friends, it being more or less half way between us....and on our way to the Tunnel Aha...watch out for the beams, missed last time as we sat out...they are exceptionally low!!! the welcome and the food were again both very good Will return, especially as it is on our route, but maybe preferably in the summer...I think outside is a safer bet

We had the great good fortune to be camping at Blacklands farm, which is only 20 minutes walk away, so this became our "local" on the extended bank holiday royal wedding weekend. It's a real gem of a place with a picture postcard look; timber framed with white walls and tiny windows this is the classic old school English country pub come to life. Inside it has kept its traditional character with low ceilings and rustic furnishings. There is a front room which houses the bar (no visible hand pumps threw me at first before I realised it all comes straight from the cask) and another small room with three tables out back which is great for a romantic dinner of an evening. There is also another room in an original "annexe" to the main building which is opened for diners during busy periods; this might be a good choice if you are with children. Alternatively on fine days, such as those we have had this past weekend, there is no better place to be than the lovely garden out front. We were camping with our old pals the Yeoman's, who had their delightful two year old Aoife in tow. She had a ball exploring the garden and getting up close and friendly with the various breeds of dogs, and their owners, who were visiting on a Saturday lunchtime. I do believe a very good time was had by all. The beer, as I said, is poured straight from the cask and is well kept and in tip top condition. Nothing much out of the ordinary in the choice of Dark Star Hophead and Harveys Best and Knots of May which were being served on our visits but hey, they were drinking very well indeed in the spring time sun and we kept coming back for more. We ate here on the Friday evening and had a great meal. I had the Catalonian inspired fish stew with chorizo and fennel which came with crusty bread and a garlic rouille; a big bowlful and very tasty indeed. B had the confit duck on a bed of champ with a garnish of rocket. Despite being under seasoned, she scoffed the lot in quick time and declared herself more than satisfied with her supper. After a morning spent walking we returned here on the Saturday to try out the Ploughman Boards. After a few miles with a two year old on the back I was pretty hungry so we decided to go for a Board each and that was a pretty good call to make because 45 minutes later there was not a crumb to be had. All of the Boards were extremely fine and came with a bit hunk of crusty bread, more butter than could possibly be good for you, some rustic coleslaw, home-made chutney, picked onion, salad and a choice of rare roast beef, cheese, ham, scotch egg or smoked salmon. If you looked hard as you entered the pub there was a note pinned up indicating where they were sourcing most of this local produce which was a nice touch. The punters are a mix of campers from down the road at Blacklands, and the very discrete mobile home site next door, who sit alongside a motley crew of locals. Service comes with a smile and the owner Michael is a lovely fella who offered up great advice and some wonderful hospitality. This is a special pub in a fantastic location and I am already dreaming of a return visit.

The pub itself is perfect when there's a bit of a chill as they have an amazing open fire and in the summer and then a huge bees garden for the warmer months. Best of both Worlds! We always pop in for lunch and a nice pint of Harveys. Last time I was there I tried the Sussex pate on rustic bread and it was absolutely perfect. They also do a fantastic Sunday roast but do get there early as it is extremely popular.

The…read moreservice and food the first year were very good, definitely 4 star worthy, and had me looking forward to a return visit. Disappointingly it didn't quite meet expectations, hence the 3 overall. Nothing was truly terrible during my second visit, but there were a few areas that I feel could be improved. Although not incredibly expensive, prices are sufficient for me to expect better than average food and service (that said my brother thinks I've been living in the USA too long and my service expectations are too high for the UK...) I ordered a special for the day we visited, topside roast beef with seasonal vegetable accompaniments. The beef was cut rather thick, which is either generous and rustic or, as my grandmother with extensive food service would have said, completely wrong (beef thin, lamb thick, pork in between...) I also would have preferred the meat a little rarer, but despite the apparently longer cooking time it was tender and flavorful. The vegetables were generally good; could perhaps have been cooked a little less for a firmer bite but that's certainly open to a range of preferences. The Yorkshire pudding was overly-crispy for my tastes, and with the gravy already poured (a separate boat would have been nice) was hard to rescue. The one item that was really disappointing though was the courgettes (others in my party with those on there plate agreed). They appeared to have been cooked in an olive with strong vegetal/pungent/sharp/bitter tones to it. It would seem the oil was not hot when it met the courgettes and they have a tendency under such circumstances to soak up oil leaving them tasting rather funky. One wonders if they were taste tested in the kitchen... My wife ordered a risotto of some kind which she felt was lacking salt (unusual for my wife so probably true). Desserts were well received -- didn't have one myself but they looked good and were said to be good and tasty. Service seemed well intentioned but I found it odd that we had all three of the waitresses visit us for different things at various times -- this did not appear to enhance the level of service but rather to leave them all confused as to what stage of the meal we were at. We received multiple queries on things such as whether or not we had ordered drinks, starters, dessert, etc.

The outside is festooned with hanging baskets, and the interior has an appropriately 'Olde Worlde' feel, with lots of nooks and crannies. The garden at the back is equally attractive, and a lovely spot for a summer pint. It does good traditional pub food, a changing selection of real ales (including Harvey's). There's also en-suite accommodation, although I've not stayed here. The main downside is that it is often chock-full of tourists, and it's pricier than other pubs in the area. But then, you're paying for all that greenery!

To top it off, there's a small stream at the bottom of the garden which if your lucky, you'll see the local swans gliding by. The food is excellent here. I had the ploughmans last time as it was too hot for anything else but the chef does have some impressive specials depending on the season. They offer rooms here too if you've had one to many beers to drive. £60 for a single room which, considering the surroundings, is a bargain!

We decided to visit The Three Crowns after a recommendation from a friend. The setting is idyllic, with beautiful views over the village green next door and a quaint village. We ordered our food from the two course menu for just 15GBP per person, I had the gammon and fries - outstanding! However they make that sauce, delicious! I also ordered a Pimm's which was made extra strong and extra large after they discovered I live in America and don't get to experience it regularly. The garden outside was stunning, a real gem of a pub. Take your time and visit here, you won't regret it. The staff were fantastic, food was brilliant and the drinks plentiful. A 5* British Pub!

The girlfriend spotted the Three Crowns in the centre of Billingshurst as we drove through. A quick U-turn and we were soon parked up As it turned out, we had forgotten that it was Father's Day and the tables inside were fully booked but the cheerful staff offered us a table in their rear garden. Well, another win purely by coincidence. On that sunny day, the huge garden was THE place to sit. There were even some chickens in their run at the back of the garden for the kids (and me) to visit and play with A couple of sharing boards seemed a reasonable choice for the 3 of us just to hold out til the wedding dinner. Well, we had forgotten that in the West Sussex countryside, portions are a tad more generous than in London and the 2 boards came laden and groaning with food. I especially loved the seafood board with fresh large prawns, smoked salmon, poached fish and seafood salad. A spritz of lemon and you could imagine being a few miles down the road at the sea. The charcuterie board was similarly replete with fine cuts of meat. All accompanied by herculean sized pieces of bread, so much so that we didn't even finish one portion of bread between us It was a great start to the day and highly recommended if you're in the area
