For a smaller regional airport, it honestly made a very good impression on us. One thing I found interesting is that despite being called an "international" airport, Austin Straubel mainly serves regional and domestic travel throughout the Midwest, though it does occasionally handle international charter and seasonal flights. The airport itself is named after Austin Straubel, the first Brown County resident killed during World War II, which adds a small historical layer many travelers probably don't realize while passing through. The airport was clean, organized, and extremely easy to navigate. In many ways, it reminded us a lot of our home airport in Sioux Falls -- Sioux Falls Regional Airport, or FSD as locals usually call it. Smaller airports like these may not have the giant terminals and endless amenities of places like O'Hare or DFW, but honestly, there is something refreshing about being able to get through security quickly, find your gate without walking five miles, and not feel completely overwhelmed by crowds. Traffic inside the airport was fairly light during our visit, and there weren't many planes moving through at the time, which made the experience feel relaxed and low stress. There honestly isn't a dramatic amount to say about the airport itself, but perhaps that's part of the compliment. Everything simply worked smoothly. And after enough years of travel, my husband and I have learned to deeply appreciate airports that make life easier instead of harder.

Crispy with big chunks of bacon and bleu cheese. Also had their house made sausage Tuesday special. Very yummy with garlic and sun-dried tomatoes right in the middle. If you need GF options they have em. Didn't have room for dessert but the selections sounded divine. Was a very comfy cozy atmosphere. Not loud and obnoxious where you can't hear your table mates. Seemed like the parking lot was fuller than the crowd let on but found out many folks were attending a show at the PAC so probably walked from there. I will take every future opportunity to go back to this place. Mwah!

One of our party forgot his ID and although everyone, including the waiter, agreed he was clearly of age, it's a house rule apparently that ID must be present. No big deal. Rest of our drinks arrive and we let him have a sip to try because the cocktails were decent. The waiter saw and screamed at him before waddling away to tattle on us to the manager. The other staff stared in horror but also in a way that said this wasn't the first time this guy lost it. Even the manager looked so embarrassed he had to deal with it. Manager started to say he would let us stay when the waiter screamed no and yanked our card from us. It was so pathetic watching a grown man in his 40s throw a huge tantrum. Manager intervened by taking the card away from the waiter and comped everything we had ordered while the waiter was pouting and sulking next to him. We suspect the waiter was homophobic because the reaction was so absurd and unnecessary that it has to be either homophobia and/or a mental health problem. Our friends swear their city is lovely but also acknowledge what happened could have been hate-motivated and they're sad that this just reinforced what many people think about small town Wisconsin. We went to a nearby establishment where we were treated like humans (and they served us clearly upper 30s men without having to check our IDs). On the plus side, we tip very well and are glad this waiter is not going home with an extra $100. Hopefully this restaurant knows what they need to do with this unstable staff member for the safety and comfort of their diners and other staff.
