That section alone will take you 1.5-2 hours. The last 5-6 miles are unpaved and combo with the narrow roads, with a small vehicle it can be difficult and most importantly nerve racking to navigate. It is not for the faint of heart. One guy who came in on an off road vehicle said to me "I can't believe you made it here" and another person I talked to on my last day said her mother freaked out so bad they were trying to find an alternate way home. There is a lake (obviously) and you can catch small bass. A man we talked to said there is trout earlier in the year when it is colder. There are no running toilets or showers so outhouse only. The yellow jackets are NO JOKE. I woke up the first morning and thought they were swarming my tent but no - they were swarming our table. I would say easily 30 yellow jackets at all times around our table until sunset and if I wanted to cook anything with meat, I'd just give up because the second I opened it, 30 bees would be all over it. The atmosphere is very mellow at this campground, which is perfect for us. I love the vintage vibe of the campground as I have a vintage trailer. The staff checked in on us to see that everything was well through our time there and were glad to direct us to local sites that we were interested in seeing. Also, about two minutes away there is a Walmart so it is super easy to get anything you need or have forgotten. Made new friends in the campground and had dinner together which was really nice as well. Glad we finally made it and we will be back.

We paid for a campsite expecting a reasonable night's sleep and instead spent most of the night awake listening to our neighbors. Because we got virtually no sleep, we made the decision to leave a day early. When I texted the host, I wasn't even asking for a refund--I simply requested a complimentary night for a future stay as a goodwill gesture. The request was immediately denied because of their "no refunds for early departure" policy. The issue isn't that we left early. The issue is that the campground did not provide the quiet, enjoyable experience that guests are paying for. Hiding behind a policy while ignoring the reason a guest is leaving is poor customer service and shows a complete lack of concern for the guest experience. If you're looking for a peaceful campground, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere.

The town of Chester is about 10 miles away if you need a store for something. The campgrounds are close together. Which we don't really like. Each has a fire ring and grill to cook on. Tons of wood to scrounge for a fire but you'll need a burn permit which are free and good for the entire year. Be sure to secure your food as those cute but pesky chipmunks and squirrels will help themselves. We came before the season was open and it was wonderfully quite.

It wasn't too far from the restrooms and trash either. The drinking water was just across from us and compared to a state park or national park campground, it was pretty quiet. There is a paved hiking trail to Lake Almanor just across the entrance from the South Campground. On an early morning, I took a jog with my 1-year-old while the others were still snoozing and the weather was just perfect at 8:30 AM. Although I found that even for early July, it can get a bit cold in the early morning (1 AM-8 AM) in the tent. So pack extra blankets. There are no showers here, so you will have to find them somewhere else. Overall, this is a great spot to camp if you plan to go to Mount Lassen National Park or surrounding areas. There is a lot of space for the whole family at your campsite.

My girlfriend and I were looking for a quiet, serene, not as heavily traveled or crowded beach to soak our toes and spend some quality time together and this was the perfect setting for that! The views are amazing. You don't have to walk for miles and climb down some jagged hill. It's a nice pleasant trail out to the water, easy parking access and clean restroom facilities nearby if needed. I can't wait to return here for some more -- Vitamin Sea!

I cannot comment on how beautiful this lake would be when full, I can't wait to come back in a few years after this drought and see this place in its glory! I do know people are still catching fish and enjoying the beauty of nature here. We met a couple of very friendly geese and an old fisherman who lived near here and shared fishing stories as well as facts about the lake and some of the rocks I was finding...
