For years, my husband and I ate at Fortune Buffet frequently and were always pleased. I'd estimate that we went at least two or three times every month. Fortune Buffet was recently remodeled and new prices / policies have been established. Earlier today, we went to have lunch and were told that the purchase of a beverage is now mandatory. Even water and hot tea are no longer free. At the cash register, there are now two signs: one gives the price for the buffet and another informs customers that an additional beverage charge will automatically be added. As a matter of principle, I will not pay $1.69 (plus tax) for a glass of ice water. Before I'd do that, I'd prefer to give the money to a charity! Whoever decided upon this mandatory beverage charge was certainly foolish! We left without eating! read more

don't go here. all of the food was either lukewarm or dried out. the only good thing was the wonton soup and steamed mushrooms. the salt and pepper crab and steamed clams were tasteless, and the sushi was warm (when it was raw fish, yuck). the cookies and rice crispy treats in the dessert section were too hard to bite. $75 for 3 adults and 3 kids, and we probably ate $4 a piece. i felt the soul-crushing stares of the "cooks" when i was taking too long to choose between the few types of sushi. though my waitress was very polite, i still do not recommend going here :) read more

New management as of 5/21/2018. Don't let the grungy strip-mall exterior fool you. We enjoyed a great meal together here on a Monday night - usually not the best night to try a buffet. But the food was all fresh and well prepared. Better than the average Chinese buffet. The dining room is newly remodeled with a clean, modern feel. When we arrived we were informed that the price is all-inclusive from beverages to dessert, and unlike most Chinese buffets there is coffee available at the self-serve beverage bar. Sushi was nicely presented and fresh. The hibachi grill where you can select meats, veggies, noodles, etc, and have them cooked to order had a nice variety of vegetables, although the small cooking space available to the chef made preparation somewhat slow even though the restaurant was not crowded. The steam tables have the usual variety of Chinese buffet standards. The seafood cakes were especially good. On the fruit bar there were many fresh fruits including mango slices. Mmmm. Finally, the dessert selection was far better than most Chinese buffets including something that looked like rice-crispy treats, but was made with Chinese noodles and peanuts and was simply delicious. The soft-serve ice cream was creamy and a good quality. The staff were friendly and helpful. The fact that they've now been open a few weeks may account for the improvement over some of the earlier reviews. We eat frequently at Chinese buffets, and this is a good one. read more

I'd like to point out that the new "pay ahead" option can work in the customer's favor; previously, if you arrived towards the end of "lunch", but it was "dinner" by the time you left, you might be charged the higher dinner price; now you're charged according to when you arrive, not when you leave. And you can leave before paying if you don't agree with their prices--like over what height constitutes a child-- instead of arguing after you've eaten, when you really don't have much leverage. Personally, I prefer paying upfront instead of waiting til everyone's done eating (which isn't always at the same time), then trying to get someone's attention and waiting for a check, then maybe waiting for them to come back and take your payment, then waiting for them to bring back your card or change. Especially if you'd like to leave quickly after eating, if you're on a lunch break or something, or with a group of people who arrived separately--you can just leave without fussing over splitting the check or feeling like you're rushing your companions to finish. The drink charge is a little unusual but it's still reasonable (and cheaper than their drinks used to be, which was $2 or $2.50, I think). If you don't want to pay for a drink, you could get a container to go. I like their food. I liked most of it before the renovation, and I like it now. There are several specific items--like dumplings, wontons, and lo mein--that I DON'T like at other Chinese places, but do like at Fortune Buffet. The roast pork and chicken are so tender. They do seem to have taken away some items, but replaced them with more sushi and deserts, so I still left uncomfortably full, haha! read more

This was the nastiest restaurant I've been to. If I could leave no stars I would, the service was terrible. The food was cold and the ice cream was sour, as if the milk expired weeks ago. After hunting down a waitress to tell her about the sour ice cream, she said sorry and left. Then we had to find another waitress who gave my kids an ice cream bar that was freezer burned. And the bathrooms look like truck stop bathrooms and the walls and ceilings are disgusting. read more

I've been to the buffet multiple times but this time time I found a cockroach in my plate, and I was disgusted. I told the waitress and they only took off the tax on my bill. Sure to say I will never be coming back here ever again. read more

I waited a while for their re-opening and I liked how they changed the establishment, their food tastes the same as before and I guess that's good. But I stayed for an hour and a half and noticed a pattern in how they delivered the tables to the customers. African Americans and Latinos were seated at the back and away from the food bar, while all white people were seated near the food bar and together with others. I thought it was paranoia or simple coincidence, but after a while and even though the tables were empty I kept seeing the same pattern. my friends did not believe me until we saw two black people who were accommodated until the last table, when there were many others in front that were empty. Why? I do not know, that's what I saw in the hour and a half that I stayed in that place. I do not recommend it, since there are better restaurants, but there are no more Chinese buffets in the area, so if you want to experiment it's your own decision; once was enough for me. I hope that if they can read this, they also change that method. read more

Don't waste ur money at this dump. My bill came out $54 because my 11 and 12 year old nieces are tall and count as adults yet I'm under 5 feet and I count as an adult too. I have never been to a restaurant as ridiculous as this one they had to take their shoes off in this filthy place to see if they hit the 5' mark which they do have measured marks on the wall btw. The food is NOT worth $54 for that I would have taken my family to a quality restaurant or if I wanted cheap food I would have ordered in. Nasty food nasty people don't go there! read more

Two stars, would be 1 but we had some good laughs so I'm in a good mood. Came here with my family for Father's Day on my uncle's suggestion that it was decent and not as bad as it used to be. He was wrong. The food was okay, but much of it was tough and seemed as if it had been sitting out for hours. Our biggest complaint was the cleanliness, or lack thereof. The first thing we noticed was that our feet were sticking to the carpet. I thought I had either stepped in gum or was imagining it, until my girlfriend told me her sandals kept sticking. She almost lost one and fell down. The highlight of the evening was the state of the bathroom. My dad came out first and said, "I wouldn't use the handicapped stall if I were you." Someone had clearly either taken a dump on the seat/floor or wiped some of it on both. I was going to post a picture here, but to their credit it was cleaned up by the time we left. The third thing we noticed was a gentleman who decided he would be more comfortable without his shoes on. Yes, he was walking around in a public restaurant in just his filthy socks. His socks were so dirty in fact that some of us observing thought he may have been wearing brown sandals. He was not. The icing on the cake to our evening out had nothing to do with the restaurant, but was a fitting end to the night. The car parked next to my aunt was filled with about 20 empty McDonalds soda cups piled in the backseat. My brother, Mom and I came here for lunch because we had a coupon. All three of us love Chinese food, and we have eaten in all of the best Chinese restaurants close to our house. Usually when we go to a place that we have never eaten in before we use Yelp but we just for got this time. That was a huge mistake. We went in the restaurant and the floor was filthy, already my brother was making faces at the quality of the place. We got a table and went for the buffet. Whenever I go to a Chinese restaurant, I get egg drop soup. I had never tasted a bad egg drop soup until that day. It was salty and made me feel sick. Next to me, my brother was eating the noodles and he said he hated that as well. My mom took one bite of the salmon said complained that it was too chewy and stale. The only thing we could eat was the jello and the fortune cookies. When the best part of a restaurant is the fortune cookies, that really says something about the place. Well tonight we all went in and the owner said put your daughter down to my son in law, he said she's 1, are you really charging for a 1 year old? I can see my son he's 3, but my daughter doesn't eat much. Maybe jello. She said yes we charge by height, so he said really? if you charge for a 1 year old I'm leaving.. Went to this buffet last night after about 2 years of not going there and the food was AWFUL. The food was either cold, dried out or too crispy and flavorless. 4 people and we only ate one plate each and not even a full plate. I hated paying the check. Yes you will have enough to eat. Decent Price at a simple place. Some food is very oily, some is odd. Some is too cool for what it is and when it should be hot. Some of the sushi, the rice was stale or crunchy when should be fresh and soft. BEWARE this is not told or mentioned anywhere I could see but if you order a soda you will be charged $1.69 each and with a big group this can add up quickly and be an unpleasant surprise. I was just charged a surprising additional $12 because of this, and when I questioned it, oh well, too bad. This place isn't bad. Fortune Buffet as it is now called located in wharton about a mile or 2 from rockaway mall, Isn't that great either however. I'm pleased with the price. 17$ to feed 2 people as much as they want is a good deal in my book. So let's break it down. Pro: It's a buffet, you can stuff yourself on a budget. Con: The food is adequate at best. Nothing in the entire buffet jumped out at me as standing out from any other Chinese place I've eaten. Pro: There is many, many different things to choose from. Including a dessert cart seafood cart american and asian carts. It really is a massive selection. Con: I was there about 11:15 am, According to their hours they had opened at 11. Why the was a lot of the food cold? By the time I got my plate back to the table, it wasn't even room temperature it was just flat out cold. How? The main question is, will I go back? If I'm in the area id be willing to head back. Especially if I find myself real hungry and almost broke. It does seem to be a beacon for seniors also, That part is 100% true. It's average. read more

Stopped in at 5:30 pm dinner hour on a Monday. Half of the "hot" food was very old, cold and hard because it had been sitting for many many hours.. The sushi was about average fair, somewhat old. Expected fresher food because of the change from lunch to dinner hour. Seems that timing is everything here, if you don't catch it soon after it comes out from the kitchen you are going to be disappointed in it's quality. Came for dinner and the food was ok. Have had better at other buffet's, yet still ok. Our waitress seated us and got our beverages right away and told us to enjoy. Not too much of a wide variety, but the whole time we were eating a man who looked like he worked there was on break and was SO loud. This place is filthy, the carpet to way past its use, the floor thats isn't carpeted is so greasy the hostess warns you to watch your step. The food is terrible! I cant stress enough how bad the food is. The staff is clueless. Went at the start of dinner; about 5pm on a Friday. There was little food in the trays; as though it may have been left over from lunch. The food that was available was either dry or extremely greasy. All fish or seafood tasted terribly fishy. I had a dumpling I think was rancid because when I bit into it it tasted sour; I spit it out onto my plate. My kid is a mac and cheese lover; as most kids are. She took 1 bite and was disgusted. Needless to say we only made the first initial trip to the buffet and we were done; didn't even want dessert at this point. This was a big waste of money. When I told the waitress the food was the worse Ive ever eaten she looked at me like I had 3 heads. When she gave me the check and I was signing my credit card receipt she stood over me watching; I feel she was looking to see if I was going to leave a tip. I did leave a tip because I know its not there fault the food sucks. I did however expect her to say something to the manager that I was unhappy; but she never did. Its my guess she may not have understood what I was talking about. When leaving I approached the hostess and voiced my disgust with the food; all I got was a blank stare, no apology, no nothing.
