We visited Fort Selden and then stopped for some wine here. The owners were lovely and the wines were all smooth. This is a small vineyard. If you want something unique, stop here. You will not regret it.

It was a little windy when I visited in March, but the scenery more than made up for it. I arrived a bit late for a full tasting since they stop tastings after 4 PM, but the staff was still kind enough to let me sample four different wines. I ended up enjoying them so much that I bought three bottles to take with me--two reds and one sparkling. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. Honestly, everyone I met in Las Cruces seemed that way. At one point, a local woman nearby even asked if it would bother me if she smoked. I thought that was such a polite and considerate thing to do. Between the mountain backdrop, the relaxed atmosphere, and the friendly people, it was a really pleasant stop. I'd definitely recommend checking it out if you're in the area.

The highlight for us was the Petit Verdot, a fantastic New Mexico wine that we absolutely loved. The ambiance is beautiful, the venue itself is amazing, and it wasn't overly crowded, which made it easy to relax and enjoy the evening. The live music was outstanding. Moonshine Railroad from El Paso played, and they were incredible. They performed a mix of old and new country, and every song was a perfect two-step or waltz. Super danceable and so much fun. The winery should really advertise this band more because they were a huge part of what made the night special. Unfortunately, the service didn't match the setting. After our waiter brought our bottle of wine, he never returned. We ended up having to ask another waitress to put in our dessert order. He left for the evening without checking back with us, and we didn't even know he had left. Also, other reviews are accurate about needing better wait staff at the back area where the live bands play -- that process could definitely be improved. Our dessert (a brownie with ice cream) tasted burnt, which was disappointing after such a strong start with the wine. Despite the service issues and dessert mishap, we'll definitely return but next time we'll just order directly from the bar. The wine, atmosphere, and especially the music made it worth it.

Sombra Antigua is where you wanna go to have a fun time. No judgments here, just a relaxing good time. While visiting New Mexico, I decided to check out the wine tasting scene. Admittedly, my expectations for wineries outside of my home state of California are generally quite low. Not because I don't think that there is better wine out there, but simply because I don't want to quickly compare everything to what I already know. Coming here, I knew it wouldn't be anything like the wineries back home. But that's honestly what I enjoyed most about Sombra Antigua. I stopped by solo without a reservation, and literally left with newly made friends that I hung out with for the rest of the night and even the next day. I mean, the people are so friendly, welcoming, and trustworthy here. There was live music and I sat and watched. 15 minutes later I was actually up and DANCING with a group of people. Shayla dancing with unknowns?! At MY big age? In this new era?! It's a rarity, I tell you! But, I did it. And it was SOOO much fun. Not to mention, the wine was actually pretty damn tasty. Yep, I said it! It was tasty. I enjoyed their Viognier, Demi sec, Barbera, and sweet cider beer. Is it the best wine that I've ever had in my life?! No, not at all. But, it's still good for the occasion and extremely affordable. They've got a large list of both wine and beer, and it's $5 for 5 tastes. BRING THOSE PRICES BACK TO NAPA!!! I know, I know... it ain't gonna happen. But, at least it's still thriving out here. The family who own and operate this winery is wonderful. They were right there dancing and drinking with everyone else. I love the family feel here. This is a winery where everyone know one another. And if they don't know someone, they're gonna get to know you and embrace you. I instantly felt embraced. What a warm and fun little gem this place is! If I'm ever back in this area again, a visit to Sombra Antigua will be first on my to-do list!
