So its not like I had much choice here as I was heading South on I-95. The tunnels transit underneath the Baltimore harbor. The tunnels are about 1.5 miles in length and from a trivia standpoint it is considered the lowest point of any of the US Interstate highway system highways. That being said it was late so traffic was just okay and there was little time for sightseeing lol read more

Talk about being behind the ball. We drive through the Fort McHenry Tunnel back the first week of October last year and just got the toll statement bill over a year later. I got charged twice for going through and then returning. I am not even sure the toll was worth it. Doubt they can use the pandemic as an excuse anymore. This is a standard underwater tunnel. Every time I have to go under it I hope it doesn't start leaking...yes don't worry I don't believe it has every happened but shoot we are underwater!! My niece in law was the driver, taking my spouse and me from Philadelphia to Washington D.C. where we spent a few days before heading back home to Maui. While we have tunnels in Hawaii, none of them go underground or underwater for that matter, just through mountains. Opened in 1985, Ft. McHenry Tunnel is 1.5 miles long and is part of I-95 which burrows under Baltimore Harbor and the Patapsco River. I was a little nervous riding through as I don't trust other drivers and their irresponsible habits but everyone seemed to slow down and stayed in their own lane of the two available. Lighting was adequate but headlights are required. There are a few easy curves and mostly straightaways. A toll of $4 was paid in a snap via EZ Pass in a huge queue of toll booths. Traffic heading north was heavier than south on this particular afternoon. OVERALL: Bypasses the city of Baltimore with a straight shot to DC. read more

The first 300 yards of each inbound portal simulates daylight with high intensity lighting and white pavement, eliminating the "dark hole" effect of older tunnels providing enough transition for motorists' eyes to adjust from daylight to the lighting level inside the tunnel. Arriving at the entrance sometime after midnight there was no need to transition but with the tunnel practically empty and all to myself it was a great opportunity to roll the windows down press on the gas and crank up some Metallica - Enter Sandman Hush little baby, don't say a word And never mind that noise you heard It's just the beasts under your bed In your closet, in your head Exit, light Enter, night Grain of sand Exit, light Enter, night Take my hand We're off to never-never land The roadway is 26 feet wide from curb to curb, and there is 16 feet of vertical clearance and the tunnel is filled with cameras that are monitored in a ultra modern control room above. I really should get an EZ-Pass, even though I rarely drive through tolls more than once every year or so. The difference it would have made on this trip, especially here at the Fort McHenry Tunnel in Baltimore, would have been worth it. That's because there was a decent queue to pay tolls for the folks like me with paper money. Especially so when the dummy in front of me dropped something. Ugh. Anyway, once through the toll plaza, the tunnel is great. Two nice lanes, a decent pace, and before you know it, you pop back out into the daylight. read more

Am I to assume a tunnel is more cost effective than a bridge? It very well must be as there must be some crossing dollar value formula, but tunnels tend to cost less. I guess keeping the innards clean requires little in the way of manual labor, but the tiles were shining and reflecting light back and forth, right to left. I like tunnels, I like the feel of an amusement park ride that I get from zipping on through (at a reasonable rate of speed of course) -- lights flash by, it's super quiet, there is a pole position video game -- stay in your lane feel as a regrip the wheel and throw that baby into overdrive. read more

I remember going through this lengthy underwater tunnel when I was a kid. My dad used to say "is that water leaking down the side of the tunnel?" lol Now 35 years later I find myself driving through the tunnel several times a week....and smiling. Of course there is no water leaking, and it is very safe. The tunnel is nice, well kept up and two lines of traffic that move in the same direction. This area has lots of tunnels and bridges....I love it. It does cost $4.00 for most tolls unless you have an EZ pass....and we are waiting for ours. read more

Tunnels generally scare the crap out of me, but this one's not terrible. The tunnel isn't too-too long, but it's not a quick sprint, either. I take it as I'm passing through Baltimore en-route elsewhere and stay in the EZ-Pass lanes to avoid long lines at the tolls. I believe it costs $4 to pass through. There are two lanes in the tunnel and you can't cross the line once you're inside. Also don't forget to put your headlights on. It amazes me when people do not. It's not that hard and it's beneficial for everyone else to be able to see other cars easily. The tunnel goes under water, which freaks me out, but it's free of debris and dry so that's cool. read more

So here goes: 1) Pay with EZ pass, free account online and MUCH faster than paying with cash: https://www.ezpassmd.com/en/home/index.shtml 2) When going SOUTH through the tunnel, if you need to take exit 55 (key highway) you MUST STAY IN THE RIGHT LANE IN THE TUNNEL. Yes, it takes forever as you tailgate the truck going 20 MPH but your exit is literally feet beyond the end of the tunnel. Otherwise you WILL MISS your exit! 3) There are police everywhere before and after the tunnel-rush hour, in between hours, everything. Don't be a dummy. read more

Can't we fix the long lines to the toll booths, especially for E-Z Pass users?! Why is it all bunched up in the left lane, which is supposed to be ONLY for E-Z Pass while the right lane was fine?!? This makes no sense. The good news is that you'll still have cell reception in the tunnel. My map app did just fine in here as I was checking out the traffic & I could even do check-ins while I was in it. read more

As far as tunnels go this one is A++ I suggest; Going around 10pm as the traffic is light Pay with EZ pass, because even at that time there are lines to pay the toll via other means Slow down on you way through and admire the cleanliness of the tunnel and finally.... exit the tunnel. :) read more

$4 for cash and EZ PASS. I highly suggest getting yourself EZ PASS to avoid long waits on the cash lines. The cash line waits can take up to 2 hours! The tunnel has smooth roads, which is a plus for me. read more

Traffic leading up to the toll booth of the tunnel going towards Baltimore can be annoying at times. But this tunnel is nice to drive through, especially since it brings me right to the Port of Baltimore whenever I need to board a cruise ship, like the Carnival Pride! Other times, I know that once I come out of the tunnel, I am closer to Washington D.C, and seeing my relatives in Maryland and Virginia. Happy Travels! read more

Forgive me for getting sentimental about a roadway, but I'm old enough to remember when this was built. As a matter of fact, I still refer to it as "The New Tunnel." Most of the memories are from riding to with my grandparents. We lived in Elkridge and they lived in Perry Hall, so we came this way quite frequently. My grandfather was always prepared with his dollar bill ready and out the window as we pulled up (yes, the toll was only a $1 back then). I still prefer the Harbor Tunnel when I'm traveling through the area because 895 feels quicker to the airport. I could just be fooling myself, but it gives me a chance to pretend like I'm a local expert. read more

One of 2 tunnels that take you into Baltimore from DC is you're traveling North on 95. It's never crowded, at least when I travel. The toll lines move quickly. E-ZPass is accepted in all of the lanes, I believe. You don't lose signal for too long, esp if you're driving fast. Switching lanes is illegal in the tunnel so be careful. The lighting is bright. Just keep moving... There's a lot at the end of the tunnel. read more

I am a Maryland EZ Pass customer for over 10 years. I have never been so blatantly stolen from in my life. EZ PASS ARE THIEVES!!!! I had a ez pass toll bill that was due in December. I waited 120 minutes on hold in order to speak with a representative, after attempting a in person visit in which i was told i could not walk in. The representative put my payment towards the wrong account costing me 600.00 in penalty fees. After hours of waiting on hold again for 2 other representatives on 2 seperate days to try and figure out why i had accrued penalties on a bill i already paid, i was told that the EZ pass employee that took my payment did not write a note in the system as to what account i asked him to pay, and therefore they would not refund the money that they stole from me, because there government EZ pass employee did not do his job! I am absolutely disgusted by the situation. They stole an entire weeks paycheck from my family because i did the right thing and paid my toll. I am a ER RN that was working while pregnant in the middle of a pandemic for our government officials to steal money right out of our hands.....disgusted! read more

Of the three tunnels/bridge systems in Baltimore, this one is surely the longest one. Be prepared for extremely long lines if choosing this route, as the toll booths here, are always bottled up in zillions of cars(unless you have E-Z Pass-in which case, there are no bottle-ups). When I was there a few years ago, you had to pay $4 both ways(2007), but that all could have changed now, and because I had an E-Z Pass from a different state(NY) at the time, I had no problem choosing a quick line at the toll booth. Thank you for enabling E-Z Pass here, MTAMD. Side note:each (south/north)bound area consists of 2 iron-clad tunnel systems. Upon exiting the toll booth you'll be faced with the two tunnels you must choose between. However, may I suggest just driving ahead into your closest one)(unless other issues don't permit this). Just remember not to change lanes inside this tunnel. read more
