    Patti Romp's Christmas Trees

They drive down from Vermont the day after Thanksgiving and they stay until Christmas. It really is a wonderful life. When I lived in the neighborhood, I would turn down the corner and see them, beacons in the late November sun. They signal, for me, the beginning of the holiday season: time for the eggnog, the warm woolen sweaters, the Jethro Tull Christmas Album, and a few fingers of scotch or cider at the fire. The happiness I feel when I see them at the beginning of each holiday season is unparalleled to almost anything I have ever felt during the season in all my life. It's akin to the warmth I felt as a young child walking into my grandparents' house half a continent away. My (now ex) boyfriend and I would get our trees from them every year. I remember the first year that we came to know these people. Tim, Patti's son, sat there as we told him what our living room was like. He got a feel for who we were and then selected our tree based on that. He then carried it all the way to the northern Heights for us and set it up. No expectation of any sort of compensation-- just out of the kindness of his heart. He showed us how to care for our tree, and asked us to take a photo of it for him once we had decorated it. Of course, we then always talked to him and his mom whenever we passed them on Montague, which was often. Tim's imaginative and always had funny stories to relay to us about his day. I hope he never loses that spark in his eye. The next year-- after a whole year of not seeing Tim and Patti --we returned, and Tim remembered the exact height and type of tree he had sold us. We of course continued buying from Tim and Patti. Brooklyn Heights has that old world appeal to it. You feel as if you're in a Dickens novel anyway. Yet when you pair the immaculate historic district with Tim and Patti and their trees as celestial white flakes begin to fall, you wonder how you could ever have a bad day again in your life. This year it's just me. I also live farther now-- in Queens. Tim will not be able to carry my tree for me this year. But on the day after Thanksgiving, I will certainly ask him to help me select a nice, smaller one, that I may transport myself.
