After my niece lost her Klee Kai last year, we started regularly visiting the Humane Society. We…read moredidn't adopt, but we enjoyed spending time with the animals and it was like therapy for my niece. Finally, a few months ago, we found Bonnie. My niece loved her. Her boyfriend and I picked Bonnie up as a surprise and she was thrilled. Unfortunately, it turned out Bonnie needed to be the only dog in a home. She's okay meeting other dogs but after spending too much time with them, she gets a little aggressive. Our family has many dogs of all sizes and we are a close family, so it was not going to work out. My niece did not want to send Bonnie back to living in a kennel, so she talked to a good friend of hers and introduced him to Bonnie. It was a perfect match--he has no other pets, and she adored him right away. They went to the Humane Society and transferred ownership. She kept visiting the dogs and finally a litter of Shih-Tzu c Basenji pups came in. She found herself a new partner in crime and is happier than I've seen her in a while. Her boyfriend's dog, Waffles (also from the Humane Society), has just about adopted the new baby, Lilo, as her own. She looks out for her, keeps the out family's other dogs away from her, has actually nudged her into a kennel and shut the door when they wouldn't stop bothering her, and even let her back out of her kennel in the middle of the night! The folks here at our Humane Society are so great, and they work so hard to make sure all of the dogs brought to them feel loved until they're adopted.

The owner of the dog trusted someone to take him in for veterinary care because she had no transportation, and that person surrendered him and told her he was being put to sleep. The owner reached out to try at least reclaiming his body to bury and was told she would need to pay $500 for the vet care. Since she was informed he was being put to sleep, she didn't think she could come up with the money. Then he appeared on their website for adoption. This dog was with his owner from 7 weeks old to almost 17 years when he was taken. He's never been with anyone else. He was her seizure alert dog. A friend went in to try adopting him. They said he was in foster and they'd call her the next day to set up a meet and greet. They never called, and he was adopted to a stranger.

At first, I experienced a bit of sensory overload with the noises and the variety of cool animals. Interestingly enough, I was soon taken back by how welcoming, warming, comforting, and even calming the pet store is. What was almost immediately evident to me was the amount of children coming in and going out of the pet store with such ease, excitement, and joy. I have seen children ride their bikes to the pet store, walk to the pet store after school, and heard (multiple times) my own high school students rave about the pet store. They are actually the ones who encouraged me to go to the store to purchase an aquarium and fish. Now, I feel drawn to visit the pet store at least once a week; it feels like a therapy session in the best way possible. Simply put - this place is a safe haven for everyone, but especially for the children of our community. Melissa's presence is comparable to that of a fairy god mother. It is so easy to see that she genuinely cares for her animals and her customers. I am so grateful to/for Melissa and all she does for the community by way of Fish Out of Water.

It's a small pet supply store with 2 self wash stations. (Grooming isn't offered) Although the store is small, it's very well supplied, the prices are reasonable and ALL the staff is very friendly. The self wash stations are usually available, the water pressure and template is perfect and, there's plenty of shampoo and conditioner options. The dryer is perfect! I have a yellow lab (Wilson) and even with his dual coat, it does the trick. If I had one request, it would be for a larger drying table, as my lab is just about too big for it. But, what they have works for me. I highly recommend visiting this location as you're about to head to the river for some treats and toys. (Flea & Tic protection) Or, if you're about to head home. It'll be a great spa day for your pooch.

The people here are so helpful and knowledgeable about how to help with your dogs' specific needs. My dog was struggling with major pancreatic flare ups and they were able to give me great recommendations on different foods and supplements off of the information we had from our vet that have completely solved his problems! They have a huge selection of cat and dog food, toys, care, etc. I would absolutely recommend checking it out!
