Felt the hype about this place on social media, so it was time to finally give it a shot. The lines I heard were crazy, so we made sure to come late lunch (1:30-2pm). Only had 2-3 people in front which was nice, but we waited like 20 minutes to get the food (I get it, tough with only 2 bodies in there to take orders/prep and it's made to order). Scallion pancake burrito, it was pretty tasty - let's just start with that. The pork was flavorful and they aren't shy about packing that baby in. The guac was good and balanced the burrito well. I don't care for pancakes, but this was solid and held the burrito together well - albeit a bit greasy. However this thing is definitely on the salty side. I wish I had some crema or sour cream to balance this baby out (California fat kid thoughts right here). Overall, solid bite. Not cheap at $14, but it's something you need to try! read more

I've been wanting to try this place for so long, and I finally got to try it this week. I ordered the OG burrito to go, and here are my thoughts: 1. It is incredibly salty. After finishing, I drank about half a gallon of water. 2. While the portion was perfect for me ( and honestly, because it was so salty I dont think I could've eaten more), others might find the size disappointingly small. 3. It was soo greasy. 4. The scallion pancake was kinda thick and doughy. Not like the scallion pancakes I'm used to with a slightly crispy layer. 5. It's a great concept, and the flavors could work. But they really need to cut down the salt. I will give them another go and update accordingly. read more

I was excited to try this after seeing it promoted on IG. I got the signature scallion pancake burrito with pernil and it was good but too salty for my taste. I did not think the burrito was balanced enough. There were a lot of strong, rich flavors and whilst the guacamole attempted to do that it just was not enough. The queso frito, which I love, is not very discernible when eaten with the pernil which overpowers and is the main flavor of the burrito. It is delicious but easily becomes overwhelming midway through. Some veggies or even pico de gallo would have made a big difference and improved the flavor profile. I was excited about the scallion pancake but it wasn't particularly special and I did not taste the scallions. I think with some editing this burrito could be great but for me it desperately needs more balance. Two sauces could be bought on the side the bodega sauce being the only one not added to the burrito but on principle I just could not pay $2 extra for a small container or just for side sauce in general that's wild lol especially given the relatively high price point for the burrito itself. I also believe the burrito should be able to stand on it's own which it is close but needs a little more to get it there. Currently, I don't really recommend going out of your way to get this and this market is pretty out of the way but if curious it's worth a try. Service is friendly there was only one person taking and preparing the orders, and she did a really great job getting my burrito to me within the quoted time (10 minutes). read more

I would have been nice to have some vegetables in it, maybe jalapeños, cilantro, or maybe pickled vegetables to help add a fresh crunch factor and balance out the richness. One of the best burritos I've ever had, including my 10 years of having burritos in LA, SF and SD. It's one of the most unique burritos I've ever had as well, but not trying too hard like Sushirrito. You can taste the origin story in each bite and the flavors from each culture compliment each other really well. I also tried the chicken one, and it was aight, but honestly don't bother. There's a reason why the OG has lore behind it. (According to the chef, the chicken version was made after they got popular, to appease non-pork eaters.) My only gripe is their business hours, as I was only able to try this since I happened to be on PTO. I lowkey tried to go again the day after but it was too much planning involved. I honestly check the traffic from Queens bi-weekly cuz I am seriously dying to have this again. (I'ma buy 2 next time lol.) I've noticed some articles online saying the hype for this place has died down but I think a lot of that is due to their current schedule. I can't help but think switching to nights and weekends would be a game changer. Hopefully that's in the future. read more

No worries in the scallion burrito running out. Was able to get one of these popular burrito babies after work hours. Everywhere this was advertised, these scallion burritos stated would be available until sold out. So happy to get one and had a spot at the bar area by the business vendor to munch on for dinner. My scallion burrito shell was so flaky, crispy, crunchy with the scallion flavor. The filling rolled up in the burrito was tender beef, kimchi, some avocado spread, melted cheese and a tint of that chili oil sauce. The person that made my burrito was so nice to offer me a side of lemongrass chili oil as a dipping sauce cup. The right touch to the burrito mix. This place is quite the trek to get to, all the way on the west end of Manhattan in the Chelsea area. But rest assured the scallion burritos here are still unknown to the public and you have a good chance to get your hands on these trendy rolls. My guess with the Chinatown location is unknown but it sure wouldn't be comfortable as getting these in this food hall. read more

I was really excited for this because of all the hype, and I was able to snag 3 burritos and a coconut thai iced tea to wash it down around 1:30 PM on a Tuesday. One burrito ($14) is definitely a lot of food, and I couldn't eat dinner that night because I was so full, so it's definitely a good price. It tastes exactly as good as you'd imagine, so I would recommend it, but I was personally a little disappointed because I've made a pretty similar dish (scallion pancake quesadilla + coconut adobo short rib + caramelized pickled onions + lao gan ma mayo + guacamole + pepper jack) and I realized that I can easily make this at home as well. I actually didn't notice the queso blanco initially when I was biting into it, but I saw it inside the burrito - I would probably use a bigger slab (or just do melty pepper jack instead). The lemongrass chili oil is great, but I will try making it at home before buying the jar. I'm not upset that I tried it though because I'm happy that this is so doable at home. I felt the same way about the coconut thai iced tea ($6) because I've never thought of that combination, but this is also very doable at home. For people who don't want to put in the labor, though, the burrito is a very good deal. read more

I have been craving a Chinese crepe for a long time, but nothing has been able to satisfy my appetite. Although I know this is not a Chinese crepe, it reminds me of one in a way that lights up my taste buds. I found out about this restaurant from instagram, and immediately knew I wanted to try it. I decided to give it out a shot today, and I'm so happy that I did. This place is located in a food hall, so it's a small stand with one gentleman working there. He was very polite, addressed me right away, and asked me what I want while he was still preparing the previous customer's order. He made my food as soon as he finished serving them and asked if I would like everything on it. I ordered the chicken scallion burrito with the bodega sauce. Every bite was packed with all of the ingredients which let me know they were evenly distributed throughout the burrito. The sauce tasted similar to Trinidadian peppa sauce which was perfect. Compliments to the chef and compliments to the founders of this restaurant for creating something that I hope is able to expand and flourish. read more

I heard of Forsynth Fire Escape from a friend who saw it on tiktok. The owners came up with the concept during the pandemic and originally started selling from their apartment, a super neat backstory! I was super excited to see this location in this new market in Chelsea. The interior was clean and modern and all of the vendors looked so good. The man who took our order was very friendly. We ordered 5 scallion pancake burritos ($14 each). We went around 2pm on a Friday- I'd say there were around 10 left by the time we arrived. They were all already wrapped in aluminum foil and kept warm on the stove. I had really high expectations going in but honestly was a bit underwhelmed. The scallion pancake wasn't very flaky as I like mine to be but instead was very doughy. The meat inside was flavorful but i am very glad there was guac to balance the strong flavors. I wish there was fresh cucumber or something light and crunchy for even more contrast in flavor and texture. I do want to try out the original location and am wondering if having it fresh would be much better. I'd say this place is worth checking out though and I'm eager to try and make my own! read more

If there's any spot that has been hyped a ton on IG for their beautiful story as well as burrito style, it's Forsythe! I have been waiting to try this spot for so long, but I wasn't going to preorder a burrito 1 month in advance! They finally opened up a spot at Olly Olly Market and I was looking forward to trying them out! Location is awesome! The food hall is huge and has plenty of space for friends to hang out. Ambience is a vibe and the decor was gorgeous! The service was spectacular and the people were so nice! Onto the food, they only have 1 item on the menu, forsythe burrito. I think the burrito was too small, too salty, and the scally pancake was too thick and not flakey enough. I don't consider myself a fast eater but i finished half the burrito in 4 bites... Additionally, I've made scally pancake burrito before myself and I've made it with steak, egg and cheese wrapped in a flakey, crispy scally pancake, which is heavenly. The idea of a scally pancake burrito isn't a new creation in Asian cuisine, search beef pancake roll, but forsythe's twist to incorporate pulled pork and the chili crisp was solid. Overall, their version was good just not mind blowing like everybody is hyping it up to be. I'm sorry, but it's not the best burrito in NYC. I will say that the lemongrass chili they have is pretty good but I can't justify at $16/jar. I was really lucky that a friend got to bring me here. The food was quick and was made in 10 minutes and we got the scallion pancake burrito/ got the extra spicy sauce. The sauce had a nice flavor to it but I wish it was more spicy. The burrito itself was amazing, as it is a Chinese Spanish fusion burrito with a scallion pancake like wrap. I truly enjoyed the burrito as it was super tasty and it was around $16 with the hot sauce. Portion wise it was an OK size too as it didn't fill me up but at the same time my hunger was satisfied. One of the really cool things I found about this place is the market that it's in. It was aesthetically pleasing and there was a lot of cool things to do there. For $14, this burrito was a paltry bundle of disappointment. The meat was flavorful, but not special in and of itself. It was difficult to get through towards the end because of how dry and salty it was. The filling also had a bit of cheese and maybe (?) guac but not enough to make a difference... The scallion pancake fell flat. There was no flakiness or layering. I could barely taste the scallions, and it was incredibly oily. Overall, just a poor representation of what a scallion pancake should be. Maybe it would have tasted better with the sauce, but since they wanted to charge extra for it, I expected the burrito to be able to stand on its own. It did not. What a beautiful pairing of flavors. Located in the Olly Olly market, this place nailed it with only one item on the menu, absolutely nails it. From there website, the solo food menu item is "Pernil, fried queso blanco, guacamole, and lemongrass chili crisp oil wrapped in a scallion pancake". The tender pernil, and fried quest blanco blend beautifully to make a harmonious bite. With the sweet heat and textural crunch from the lemongrass chili crisp oil, this may be one of the best food offerings in NYC. Treat yourself to the bodega sauce for an additonal kick. read more

I've stopped eating scallion pancakes in restaurants because it's usually a dense, rolled up and semi-uncooked piece of oil dough. It's not different here. Overall as a food item it's too salty and greasy, halfway through I was just powering through it to finish so I could go clean up all the oil dripping down my forearm. I first tried this place about a month ago and its quickly become my favorite spot. Ive loved everything ive tried here so far, the Chicken Scallion Pancake Burrito and pernil scallion pancake are both equally delicious. Their green sauce is addicting I dip everything in there (perfect for the tostones!) and always order extra. Ive also recently tried the empanadas - absolutely delicious especially the pernil. Their dough also tastes homemade and is one of the best ive had. And as if the food wasn't enough the staff are also fantastic, and super kind. read more

I wish I could give this a higher rating, but the burrito just lacked a basic understanding of flavor profiles. The burrito was a scallion pancake with pernil, guac, fried cheese, and chili oil. What does every single ingredient have in common? They're all fatty. On a micro level, every ingredient was good but together, it was too rich and fatty. It desperately needed an acidic hot sauce or pickled onions or some pico to break up how fatty it was. I came here for their very popular scallion pancake burrito. I kept on seeing reviews of the burrito online as being one of the best in nyc and wanted to try it. I went on a Tuesday and was there before a crowd could form. The burrito was made to order and I received my order within ten minutes. I ordered the seasoned fries on the side as well just to try. Overall, I felt that the burrito was okay however a little bit too salty for my taste. The components worked well together and it was really yummy however I did feel that it was lacking some type of spice/heat, it was generally quite cold by the time I got it even though I received it pretty quickly from the grill and it definitely was an overall salty item. They do have spicy sauces on the side which I asked for one container of but they said that they already incorporate it in the burrito however I imagine that they just didn't hear me when I asked for the sauce container. Regarding the fries, I would recommend buying fries elsewhere as their seasoning was way too salty. I imagine that they use MSG in their seasoning mix which is not an issue however the fries were overall way too salty to be enjoyable in my opinion. I don't feel I would recommend this place for burritos or fries based on the experience I had there. In my opinion, it was just okay. Not worth going out of your way for. There was only one employee taking orders and prepping. I was the only one on line but it took over five minutes of me standing there before he noticed I was there. He was prepping a few tickets (context: in olly olly, you can order from a table instead of standing on line). Luis and Isabel were sitting on the side. I did not want to interrupt them to say how excited I was to try their food. Luis is the one who asked if I was helped and told the employee to assist me. Luis also asked another customer who came a few minutes after me. He showed genuine hospitality. Isabel seemed indifferent. Afterwards the employee took my order and was very kind. To be honest, it just didn't live up to the hype online. My favorite was actually the cheese empanadas. I like the crunch on the outside coupled with the soft cheese on the inside. Also, tried the PEC which was fine with the sauce. To his credit, the employee offered me a complimentary sauce. This is another Instagram trendy place to try but not to write home about.
