This is a shop that can satisfy the needs of the hipster who needs to dress up his retro a little bit, along with young professionals who want some classic flair. Yes, you can wear a tweed jacket over raw-selvedge denim jeans and make it look good. The shop's got a good selection of both new and old, the buying for vintage clothes is done well, and prices are very reasonable. If you wanna class up your act a little bit without breaking the bank, guys - this is a good place to stop. It's a little bit rockabilly, a little bit Mad Men, and a little bit Animal Collective. Enjoy.

Hampden doesn't really have any other mens clothing stores (except thrift shops) so its a great addition to the neighborhood. Think of it like the sister...er..brother store to Double Dutch. Sixteen Tons also carries other man-gifts like wallets, cologne, belts, ties, hats, etc. The clothing can be quite pricey, depending on the item, but I did recently notice a sale bin! It's difficult for me to get my boyfriend to step into an actual store, or buy something vintage ("If its used, should it be cheaper?"), so its best that I come here alone and bring back what he doesn't want. I always end up asking a bunch of questions when I'm here- usually about sizing. When the owner is in the shop, he is warm and super friendly and helpful. There is another employee who always seems annoyed that I have the nerve to ask about an item; I really can't take that type of attitude. Customer service, man! I'm hesitant to dock Sixteen Tons a star because of this one guy's attitude. The owner has true vision and really caters to his clientele. He has helpful tips (more ties coming in next week!), good suggestions (how about a cool vintage belt for the guy who has everything?) and asks the right questions to really try to understand who you're buying for. He should pass these skills on to his employees!

And yes, the prices are very dear. The service is good, if a bit obtrusive. I prefer to browse through clothes on my own first, without someone following me around and making suggestions. Yeah, I was looking at that jacket, and that shirt and those cords would go nicely with it, but you're being distracting and I'm not looking to be "styled". That being said, I now have a pair of Italian merino flannel trousers that fit like a glove and are phenomenally comfortable and sharp-looking. I would consider Gian Marco an option for investment woolens in classic cuts.

The answer: here. The clothes here are top-shelf. There is a tailor on call. The employees are also really helpful. Also, I once spilled coffee on my tie, had a big meeting and this was the only place in Mt Vernon where I could run out and buy another one (60 bills!). So why three stars and a half? Because the size selection here is lacking (though this may be because it is a small shop). And because the prices are just so high. If I could afford to drop 1,200 on a blazer, maybe I could appreciate it more. Until then (read: never), I will continue looking in the window and thinking I'd rather go to Italy than buy a pair of shoes that'd pay my way there.

For ordinary humans, the purpose of trying clothes on in store like this is to get the fit right. After getting fit right, the staff put in an internet order (you don't walk out with what you tried). However, the store's stock is not really the same in terms of colors and size of pants as what is online, so the staff had to engage in a lot of guesswork and estimate to help me figure out the size of what to order. Ultimately that all failed. Even when it seemed very much like we got sizes correct (ie length, waist) in the Bonobos store, what was sent to my house had *no resemblance in size* to what fit into the store. I have no idea how that could be. Should you request another pant be sent out that's 2 inches shorter? Well, no. At this time (May 2023), Bonobos has a stock/supply problem, so when a pant is available in 30 inches, it's often not available in 32 or 28 in that same color. Too bad for the customer. The price tag of Bonobos pants is high. Add to that the price of a professional tailor to compensate for the problems of the store, and it's higher. Staff are cool, but right now the stores are set up to fail and it's not the staff's fault. But Bonobos has kind of set them up to fail, and that's what happened for me.
