I…read morelike that it's so handy that they pick up prescriptions right from my doctor so all I have to do is submit the prescription refill request and then show up here a few days later to pick it up. They cover all the basic pharmacy items and, although not overwhelmingly friendly, we're courteous enough. Because of the Royal Mile location and because I would think they are an independent pharmacy, their prices were quite a bit higher than the Boots around the corner. Their package of 16 paracetamol was £0.55 here, whereas Boots' were only £0.16. That said, it is convenient and handy if you need to stop in here, and it didn't seem unsafe at all to me despite what the other reviewer said.

On a recent visit when I nipped in for a pack of chewing gum, the various foul smelling, painfully thin and toothless characters waiting at the counter told me what that dark secret was. Despite the pleasant exterior, the lather large amount of skagheads that visit this pharmacy for their weekly methodone hit makes it a virtual no-go area at certain times of the day. I've worked on The Royal Mile for about six or seven weeks now, and have already seen two rather sizeable, drink and drug fuelled brawls outside. It really is quite astounding that the powers that be send the junkies here, to the city's main tourist thoroughfare, for their pick-me-up. Given that heroin addicts aren't known for their early morning "rise and shine" attitudes, as long as you get here before 1pm you'll be alright, and will find a quite lovely little outlet for all your pharmaceutical needs.

There are many positives to this surgery (e.g) - It is very clean, everyone is professional, it appears pleasant and easy on the eyes despite the atmosphere at any given time. The staff are responsive and 80% of the time they manage to contact you and solve what ever issue or effects that may conclude in a surgery. But!. Yes there is always a "but". There is a very definitive reason I have not given this surgery a 4 to 5 star rating. It's simply that many of the fine and hard working doctors of this surgery appear to be careless, cold, even a little snobby. That's not accusing let alone assuming all of the doctors of coming across this way. No. It's just a handful - more so the older doctors with a certain tone to their voice. There has been countless times I have phoned and been met with antagonising and pitiful tones or comments. Instead of leaving the call. feeling like I am moving forward securely and positively. Taking the necessary steps to recover, heal (etc). I leave the call feeling as if I have been verbally abused at times if not insulted in some shape or form. Or even worse - bullied in to a method of action I feel is not necessary, let alone relevant. This is not to say that these doctors do not have the qualifications or experience to handle many medical conditions. This is about appearance, the handling of patients as human beings, listening and taking care with fellow patients and most importantly, the tone and nature in which they perceive these patients. There has been many times that the doctors of this surgery have pulled through and helped just as they are trained to. But, again it's all in the tone and manor in dealing with patients. A doctor/patient relationship is not just about dealing with a patient then sending them on their way. It's about listening, taking on board what they have to say and making that patient feel like their health actually matters. I don't need doctors filled with ego and pride attempting to communicate with me as if I am some species further down on the food chain. I am a decent human being and just like anyone else, I deserve the time and patience from any doctor, despite their not so subtle judgements and beliefs.

I guess it's the same with a lot of GP surgeries, it depends on the people that work there. Sometimes I can be faced with a pleasant-ish receptionist and sometimes the person sat across the bench looks like they haven't broken out into a smile since 1996. I don't think I've ever seen the same person every time I've gone in there, even during my pregnancy when continuity of care is important. I guess with a busy surgery that can happen and to be honest I'm not that fussy but it would be nice to have someone who knew your history when you went in there... Anyway, if you're weighing up where to register I would recommend it on the whole. They now have a cool system of getting an appointment where you can call up at any point during the day, leave your details, have a doctor call you back within the hour and then they can decide whether it's an appointment you need or something else. A good system if you ask me rather than everyone racing out the blocks at the start of the day.

I have just had all my records transferred to another medical centre. Already I am happy with that decision. The fortnight wait for an appointment from as stated by the sullen receptionist was one step to far for me. Of course, I could get a phone call - as yet not even seen a doctor - and probably there was little chance of getting in to see one in the future. I am slightly phobic about going to see a doctor at all - and the all round miserable experience with this practice was certainly not helping. I looked at reviews on here and saw people recommending moving away - yes! I agree with that. My new practice already on the phone to me to discuss my application to be a patients - and was spoken to by a very bubbly and friendly person on the end of the phone. I dreaded picking up the phone at all at Bruntsfield. So I am gone - it feels brilliant! I would advice as well you think of doing the same - this place in recent years has gone down the tubes.

Napiers was established in Edinburgh in 1860 and this store on Bristo Place is where it all started. Victorian botanist Duncan Napier was the magician behind these health potions and up until the 1970's Napiers was passed from generation to generation as a family run business. After the death of the last family member in the line of Napiers to carry out this tradition the business closed down and it wasn't until the 1990's that it was revived - thank goodness for that! Many of the old recipes were found so the store is still true to the original. All medicine here is herbal medicine so it's reassuring that everything is natural. I used to take paracetamol whenever I had the slightest ache or pain but after living in Germany for a year I was a bit lost as you can't even buy paracetamol/cough syrup/ibuprofen anything medicinal without a prescription, but they do have an abundance of shops like Napiers and I found many of the natural products actually worked better and even when I went to the doctors I was given natural medicine as a prescription and a list of health foods to eat/foods to avoid. I guess it's a bit more informative than going to the doctors here and just getting crap that knocks you out. Due to the history and this being the original Napiers store, this branch has a great lived in atmosphere, they have little potted plants outside surrounding the doorway and inside it's bright and airy. The staff here are also very knowledgeable so whatever your ailment they will be able to recommend something for you. This branch is a dispensary but also doubles up as a clinic where you can get treatments such as massage, acupuncture etc.

I recently had to take my son in with an inexplicably (very) painful knee. The staff were unstintingly kind and turned what could have been quite a traumatic experience into something that bordered on fun ("I love having my bloods taken out"). We're not just talking toys in the waiting room - there was an 'art cart' loaded with fancy pens, stencils and bits to colour in and take home. Communication was superb, with both me and with Sam - he was never excluded or talked down to. He likes to know what's going on and I'm confident that the fact they involved him so much made the tests more bearable. Even beyond the treatment, staff members passing us in the waiting area often stopped to ask how we were doing and have a quick chat. The staff were extremely thorough, gave him loads of time and didn't diagnose him until they were confident they'd ruled out the more serious possibilities in several appointments over the course of a week. Obviously I hope we don't have too many return visits, but I'm confident that if we are ever back we'll get brilliant, personal care in a really sensitive, child-focused environment.

Without naming names, there is one doctor I have seen twice that is unfriendly and didn't seem interested in helping me at all. In contrast, I have since seen a different doctor who was very friendly, thorough and good at explaning things. I have also found the nurses great too. There is a self check-in screen, which is great, as it means you don't have to wait for reception staff to be free. You just click a few buttons and then take a seat in the waiting room. I have found the doctors tend to be running 10-20 minutes over time and the nurses more punctual. It is quite hard to get appointments outside 9-5 business hours. There is only one day a week that is open for extra early appointments, but these are usually booked well in advance. There is an NHS physiotherapy and podiatry service connected to the medical centre too. I have had physiotherapy here, which has been a good experience.
