It is very rare that I can't be bothered going into town but when those days happen (usually when the weather is miserable) I sometimes head to the Forge. It's not my favourite shopping centre in the world but it serves a purpose nonetheless.
The Forge has a decent sized car park and there are good bus links at either entrance, whether you want to head into town, Carntyne, Shettleston or down to Rutherglen. There is also a taxi rank at the Duke Street entrance which I've never seen empty - always seems to be a good flow of taxis. The Forge Market is nearby as well as the Forge Retail Park. There is also the new addition of a very odd ;Wraps & Kebabs' fast food van at the Duke Street entrance which I don't really understand..it's in a very odd position and as there are so many places to eat/take aways nearby, I can't image it being very busy. I certainly have seen anyone use it.
The Forge has a range of stores such as River Island, H & M, Yankee Candle, Holland & BarrettGame, Perfume Shop, Toys R Us, Poundland, Poundworld, Primark and a large Asda. There is also an arcade and cinema on the first floor. There is an array of other shops such as travel agents, an American Candy Store, Peacocks, card shops and a few others. There a few cafes scattered around, a Costa Coffee and a Subway. On the top level there is a cinema (which i swear I've never witnessed anyone actually use) and a large arcade area.
The Forge used to house some pretty decent shops (New Look, Superdrug, Dorothy Perkins) but as the Fort has developed and expanded over the years, the Forge has gone completely downhill. I remember when my sister was a few weeks old and she used to start crying the second her pram set foot in the store. I totally understand that now..I've witnessed pretty much everything at the Forge: from 2 girls brawling over a guy to another guy trying to walk through the store with his pet dogs. Nothing surprises me anymore..
Okay, so I haven't witnessed that kind of behaviour on every single visit but the Forge is somewhere I completely avoid unless I need to pop in. There are abandoned shop units (which they try and decorate up so you don't notice them, ut you do) and some of the units that have been filled appear to have been filled through sheer desperation instead of thinking about what the public might actually want to find in the Forge.
There are definitely better shopping centres to be found in Glasgow and if I was planning a shopping day, the Forge wouldn't be included in that because it's not the best shopping experience you'll ever have. But for convenience and the fact there are a few decent stores I can pick up necessities from, I think 3 stars is pretty fair.. read more
