I appreciate that the owner takes me through the repairs, shows me what was changed and why, and then he shows me the new parts installed. I think the prices are fair and I like the owner. I had been looking around for a good, reliable service place around the area and found this based on excellent google reviews. Came for regular servicing and found Jay to be very helpful and knowledgeable. He did the work very quickly and without any upsell, and he seemed to be a nice honest man. The price was also very reasonable. I used to go to Paragon Honda and they would always try to upsell this and that and I would always end up paying hundreds of dollars more than I expected. Jay does it for a fraction of the cost and time, without any of the high pressure sales tactics. Highly recommend if you're looking for a service station in the area. It's better to make a call and get an appointment, although Jay was nice enough to accommodate me as a first time walk-in. read more

There comes a time when your car starts talking, telling you stuff and it just takes only a fleeting glimpse of your account to see that the money flowing out is increasing at a higher rate than usual. It is at this point that one must give some consideration to what is next? Another mechanic bill or the search for new wheels? Admittedly, I drive an older car, its an ;01 and it had its quirks but a ton of soul and comfort that trumps not having navigation and other stuff, so I keep on chuggalugging along in Old Betsy, pups typically in tow. The dogs each have their own zones as she is a wagon, but she is talking now and I am monitoring her every word. Last week she was talking about loosing coolant and I knew it to be true, but not having a mechanic that I trust put the repair off a bit as living in the city requires less time from her than when I was in the south. One mechanic moved here, the other one there and all out of state with no notice and this left me in a tizzy. Yet I knew on this re return to NYC that Jay from Forest Hills Service Station was going to be my guy, I had used him, parents and friends alike did as well but they all look to me for mechanic recommendations as I was once a bit of a gear head. I would regularly disappoint them with a non answer, look to the sky, slight shake of the head and a shrug of the shoulders saying little more than "I just don't know." Again, since I have been back, 6 moths all told, I have been to Jay twice and advised the askers that Forest Hills Service Station is where I go and will go hence forth. Jay put in the upper coolant hose in, the one that I have struggled with as Betsys main trouble spot in my otherwise trouble free years spent with the silver bullet (Betsy is silver.) Jay opened the hood and dove right in, removing the faulty part when so much stuff was in the way and with the ease of a few socket strokes, wrench waves and shortly there after, it was out with the bad and in with the good. Oddly, Jay at Forest Hills Service Station is one of the few auto shops with hydraulic lifts so hoisting your car or truck up so work can be done from below, when, as we all know, most all problems occur is done with far more ease. Jay can and will get your vehicles fixed up in a jiffy, cranking your problems out, not labor hours in and this results in a per hour fee that is proper and fair and just anyone that says otherwise I dare say is just looking to cause undue static for this man. A man that is a pillar of longevity and stability in our neighborhood and has been doing so faithfully, honestly and with the utmost integrity for almost 40 years and if that does not say something, I do not now what will, and in the world of auto mechanics and the reputation some deservingly wear, I feel quite content now. read more

Living on the north side of Forest Hills there aren't many auto mechanics. Two years ago I tried one shop just off Roosevelt Ave to do my brakes on my 2012 Chevy Impala, good job but too much money in my opinion. I have seen Forest Hills Service Station on Metro for many, many years and decided to try them out last week for an oil change and tune up. Jay checked the car right away and looked under the hood very closely as he was not so busy at that time. My car was put on the lift in 15 minutes and I was finished in one hours time with a bill I could understand and was satisfied with the final price. Each time I bring it in, Jay provides a comprehensive assessment of the problem, clearly communicates the work needed, and provides extremely fair and reasonable fees, which always coincide with his estimates. He has gone above and beyond to ensure my car is well-maintained. In my experience, you can't get this kind of expertise and efficiency for a better price anywhere in Queens. Also, just as a side note, I've seen him carefully buff & wipe down each car as a last step of his service, even when no one else is looking, which to me demonstrates the integrity he has and the great care he takes with every vehicle he works on--even the oldest of Jeeps. BE WARY OF THIS SHOP. I had initially brought my car in for brake pad replacements due to noise coming from my wheel. Jay test drove my car and gave me additional diagnostics regarding the rotor and caliper needing to be replaced. Also, while he was showing me the issues, he had asked his mechanic if my brake pads were okay and the mechanic said " yeah, they're okay". Up to this point, I had acknowledged that rotor and caliper needed to be replaced but possibly not the brake pads. He told me an estimate which was $400-450 which would take 1.5 hours to be done. I thought it was weird it'd take that long just to replace a couple of items but I figured he probably had a queue. Before I left to wait, I overheard another customer saying his motor oil didn't need to be replaced, yet Jay mentioned he did it anyway which I thought was odd. When I returned, Jay showed me the total of the service which came out to be $740!!! He said my 'brake fluid reservoir' was contaminated and he had to do a whole flush and replace an ADDITIONAL caliper which I HAD NOT APPROVED OF NOR WAS I NOTIFIED OF. He also ACCUSED me or whoever worked on my car previously that a mistake was made and got motor oil into the brake fluid reservoir. WHAT KIND OF MECHANIC DOES THIS?! JAY HAD 1.5 HOURS TO NOTIFY ME of this but he didn't. He CHARGED ME AN EXTRA $300 to do services which I was not notified of nor had given approval of. I took to Reddit and asked for answers. MANY of the mechanics said I would have resulted in a way higher bill if Jay's diagnostics was correct. My previous shop experience was over a year ago so motor oil being in the brake fluid reservoir for that long should have resulted in EVEN MORE DAMAGE than what Jay had repaired. Jay did not do his due diligence and charged me wrongly. The brake fluid was most likely old and he mistook it for motor oil, then performed a flush and replaced another caliper, without my approval. Of course, this is all hindsight and if I had knew then what I knew now, I would have contested the bill. I had no idea I could refute the unapproved services since this was the 1st time I've ever brought a car to a shop for anything other than an inspection. This shop certainly tries it's luck with the newcomers so be careful. DO NOT TAKE YOUR EYES OFF YOUR CAR HERE OR LET HIM DO ADDITIONAL SERVICES. MAKE IT VERY CLEAR THAT YOU WON'T PAY FOR ADDITIONAL SERVICES WITHOUT APPROVAL. I will not be returning to this shop after this experience, first and last time customer. I hope this benefits others and make aware of the improper practices here. TLDR; expected to pay $450 max, got scammed $740 for additional services I was not told of nor approved of. Jay could have called me in the 1.5 hours I waited, to ask for approval but he did not request it. Jay performed unauthorized services and charged me for it. He exploited my inexperience with the situation and made monetary gain off it. As a mechanic, Jay knew he had to get approval if more services were to be done, as per the LAW. He did not do that. This was hands-down the best experience I have ever had with an an auto repair shop. We had an emergency with our rear shocks en route to NY. My son had to get back to New England on time, and I was expecting a long wait, an expensive repair, and probably having to find accommodations for an additional night in the city. Not knowing anyone, I was so lucky to find Forest Hills Service Station. Jay took my car right away, called me with a diagnosis and estimate in 40 minutes as promised, gave me a clear description of what was wrong, and offered me some different options for the extent of the work. He promised to have the repair done within 6 hours, and then called me in 3 1/2 hours to say it was done!! I went here last Tuesday to get breaks changed on my SUV. I met with Jay, the owner, he was great! He told me what needed to get done and how much it was going to cost and did my inspection. I believe that the prices were fair and the job was done fast! I was able to wait inside their waiting area in the meantime. I called a few days prior and asked if they were available and how long it was going to take. Jay was upfront with me and told me they were really busy, and Asked if i can come another day. I remembered that several years ago, a seemingly very earnest Asian man repaired my punctured tire with a reasonable time and price, so I took my car again when one of my tires started deflating every 5 days and all my tires looked totally worn out. Again, no fancy sales talk or flattering comments, but he had gotten me exactly what I needed and cared most, which is always the safety. He originally suggested some budget tires, but I went for Continental, which was also offered as one of the highest end selections, and I am so glad he brought it up! I am positive that this establishment is run by very honest and hard working people who care about what matters to you. I went to get a routine check up and the guy said that my car needed additional services. He pointed to different parts under the hood and tires that needed fixing, and he said that it would cost $480 in total, and that it would be a reasonable price because the services cost up to $1000 elsewhere. I am rather ignorant about cars so I asked a friend to come.. Turns out that the guy was totally ripping me off and trying to charge me for simple parts that cost about $100 altogether. I appreciate that he even takes the time to explain the repair, and show me the replaced parts, etc. This station has taught me how to replace my tail lights and head lights, should I choose to skip a visit to the mechanic. I want to take time to ammend a review I wrote about this service station that may have been too harsh and unfair. The earlier review was more reactionary and personal than I intended and I think I was more influenced by sleeplessness than a sense of fairness. There is no excuse for writing what I did... I was just wrong-headed. This more current review is my fair and honest assessment of the Forest Hills Service Station and it was resubmitted because it is the right thing to do. This is a very decent, organized and clean local service station and both my friends get their cars serviced at this garage. I needed new brake pads installed and everything worked out fine and the price for the repair was the fair price. I had to go back to the shop because I heard a noise from the brakes and wanted them to take a look at the car. The manager spent some time explaining to me that the noise came from the brake rotors (disk) and they might need servicing some time in the future. He took a couple of minutes to explain that there was absoutely no danger whatsoever and if the noise gets worse to bring the car back to replace the rotors at that time. I felt reassured by his explanation and I'll probably be bringing our cars here for service from now on. read more

My brakes were squeaking and then heard and felt the brakes grinding on the Rotors of my Dodge Ram. I heard positive things about Forest Hills Service Stations reputation in the neighborhood and decided to give them a try. The Labor rate was totally fair and two mechanics in the bays of the garage had my truck up on the lift and tires off. The Calipers were carefully disconnected and removed the old rotors and immediately installed the new ones. They had me out of there in less than an hour especially on the short notice time.. I just popped up and they took me in right away, the truck is running well and stops on a dime. They must have also bled the brakes because the pressure was very good when I hit the brakes with so little effort. I like places that can do same day service as I need my truck for work everyday.. so I will be back for any other maintenance issues. read more

I don't know where the few bad reviews come from, but they're absolutely wrong: the general manager Jay is supremely polite and helpful (and chatty!), and the work is quoted honestly and performed competently (and, at least in my case, quickly). I could easily have been conned into major transmission work on my last visit (clueless as I am on the subject), but Jay and his team immediately diagnosed and repaired a broken shifter cable and got me back on the road within a few hours, at a very reasonable price. read more

Jay the owner is Unscrupulous. He charged me ridiculous amounts of money and never ever fixed the problem with my car. He would tell me to drive 100 miles to reset my car only to find myself with a dead car 100 miles away. When I complained he told my husband it was because I am woman and I don't understand cars. This is not true, I just wanted it fixed and not become a tester for his mechanical ineptitude. He would say I am trying to save you money, but each time I brought it back he kept charging me and I had to go through the hell of never knowing if my car would start. Now my husband is going through a similar situation with Jay and I am furious. Jay charged him over $200 to fix the air conditioner. We were away and without air-conditioning on the hottest day and so my husband brought it back To Jay. Jay said it was the door on the air conditioner and charged him another 50 bucks! Then again we drove the car the net day and it still doesn't work and so my husband took it back to Jay. Jay said it's not broken and it is working for him. He charged him $35. My husband said it must be Intermittent because it didn't work yesterday. Jay said it works now without offering any possible explanation. He is the only game in town so I gave up my car until we move. read more

If you are looking for an HONEST mechanic who will not rip you off and will not make you wait all day, look no further than Forest Hills Service Station. My family and I have been going to Jay for over 25 years back when this used to be a Texaco station. For a while, I used a different mechanic for whom I had to get up at 7 am to drop the car off if I wanted it back the same day and I always felt as if I was being overcharged. Even worse were dealer mechanics when my car was still under warranty. I was so glad to come back to Jay. Two out of many examples of his honesty: 1) After getting an inspection, he stated that the brakes will need to be replaced but I would be ok to drive for another 3000 miles or so. Another shop would have changed the brakes early; 2) My car potentially needed a new transmission. It also needed a new water pump. Jay said that he would hold off on fixing the water pump despite the noise it was making until I decided if I want to get a new transmission. Anywhere else would've made me change the water pump. If your car needs to be fixed or just needs an inspection and you don't want to get ripped off or wait hours upon hours, come to Forest Hills Service Station. read more

Three stories. First, was when I was a clueless youth knowing nothing about flat tires. I came in ready to pay for an entirely new tire, but Jay just smiled and told it all he needed to do was fill in the air. Saving me from my ignorance cost hundreds, but there was no hesitation about doing the right thing. Another time I thought my engine was broken, but Jay just smiled and fixed my battery. When going to a mechanic, I really don't know enough to make sure I am getting a good deal, but I have so much well-earned faith in this place. I don't have to do research, because the man on the other side is as honest as they come. Last story was today, when I woke up to find a ticket on my car for missing the inspection expiration (fair, my fault). Jay had a busy day going, but he squeezed me in and skipped part of his own lunch to have me in and out. The prices are fair, and nothing Jay fixes ends up breaking again. During the pandemic I have't used my car very often. Hadn't driven it in about a month...battery was dead, when I tried to start it. I called my roadside service, and was given a jump start, which worked. The service person said I needed a new battery, according to his meter read. He then told me I could purchase the new battery for about $160.00 from his company, which he said is associated with AAA. The next day, I took the car to Jay's Forest Hills's Service Station. I called and asked if I could bring the car in for a battery. Jay, the owner, said I could bring it right in, which I did. Jay saw me right away, and said he would test the battery and the alternator to diagnose what exactly the problem was. He called me in about 2 hours, and told me that I did not need a new battery. My battery just needed an extended charging, which he did. I asked him to do a few other things including checking fluids, tire air pressure, etc, all of which were also completed in a very timely way. I was very happy I didn't need a new battery, and that my car was now ready for the road again. You'll feel confident that your vehicle's issues have been diagnosed and repaired competently for a very fair price. I highly recommend Jay's Forest Hills Service Station. read more
