We had so much fun at the berry foraging experience! The guide, V, and their boss, Angela, made us feel so welcome like we were hanging out with friends. V was super knowledgeable, very enthusiastic and showed us many spots for foraging huckleberries, native blackberries, and we discovered thimble berries too! It was great to have Angela there too as they were also super friendly and fun, and they took photos and videos for us so we could fully be in the experience. They gave us a delicious little treat that included jam made from foraged huckleberries at the site, mint, goat cheese, and a candied morel on a little crostini! I loved that we were also given information about other berries we could forage on our own and a starter info. guide. I will now be eating berries on hikes that have "drooplets" bc now I know they are all edible in the northwest!

If someone had told me a year ago that I'd spend 2 hours and 15 minutes on a cold November morning willingly learning about mushroom identification and foraging, I would have laughed... and yet here we are. This experience with Forage Seattle (booked through Airbnb Experiences) was the perfect blend of education and exploration, and our guide Vassilissa made what could have been a dry lecture into a genuinely engaging forest adventure. We arrived promptly at 9:30am on November 9th at Bridle Trails State Park (you'll need a Discover Pass to park, which costs $45 annually). The Google Maps pin was accurate, and the only minor hiccup was that the portable restroom was being serviced that morning - so plan accordingly. Our group of seven joined four other participants, making it an intimate 11-person experience that still felt personal and interactive. What struck me immediately was how knowledgeable Vassilissa was - until she casually mentioned (at the very end!) that she was relatively new to guiding, we would have NEVER known. She demonstrated her expertise through every identification, every answer to our random questions, and every teaching moment when we stumbled upon something unexpected. We spent the first hour at the picnic tables. The setup was beautiful - black tablecloths, mushroom identification guides, jars of foraged specimens, and all the tools we'd need spread before us. She walked us through essential safety tips (the most memorable being "when in doubt, throw it out"). We learned about the seasonality of mushrooms in the Pacific Northwest (you can forage 10 months out of the year!), how to identify a mushroom by examining the cap, stem, and gills/pores, and how to use the specialized foraging knife with its curved brush. She explained each tool: the perforated basket (to redistribute spores as you walk), the UV flashlight (which she demonstrated on fluorescent mushrooms - SO cool), the lighter (for the maple syrup smell on candy cap mushrooms), and the identification guide. One of my favourite revelations? The mushroom emoji is actually a poisonous mushroom (Amanita muscaria). Who knew?! After our classroom session, we crossed into Bridle Trails State Park's forested trails. Vassilissa explained what to look for when hunting edible mushrooms: ideal conditions, the importance of "duff" (that thick layer of decomposing organic matter on the forest floor), and how to identify both edible and inedible specimens. We got INCREDIBLY lucky with the weather - a dry, sunny fall day that was cold but not uncomfortably chilly. Fun fact: if the forest is more than 50 percent red cedar, you won't find edible mushrooms! We primarily hunted for chanterelles but also found Zellers bolete mushrooms along the trail. While our collective bounty wasn't massive (each person walked away with a handful), the process of learning to spot them was incredibly satisfying. Every time someone found a mushroom, Vassilissa would get visibly excited and turn it into a teaching moment - examining characteristics, explaining what made it identifiable, and sharing fascinating facts. One memorable moment was when Vassilissa offered us homemade reishi tea that she'd brewed from mushrooms she personally foraged. The earthy, slightly bitter taste was fascinating (and apparently packed with immune-boosting properties).Beyond the practical skills, I learned genuinely surprising things. Did you know that ANY dog can be trained to be a truffle dog (chihuahuas and Burmese mountain dogs were examples)? Vassilissa's approach meant we could ask random questions and she'd thoughtfully explain her perspective (she's a self-proclaimed plucker!). The experience felt less like an educational lecture and more like a fun field trip with an enthusiastic friend who happens to know EVERYTHING about fungi. That's the magic of good teaching - you don't even realize how much you're absorbing because you're genuinely engaged. After foraging, we headed back where Vassilissa shared information about group trips, foraging permit requirements, and the best PNW spots (Mount Rainier but NOT the North Cascades!). She demonstrated how to properly clean mushrooms. As a parting gift, we each received a goody bag of cultivated King Oyster mushrooms grown in Seattle. There was also an opportunity to purchase the Opinel foraging knife or the tabbed identification book. We were complete beginners, and Vassilissa met us exactly where we were with patience and enthusiasm. If you've ever been curious about mushroom foraging, or you're looking for a unique outdoor activity that combines education with gentle adventure, Forage Seattle delivers in every possible way. Just bring your curiosity (and maybe use the restroom before you arrive).

Great mushroom forage 101 for the beginner! Will definitely recommend to friends in the area!

Super awesome class, lots to learn and appreciate about nature and mushrooms. Angela is an amazing host and teacher; gets you to love and appreciate all that nature has to provide. It was our first time foraging and the whole experience was outstanding! Super fun to come alone or with friends, all ages and love/knowledge experience. The cooking class was super fun too, learned so many things about cooking mushrooms that I now realized I have not been doing. This is your sign to book the class and forage some fun! Definitely recommend!

Micaela W.

I booked the Seattle Mushroom 101 tour in late September. The booking process was clearly communicated and the location was fairly accessible (note that there was an option to pay for parking) I found the interactive portion of the class to be the most interesting and we were able to see a variety of mushrooms! Bring a notebook to take notes! I do communications and workshop facilitation in my day job and so I might make a few recommendations about improving the structure and flow of the sit-down learning portion, but overall it was a good starting point for future learnings.

I had an absolute BLAST doing the Chef-Led Intro to Gourmet Mushroom Foraging & Cooking class with Angela. Despite the rain, she was super prepared (even providing hand warmers, tea/coffee) and we stayed nice and dry during the cooking experience. She is super hilarious, entertaining, and really knows her stuff. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone!

Sarah B.

I learned so much about local mushrooms! We did not forage a lot, but learned the skills to go back again on our own. Thank you, Ben!

Chester D.

Such a fun and educational experience! The mushroom forage group was incredibly well organized, and the guide was both knowledgeable and passionate about fungi. I learned so much about identifying different species safely while enjoying a beautiful walk in nature. Highly recommend it to anyone curious about mushrooms or just looking for a unique outdoor activity!

Lili P.

Amazing experience! The guide Ben was super knowledgeable and friendly, and we found some beautiful mushrooms. Great way to spend a weekend morning -- highly recommend for anyone who loves nature and good company.

Maggie B.

Such an awesome experience! Absolutely obsessed! V and Angela were both so knowledgeable and fun to learn from! Can't recommend this enough! I will be taking more classes from them in the future!

Fun activity while on vacation in the PNW. Staff was friendly and helpful. Oysters were easy to get and we reached our limit quickly. Clams were a lot more difficult to find and we did not come close to our limit. They didn't want to be found. We took advantage of the boots they rent which were perfect for walking through the muck. Standing in one place and get you a bit stuck in the muck but it's easy to unstuck yourself. Recommend bringing your own cooler to take your finds home. All the directions provided to get to the location were extremely accurate and they were easy to find. read more

I almost don't want to give too much detail away! This was an incredibly fun experience full start to end. Clearly so much thought and care has gone into planning the experience. Angela was our host, incredibly friendly, funny and knowledgeable. Met at a location that was easy to drive to, easy to park at. Incredibly well thought out event, I came as a group of three and the total group was 12, mix of couples, families, friends (probably best without kids though IMO). This was so totally worthwhile and can't wait to do it again later in the year! I went on the mushroom hunting excursion in the winter (late January, very mild winter so far.) But I was a liiittle apprehensive because: 1. I'm moderately experienced with certain mushrooms and the event says it's curtailed for beginners, and 2. It LITERALLY snowed a week ago in town and had a blizzard in the mountains. (Not great conditions for a bountiful harvest.) But Angela the host made it a really memorable, informative experience with all kinds of thoughtful touches and some great varieties to ID in the woods, it was a very well-rounded trip. She's also wonderful to talk to and learn from, I'm looking forward to trying her other experiences throughout the year. read more

We recently had the pleasure of organizing an educational mushroom tour for our clients, and it was an absolutely fantastic experience! From the moment we arrived, our guide was incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable. They shared a wealth of information about the different types of mushrooms, their ecological roles. The tour was well-organized, and we got to see a variety of mushrooms in their natural habitat. One of the highlights was learning how to identify edible mushrooms and understanding the importance of sustainable foraging. Our guide made the information accessible and engaging, ensuring everyone in the group could follow along, regardless of their prior knowledge. The hands-on experience was invaluable. We even got to taste some freshly foraged mushrooms and mushroom tea, which was a delightful treat! Overall, this tour was not only educational but also a lot of fun. We left with a deeper appreciation for mushrooms and the ecosystems they support. I highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in nature, foraging, or simply looking for a unique and enriching experience. Thank you for an unforgettable day! read more

I recently did my first morel foraging trip with guidance from Angela -- what an incredible experience! I started at 3,600 ft using a GPS tip she provided, and had mapped out four different locations to cover a variety of elevations on the north side of the mountain. Within about 25 minutes, I spotted my first morel! After that, I found a few scattered here and there, with the largest patch containing four. There were signs of other foragers in the area, but that's part of the fun. I moved through the burn zone, driving between different spots, and consistently found morels. By mid-day, I had collected about 30. Later on, I tried a higher elevation around 4,400 ft. I started in an area with unburned grand firs (even spotted a wild rabbit along the way), and as soon as I hit the burn transition -- jackpot! I entered a stretch where morels were popping up every 5 feet. Over the next 30-40 minutes, I collected about 80, and left plenty of smaller ones behind for others to find. It's hard to describe how fun and rewarding this was -- a true adventure. I can't thank Angela enough for helping me get started. Highly recommend! read more

I had the most incredible experience with Angela and Ben on their mushroom foraging and cooking adventure. From start to finish, it was educational, engaging, and so much fun. Angela and Ben are not only deeply knowledgeable about foraging but also passionate about sharing their expertise in a way that feels approachable and inspiring. We explored beautiful surroundings while learning how to safely identify different types of mushrooms, and their enthusiasm made the whole process exciting and accessible. After foraging, they prepared an absolutely delicious meal featuring the mushrooms we found -- it was a true farm-to-table experience that I'll never forget. Their warmth, hospitality, and genuine love for what they do made the day even more special. I left not only with new knowledge but also with wonderful memories. I can't recommend this experience enough -- thank you, Angela and Ben! read more

I can't recommend this tour enough! I went with a friend to the Chef-Led Intro to Gourmet Mushroom Foraging and Cooking Class and we had the most incredible time. Angela is a wonderful chef and teacher. We loved it so much that we booked another tour a couple weeks from now! It is a very engaging experience from the delicious and thoughtful tastings, to learning about mushroom safety/identification, to going out and foraging for mushrooms. I was completely new to mushroom foraging and mushroom cooking before the tour, now I can't wait to go on my next tour but also getting out and foraging with friends! Also this would be a very fun activity for anyone that has the daylight savings blues and is looking for something to do ‍ read more

An absolutely wonderful time spent with Angela! Even before we met with her, her pre event text was friendly, detailed, and accessible. She is friendly, knowledgeable, and so fun! The hike we did was a good little work out which made it even more worth it. She taught me a genuinely new way to cook mushrooms and everything she made us was DELICIOUS!! This was a great intro even just to teach you how to be a little more attentive when you are in the woods. Also, she provides great suggestions of where to start your foraging journey. I bought two books on mushrooms but I'm happy I started with this course!! read more

I can't say enough good things about this mushroom event! Angela was absolutely fantastic, incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and passionate about sharing her expertise. She taught us how to identify a variety of mushrooms, explaining key features in a way that was easy to understand. Angela prepared delicious mushroom-themed snacks for us to enjoy, which made the experience even more memorable. You can tell she puts a lot of care into every detail. Whether you're brand new to foraging or looking to deepen your skills, I highly recommend attending one of Angela's events. Truly a wonderful day! read more

I had an incredible experience on the mushroom foraging tour led by Angela. Her knowledge and passion for mushrooms were truly inspiring. Angela made the entire experience both educational and fun. We had such an amazing experience on this mushroom tour! I had no prior experience foraging for mushrooms (although some others did) and came out of the tour so much more comfortable/knowledgeable at being able to find and identify wild mushrooms. The experience consisted of a short safety info session, a hike where we found mushrooms and other forageables, another class session on mushroom identification, and a cooking session where we all cooked up some fresh and delicious mushrooms. We even got to take some fresh blue oyster mushrooms home with us! read more

Angela made my bachelorette party very memorable! I loved that even though it wasn't the best time of year for finding a high yield of mushrooms ready to pick, her expansive knowledge and unique skillset made for a really fun experience. I thought it was an especially creative idea to add the cooking demonstration / participation at the end, and it certainly bumped the trip into the above-and-beyond category. I would recommend this trip to everyone - even people who don't like mushrooms might be persuaded in the end because of how special it is! read more

I went Oyster and Clam digging with my husband. We loved that the event was all inclusive, so we just needed to show up! Angela took care of licensing and having equipment. It was our first time doing this so it was very helpful to have a guide who knew what they were doing. The employees were very knowledgeable and seemed to love what they were doing! Our guide's first work day was the day we went but he was upfront and always asked Angela to find the right answers. Overall it was a 5/5 experience. Such a really fun and informative tour and we got to see so many cool fungi. Ben was extremely knowledgeable and engaging with the crowd. He knows his stuff and made it super accessible for everyone and knows how to get everyone excited about foraging. One of my favorite tours I've been on and even in the two hours we went on that was the most fun I've had in nature (and I've done berry foraging in the past)! Angela and her crew were eager to help us find different types of mushrooms, too. The hot mushroom soup for lunch was delicious. We loved every minute of it. They even taught us how to clean and cook the mushrooms we found. They also checked to made sure we hadn't picked up anything that wasn't edible. This is a great adventure. I used to scoff at food tours. Didn't really see the point of paying someone to show us around…read moretourist traps and tell us where and what to eat. Yeah, I was being a cynic. Then my wife signed us up for a food tour of Pike Place Market through Eat Seattle Tours. By the end of this experience, my whole perception of food tours had completely changed. Let's back up a bit. The evening before the tour, my wife and I strolled through Pike Place Market. We tried out food from a couple of famous spots, and called it a day. Quite honestly, I didn't get what all the fuss was about and didn't have high expectations for the tour. It turns out I was completely wrong about Pike Place Market too. It had more to offer than I could have ever imagined. And I have our tour guide, Chef Nels, from Eat Seattle Tours to thank for this. Nels, a former professional chef, led our group on an excursion through the marketplace, which turned out to be much larger than it looked. Besides the main area where the famous fish market is, it extends several levels below and stretches across the street, and includes a number of narrow alleyways. All told, it covers like 9 acres! Along the way, we learned some unique and interesting history behind Pike Place Market. For example, did you know that the most photographed spot in the entire marketplace, a Starbucks, is not the original location, contrary to popular belief? We also sampled lots of delicious food, of course. Highlights included: -A cheese biscuit that was buttery and crumbly (don't remember where Nels got it); -Clam chowder from one of the most famous clam chowder shops in the country, Pike Place Chowder-it was easily the best clam chowder I've ever had by a country mile, primarily due to the fresh clam meat; -Cheese curds and lentil soup (Nels offered us the famous mac and cheese or lentil soup-we went with lentil soup since we had their mac and cheese the day before) from Beecher's Handmade Cheese. The cheese curds were my favorite things I tasted during the entire tour. They tasted like fresh string cheese. I would have never thought to try this out at Beecher's. -Chocolate-covered cherries and nuts from Chukar cherries. Loved these so much that we went straight to the shop after the tour to buy some more for ourselves. Each thing we tasted was perfectly portioned. We tried over half a dozen things and I felt neither overly stuffed nor hungry when it was all over. Nels, who is officially licensed to provide tours at the marketplace, appeared to have a great partnership with all the businesses we tried food at. He would zip in and zip out of each establishment with a tray of samples. I do have to say there were a couple of items I tasted that were disappointing. First was the carnitas taco at Maiz. I wanted to like it since Nels talked it up so much. He described it as incredibly good and a tour favorite. However, I found both the tortilla and carnitas to be overly dry. It was borderline inedible. It could have seriously used some sauce, avocados, or something to add juiciness and flavor. That being said, I did like the little story Nels gave about the restaurant itself, how it was inspired by a two-year-old Maiz tortilla that the business owner found and tasted. The second item I did not care for were the arancini balls at Friends of Carmela. They were pretty bland-tasting and nothing to write home about. All in all, it was a wonderful and memorable experience. If I could give this review more than five stars, I would. Hats off to Nels for the fantastic job he did. I could tell he has a passion for his job and a genuine interest in sharing his knowledge of the food scene at Pike Place Market with locals and visitors alike. He truly opened my eyes to what food tours could offer, and has inspired me to seek out more food tours in other cities that I plan to visit in the near future.
