Stopped in for some fish and chips for lunch. The restaurant is situated along the York River and you can sit outside at the picnic tables and enjoy the view in good weather. Was looking forward to having a big piece of Halibut but was informed that the pieces were small and very expensive. As such I tried the Haddock but was quite disappointed in the portion size, mostly all batter. Also tried the clam strips which were dismal, pre made out of a bag and such a small portion. Fries were ok, nothing special and the coleslaw wasn't too my taste as well, very finely grated and such a small portion. So not a very good value, $17.00 for the Haddock and $12.00 for the clam strips. Probably the best option locally, but doesn't compare to many other fish and chip places around. read more

The fish and chips were great. Wonderful service. Very friendly and passionate about their product. they only had one order of clam chowder. We would have all liked to try because it was so good. They could use an umbrella for the patio, but great view of the pond. read more

Great East coast fish and chips sitting by the cliffs in Bancroft. It's a very simple place with folding chairs and plastic floral table cloths. What makes it a 5 is *not* the decor. I've been to Bancroft a handful of times before but this is the first time we decided to stop by the fish and chip restaurant and it the best choice! The fish was cooked perfectly. Loved the batter, it was flaky and easy to break apart. We ordered the halibut seafood platter and it was so delicious! Large portion perfect for two people. They just had whitefish in their store now, not the freshwater kind but the one from South Africa, next time we pass by Bancroft we are definitely going to come back and have our fish and chip fixings!! The building is super cute and even has a small door for the kids to walk through! Inside is beautiful decorated just like a cottage :) Staff are so nice and friendly and it was the owner (Diane)'s birthday today so we sang her happy birthday :) love the community up here! My husband and I were craving some tasty fish and chips and decided to stop for lunch before heading home. We saw fresh pickerel on the menu but instead chose the tender Halibut and local Ontario spuds with their homemade coleslaw and original tartar sauce. The generous and down-to-earth owner served us personally. She tended to my husband's halibut with such care, it was obvious she loved her job. While the food was great, their restaurant was a tad quaint, although this was definitely part of the charm. We picnicked behind the restaurant, admiring their beautiful view of York River. Best Clam Chowder in a 100 km radius. The clams were huge and the size of my thumb. We went here for lunch with friends and their kids. The kids enjoyed the kid special of halibites. Just driving back home from a very pleasant cottage weekend near Bark Lake. We made a short stop in Bancroft for lunch. Using Yelp we found this fish and chips place called "For the Halibut". This is a no frills restaurant... No fancy linens or decor... It's just what we wanted! The halibut was so fresh tasting (lots of fish inside the batter) and the fresh cut fries were delicious. The server and other employees were very friendly. I like that they explain right on their menu how they prepare the fish, how fresh it is and what they put in their batter. A great find! read more

We discovered this place thanks to Yelp! We arrived in Bancroft intending go to a different restaurant, but they were closed. So after a brief scan of what was actually open, everyone unanimously chose to try the Halibut. The Elf size door was an awesome welcome, the friendly staff were very helpful, and even pointed us in the direction of a great place to camp for the night. But, the food... the food was the best part! We all ordered the halibut and chips, and it was the best I've ever had. So good, that we actually packed up camp early the next day and came back again for lunch! We now consider it a must visit when passing through Bancroft. read more

Great place to eat right off the highway. Awesome staff. If you've ever wondered where your food comes from, just talk to the waitress or the kitchen staff - they were more than willing to tell me exactly where my particular piece of halibut came from. Delicious fish. These guys know what they are doing, right down to the vinegar in a spray bottle. With an unassuming building, unassuming and clean dining room, these people let their food do the talking for them. Also right on the highway, so no lengthy detour. read more
